Cleveland: University Circle (General): Development and News
I was talking to some Case School of Engineering leaders, and we began talking about all the current initiatives for their expansion (Wind Turbine, Sears laboratory expansion, etc) and another project came up. A $10 million renovation is about to begin for their "ThinkBox" project, renovation of this 6-story building, with some cool rooftop views: http://intecsky.files.wordpress.com/2010/11/think-box-2-pg-l-083010-1.pdf It'll combine engineering and entrepreneurship. They'll be asking for the remainder of the money during alumni weekend this month.

Cleveland: Case Western Reserve University News & Info
GREAT article in Freshwater about Case Western's rise in the national rankings: washington monthly awards case western with number seven spot in national rankings Thursday, September 01, 2011 What if colleges weren't ranked by what they can do for you, as those published by U.S. News & World Report are designed to show? What if a national college survey looked rather at what colleges are doing for the country? That's precisely the tack taken by Washington Monthly, which just released its 2011 national universities rankings. "We all benefit when colleges produce groundbreaking research that drives economic growth, when they offer students from low-income families the path to a better life, and when they shape the character of future leaders," write the mag's editors. "And we all pay for it, through hundreds of billions of dollars in public subsidies. Everyone has a stake in how that money is spent." This survey ranks schools based on their contribution to the public good in three broad categories: Social Mobility (recruiting and graduating low-income students), Research (producing cutting-edge scholarship and PhDs), and Service (encouraging students to give something back to their country). Earning the #7 spot in the National Universities category -- and a special note in the introduction -- is Case Western Reserve. http://www.freshwatercleveland.com/inthenews/washmonthlycwru090111.aspx

More good news out of Case Western: Researcher develops nanotube-reinforced PU turbine blades PLASTICS NEWS REPORT Posted August 30, 2011 CLEVELAND (Aug. 30, 2:20 p.m. ET) -- A post-doctoral researcher at Case Western Reserve University has spearheaded an effort to build the world’s first polyurethane wind turbine blade reinforced with carbon nanotubes. Marcio Loos, at Cleveland-based CWRU’s department of macromolecular science and engineering, worked with colleagues at the university and from Bayer MaterialScience LLC in Pittsburgh and Molded Fiber Glass Co. in Ashtabula, Ohio, on the project. “The idea behind all this is the need to develop stronger and lighter materials which will enable manufacturing of blades for larger rotors,” Loos said in a news release. Lighter blades help to maximize energy output from wind turbines. In a comparison of reinforcing materials, the researchers found carbon nanotubes are lighter per unit of volume than carbon fiber and aluminum and had more than 5 times the tensile strength of carbon fiber and more than 60 times that of aluminum. http://www.plasticsnews.com/headlines2.html?id=22970&channel=320

Cleveland: Wind Turbine Construction News
from a PD Guest Columnist ;) Build Cleveland's wind farm Published: Tuesday, August 30, 2011, 3:39 AM Updated: Tuesday, August 30, 2011, 8:28 AM By Plain Dealer guest columnist Greater Cleveland has the potential to become the national leader in the growing renewable energy economy because of local efforts to develop the first freshwater wind farm in the country. Lake Erie Energy Development Corp. (LEEDCo) is working to develop this project, which would create a projected 600 initial jobs and the potential for 8,000 long-term wind-energy jobs, according to NorTech. This would support Ohio's existing wind-energy supply chain (pdf), which already boasts more than 100 companies, and it would offer opportunities for new businesses to begin. The city of Cleveland fully supports the creation of this offshore wind farm. We have signed a memorandum of understanding to help move the project forward, and Cleveland Public Power is geared up to purchase 20 percent of the energy created by the wind farm. The city supports this project on its own merits and because of what it represents -- a vision of our regional economy as a national leader in renewable energy and a major economic growth sector. For this vision to become a reality, our entire community needs to rally behind LEEDCo and the offshore wind farm. If we don't take advantage of this opportunity, someone else will. Some other city will build the first offshore wind farm. Some other region will create thousands of new green-collar jobs. Some other state will reap the benefits of a strong wind-energy supply chain. http://www.cleveland.com/opinion/index.ssf/2011/08/build_clevelands_wind_farm_fra.html

Cleveland State's pipeline to medical school starts this Fall. Cleveland medical influences continues: Northeast Ohio Medical University, Cleveland State University collaborate to train medical students Published: Tuesday, August 30, 2011, 6:00 PM Updated: Tuesday, August 30, 2011, 11:39 PM By Angela Townsend, The Plain Dealer In August 2010, on the day he was installed as president of the Northeast Ohio Medical University, Dr. Jay A. Gershen pledged his commitment and his own money toward the creation of a new "education for service" program. "Our goal is to develop the pipeline and train students who are more likely to go back to those communities," said NEOMED Dean Jeffrey Sussman. Ultimately, he said, the hope is that the medical school can provide a supply of primary-care physicians and pharmacists who want to return to their home communities, underserved places where the shortage of those professionals is acutely felt. Three students from CSU started classes at NEOMED on Monday. They join other first-year students who have been chosen from out of more than 2,000 people who apply each year -- most from Youngstown State University, Kent State University and the University of Akron. The total first-year medical school class will be 126 students. On June 30, Gov. John Kasich signed legislation approving funding for NEOMED to add 35 students to its medical school class. The legislation also established the NEOMED Academic Campus at CSU. http://www.cleveland.com/healthfit/index.ssf/2011/08/northeast_ohio_medical_univers.html

Case Western rising in more random rankings: Washington Monthly ranks Case Western Reserve seventh in the nation Posted: August 29th, 2011 | Author: thedaily | Filed under: news | No Comments » Case Western Reserve University now stands among the top 10 universities in the country, according to Washington Monthly magazine, which ranked the university No. 7. This is a 10-spot jump from last year, and marks the highest position the university has earned on the magazine’s list. The rankings are based on three equally weighted criteria: social mobility (enrolling low-income students and helping them earn degrees); research production and success at sending undergraduates onto doctoral programs; and commitment to community service. http://cwru-daily.com/news/?p=1891
