Cleveland: Demolition Watch
From the Uptown thread: I don't know the exact address but its on the same side of the street as the Cleveland Free Clinic. There's the Free Clinic, a dingy old strip mall, and then this gigantic warehouse looking building that I'm talking about, right before you get into East Cleveland. Here's the address to the Free Clinic for using Google Maps. Hope this helps. 12201 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio 44106 Decided on my walk back from work to walk over there and check it out. As you may have already guessed due to the thread I am posting in, it is to be demolished. Either Case Western or one of the Hospitals owns it. The demo workers told me it was Hospital owned, but I find it very hard to believe. Here are some pictures I took about 15 min ago:

Allen Theatre renovation nears completion at Cleveland's PlayhouseSquare Published: Thursday, August 11, 2011, 1:18 PM Updated: Thursday, August 11, 2011, 2:14 PM Joanna Connors, The Plain Dealer By Joanna Connors, The Plain Dealer The plush new seats are in. The ingeniously designed acoustic panels have been installed. The lights are being set on the new catwalks crossing high above the house. With opening night just a month away, the Allen Theatre is almost ready for its close-up as the flagship performance venue for the Cleveland Play House and the dance and drama departments of Cleveland State University. The dust from months of construction work remains, as does an army of workers finishing up the yearlong renovation. The project, a three-way collaboration by PlayhouseSquare, the Play House and CSU, was designed by the Cleveland-based architecture firm Westlake Reed Leskosky to create a new, contemporary theater within the old Allen, while preserving its historic shell and dazzling vintage finishes. http://www.cleveland.com/arts/index.ssf/2011/08/clevelands_allen_theatre_renov.html- Cleveland: Wind Turbine Construction News
Cleveland has some wind power history: Charles Brush used wind power in house 120 years ago: Cleveland innovations Published: Thursday, August 11, 2011, 8:03 AM Updated: Thursday, August 11, 2011, 8:19 AM Peter Krouse, The Plain Dealer By Peter Krouse, The Plain Dealer All the excitement about wind turbines spinning in Lake Erie or dotting Ohio's farmland probably would have been embraced by Cleveland inventor Charles Brush. After all, he had the idea first, more than 100 years ago. Brush's windmill dynamo was featured in the Dec. 20, 1890, edition of Scientific American, where it was hailed as the only "successful system of electric lighting operated by means of wind power" known at the time. Brush, whose contribution to the advancement of electric power includes work on development of the arc light and the dynamo, built the wind-powered generator in the backyard of his mansion at East 37th Street and Euclid Avenue. The contraption was an engineering feat. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2011/08/charles_brush_used_wind_power.html- The Official *I Love Cleveland* Thread

Whole Country Talking About Cleveland's Urban Farming Efforts and Vacant Lots Posted by Vince Grzegorek on Wed, Aug 10, 2011 at 2:11 PM Urban farming efforts in Cleveland are not exactly breaking news in town anymore. You know about it, you've read about it, you've driven by the farm off W. 25th, you've eaten vegetables grown right here in Cleveland and served up in dishes from Jonathan Sawyer and Michael Symon and others. But those outside of Cleveland are beginning to take notice and spread the word of the Forest City's penchant for local food, focus on sustainability, and a host of other buzzwords and trends that don't sound very sexy but boil down to: eating fresh, keeping money and work in the city, and making use of vacant land in productive ways. http://www.clevescene.com/scene-and-heard/archives/2011/08/10/whole-country-talking-about-clevelands-urban-farming-efforts-and-vacant-lots- Cleveland: University Hospitals Expansion (University Circle)

More growth in the Health- Tech Corridor :-D: arteriocyte to expand cle production facility, add 15 to 20 jobs Thursday, August 04, 2011 Arteriocyte, a leading clinical-stage biotechnology company with offices in Cleveland and Hopkinton, Mass., has been awarded a $1 million grant by the Ohio Department of Development's Third Frontier Commission. The company, which develops proprietary stem cell and tissue engineering based therapies, will use the grant for the development and commercialization of hematopoietic stem cell expansion for clinical applications. The move is part of the Ohio Third Frontier Biomedical Program to accelerate the company's Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) of its NANEX technology for clinical use under the product name HemaEx. The company, which was founded in 2004 as a spin-off out of CWRU, has seen rapid growth in the past couple of years, going from four employees to 80. The expansion will create between 15 and 20 jobs in the production facility. http://www.freshwatercleveland.com/innovationnews/arteriocyte080411.aspx- Cleveland: Detroit-Shoreway / Gordon Square Arts District: Development News
I've heard W.65th and Lorain is also getting some more art as well: ecovillage-area recreation center to capture, reuse rainwater onsite Thursday, July 14, 2011 When Zone Recreation Center's 22 acres of green space reopen next year following a $2.5 million "green" facelift, the rainwater that falls there will be reused on site, rather than being funneled into sewers to pollute our lake, rivers and streams. "We're using it to rehydrate the park," explains Ward 15 Councilman Matt Zone, who allocated funding for the park's revitalization. The redesigned park's water conservation features will include permeable pavers that allow rainwater to filter into the ground (unlike most parking lots or hard surfaces, which send water cascading into the nearest sewer). "Bioswales" will also capture water and direct it into rain gardens, which will be seeded with native plants that don't require a lot of mowing, chemicals or maintenance. http://www.freshwatercleveland.com/devnews/zonerecreationcentergoesgreen071411.aspx- Cleveland: Cleveland State University: Development and News
civic commons moves to street-level storefront at trinity commons Thursday, August 04, 2011 The Civic Commons, a nonprofit organization that helps foster civic engagement through creating community conversations, has relocated its offices to a street-level storefront at Trinity Commons. "We wanted to be accessible to the community, and a place where people can just drop by," says Dan Moulthrop, Civic Commons Curator of Conversation, of the move. "We don't want to be hidden in an office building somewhere; we want people to feel like the Civic Commons is a place they recognize and own." Trinity Commons, which is located at E. 22nd and Euclid, was developed by Trinity Episcopal Cathedral a decade ago to house its offices, provide community meeting space and create new storefronts. Moulthrop says he is looking forward to using Trinity Commons' meeting space to host face-to-face conversations about important civic issues, supplementing the group's online presence. Moulthrop is also enjoying his central location in the Campus District near downtown Cleveland. "We're close to a lot of things, and very accessible because we're right on Euclid Avenue, a major artery into downtown," he says. http://www.freshwatercleveland.com/devnews/civiccommonsstorefront080411.aspx- Cleveland: Lakefront Development and News
Interesting news! leandog software to buy, renovate former hornblower's barge Thursday, August 04, 2011 When John Stahl launched LeanDog, his now four-year-old software development company that has grown to 34 employees, he was looking for a space that would stretch his clients' minds and embody the expansive thinking LeanDog tries to instill. He found what he was looking for in a former Lake Erie barge, which dates back to 1892 and was last used as the floating restaurant Hornblower's. "We help companies envision who they want to be," says Stahl. "With a view of the trains, the Rock Hall, Lake Erie and downtown Cleveland, we figured this was the place to do that." Now Stahl has partnered with the owner of Arras, a 20-year-old marketing and brand innovation company that currently has offices in the Terminal Tower, to purchase and renovate the barge, now permanently moored at 1151 N. Marginal Road. The project will add a full second story to accommodate the companies' growth. http://www.freshwatercleveland.com/devnews/leandogrenovateshornblowers080411.aspx- Cleveland: Downtown: East 4th Street Developments
 new downtown bike station to offer parking, lockers, showers for bike commuters Thursday, August 04, 2011 Although it has faced more delays than a cyclist in a lake-effect snowstorm, the new downtown bike station finally is set to open by mid-August. And when it does, it will be the first of its kind in Ohio. The new facility, called The Bike Rack, will offer 50 secure, indoor bike parking spaces and 10 outdoor spaces. It will also feature lockers for downtown commuters who would like to store fresh duds for the day without folding them. Finally, the facility will have three shower areas with private changing rooms. John Sirignano, The Bike Rack's operations manager, says he hopes the new facility will not only serve existing bike commuters, but also spur additional riders to take the plunge. "If you're a commuter, then we want to get you thinking about biking to work," he says. "We're planning educational programs about what it takes to commute, and we'll offer free days so people can try it." http://www.freshwatercleveland.com/devnews/thebikerackopening080411.aspx- Cleveland: General Business & Economic News

'Urban prairie' design at 27 Coltman townhouses cuts landscape cares Published: Wednesday, August 03, 2011, 7:17 PM Roxanne Washington, The Plain Dealer By Roxanne Washington, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Low-maintenance gardens that can be healthy and pretty, minus the chemicals and heavy watering, are becoming increasingly popular among homeowners. They make a lot of sense for condominium settings, too. That's what Andrew Brickman was thinking when seeking a landscape designer to dress up the property around 27 Coltman Luxury TownHomes. The dwellings are off Euclid Avenue and East 119th Street, near University Circle and abutting Little Italy. http://www.cleveland.com/insideout/index.ssf/2011/08/urban_prairie_design_cuts_land.html- Cleveland: Can MGK help change the perception for young people?
