Cleveland: University Circle (General): Development and News
Western Reserve Historical Society marks turnaround with updates Published: Monday, August 01, 2011, 11:59 AM Updated: Monday, August 01, 2011, 3:02 PM Margaret Bernstein, The Plain Dealer By Margaret Bernstein, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum's cars and planes will vanish next month. But this time, it won't be because of financial woes. In fact, it's just the opposite. The Western Reserve Historical Society, which operates the Crawford museum, will place the vehicles in temporary storage so that it can embark on 10 months of renovations and improvements, financed mainly by a long-delayed $2.8 million grant from the state. Historical society officials this week will announce a sweeping plan to update its University Circle facility and make it handicap accessible. New roofing, ceilings, insulation, electrical and sprinkler systems will be installed in the two lobbies and the Crawford museum, and the gift shop will be expanded. The Crawford museum will undergo a face-lift and two new grand staircases will create a more dramatic introduction to the collections downstairs. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2011/08/western_reserve_historical_soc_5.html#incart_hbx

Cleveland to Canada Ferry
I really like the new president. Cleveland: Port 'testing waters' for new plan 6:36 PM, Jul 27, 2011 | comments Written by Tom Beres CLEVELAND -- The Port of Cleveland has launched discussion of a big new plan that would expand its operation and take on new roles. The plan nixes a previous president's plan that would have involved moving the entire port operation to East 55th Street. "That was unrealistic. It was too much money," said Port Authority President Will Friedman. Friedman wants to make a tourist ferry to Ontario a top priority. He believes adoption of the plan as a certainty would enhance the chances of additional Lakefront development. "This is the time to get started. We think it's a reasonable approach, setting aside relocating, looking at the assets we have , taking on new challenges and making lemonade out of those lemons is a better approach," Friedman said. http://www.wkyc.com/news/article/199477/3/Cleveland-Port-testing-waters-for-new-plan

The Official *I Love Cleveland* Thread
This article is as "I Love Cleveland" as you can get! these 'boomerangs' prove there's nothing wrong with taking the long way back home With months-long waiting lists for many downtown apartments, it's clear that Cleveland is attracting plenty of new residents. But some aren't "new" at all. Boomerangs, native Clevelanders who've flown the coop only to return, claim a host of reasons for their homecoming. They miss family and friends, sure, but also a hometown that's high-access, low-stress and easy on the wallet. The Cleveland many find when they return brims with big hearts and small egos. Vibrant emerging neighborhoods, a booming restaurant scene, and an awakening economy mean that boomerangs often find a hometown that's vastly improved from the one they left behind. http://www.freshwatercleveland.com/features/welcomebackboomerangs072811.aspx?utm_source=VerticalResponse&utm_medium=Email&utm_term=&utm_content={Email_Address}&utm_campaign=Of+Bikes+and+Boomerangs

Cleveland: North Collinwood / Waterloo Arts District: Development and News
More from the PD: Waterloo Road to court artists with money to buy, fix homes Published: Sunday, July 24, 2011, 10:05 PM Thomas Ott, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Waterloo Road area long ago rolled out the welcome mat for artists. Now it's also dangling cash. A new $500,000 program will provide small loans to help artists buy and renovate homes in the growing East Side arts and entertainment district. Artists also can receive grants for neighborhood projects. The Community Partnership for Arts and Culture, a Cleveland advocacy group, received half of the $500,000 from New York-based Leveraging Investments in Creativity. The national, foundation-backed initiative seeks to build support for artists and strengthen their contributions to society. The partnership, which will raise the balance of the $500,000, then picked Waterloo in a citywide competition among nonprofit neighborhood development groups. Data showed other areas had higher concentrations of artists, artists by neighborhood, but judges saw a chance for Waterloo's proposed Artists in Residence program to "play a transformative role," said Seth Beattie, the partnership's strategic initiative director. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2011/07/waterloo_artists_can_get_money.html

Case Western Reserve University Spartans Athletics Discussion
Looks like CWRU also has a surprise transfer: QB Erik Olson http://athletics.case.edu/sports/fball/2011-12/bios/olson%20erik%20n53b Transferring in from Division II California University of Pennsylvania, and also posted a perfect 15-0 record in high school and a PA state runner-up. They've lost two extremely talented QB's...so will see if this guy can fit into the pass happy offense.

Case Western Reserve University Spartans Athletics Discussion
It's that time again...Case Western Reserve football! 8-) 2011 Spartan Football Season Preview CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The 2011 edition of the Case Western Reserve University football team will feature one of the top defensive units in program history and plenty of fresh faces on offense as the Spartans look to capture a fourth University Athletic Association title in five seasons. The Spartans, 8-2 overall and 1-2 in UAA action last season, have won three of the last four conference championships with three straight trips to the NCAA Playoffs from 2007-09. CWRU's run includes a 38-game regular season winning streak that began at the end of the 2006 campaign and stretched all the way to the latter portion of the 2010 schedule. Of the 31 lettermen back from last year's group, Case returns a total of 13 starters – eight on defense, four on offense and one on special teams. With most of his team's experience on the defensive side of the ball, eighth-year head coach Greg Debeljak knows his team may have to rely more heavily on defense than it has during the program's dominant run of the past four seasons. But, Debeljak also knows that a different identity will not change his team's goals heading into the fall of 2011. "We have two consistent goals that we try to obtain each and every year," said Debeljak, who is 55-22 in seven seasons as head coach. "Our number one goal is to win the UAA – that is the priority. Our second goal is team unity and creating a family atmosphere within our program. This year, the third goal is to improve week-by-week. We will have some question marks going in, especially on offense, so we're going to have to consistently improve to reach our goal of winning the UAA. http://athletics.case.edu/sports/fball/2011-12/releases/20110714nvoonq BTW...check this new Case Western sports website...looks like they're partnered with a company known as PrestoSports.

Cleveland: Ohio City: Development and News
new ohio city storefront johnnyville slugger to fabricate custom baseball bats Thursday, July 21, 2011 When asked why he decided to open his custom-engraved baseball bat store, Johnnyville Slugger, on W. 25th Street in Ohio City, owner Johnny Smatana naturally employed a sports metaphor. "If you go to the Yankees and bat .280, they'll hate you," he says. "If you go to a little place where you can do some good, they'll still like you." Smatana, whose career includes a stint playing football for the Miami Hurricanes and 27 years moving freight for Estes Forwarding Worldwide, says he spent a month looking at different locations, but felt most at home here. "There's so much happening here; Ohio City is the most up-and-coming part of the city," he says. "Also, this part of the street was in dire need." http://freshwatercleveland.com/devnews/johnnyvilleslugger072111.aspx

Little Italy is getting a wine bar! It'll be between Mia Bella and Corbo's bakery, one storefront down from the Murray Hill-Mayfield Rd intersection. The sign in the window said "Wine Bar coming soon" then something in Italian...driving past too fast, didn't have time to comprehend. I'm about 90% sure I know who's putting it in. I'll have more details soon.
