  1. Check out the other building below that are for sale...I had no idea (even more residential conversion opportunities). http://www.loopnet.com/Listing/16543565/1717-East-9th-St-Cleveland-OH/
  2. Correct. That's all that remains. And from the picture, it doesn't even looked like it's being lived in or used! I hope for history's sake, it will remain standing for some time.
  3. ^ Back to construction/renovations: Haunted Franklin Castle: Sale pending, renovation planned Historic property will become 3 residences By: Ted Kortan, newsnet5.com CLEVELAND - Changes are coming to Ohio City's famous and supposedly haunted Franklin Castle. On Monday, the city of Cleveland Planning Commission unanimously rezoned the castle property at 4308 Franklin Boulevard to allow for three residences. Ward 3 Councilman Joe Cimperman told NewsChannel5 the rezoning was a condition of a pending sale and redevelopment of the historic castle and rear carriage house. Cimperman would not reveal the identity of the alleged buyer except to say that it is a young woman with "the willingness and the wherewithal" to turn the space into her home and create two additional rental apartments. http://www.newsnet5.com/dpp/news/local_news/cleveland_metro/haunted-franklin-castle-sale-pending-renovation-planned
  4. From the UC thread: Here's all I've heard. For sure: Barnes and Noble Constantino's/grocery store Strong rumors: Panera Bread (chain) Weak Rumors: Jonathan Sawyer restaurant Chris Hodgson restaurant Not much word on any retail just yet, but I've heard the Maron's have been getting a TON of inquires....including many from suburban chains. The only true retail in University Circle is in Little Italy in the form of boutique shops. UC could use and support a lot more types of stores (pharmacy, computer, furniture, clothing, etc).
  5. ^^ I've had similar experiences with returning Case grad visits. They act like it's the Case of 2004 (which wasn't too bad BTW) and then are completely blown away when they see it for themselves or I update them And UC hasn't even broken ground yet on the Hazel Dr apartments, CWRU Student Center, and CWRU Athletic Field House....let alone the later phases of Uptown II and Lot 45. The area is frikin booming right now...plus UH, Cleveland Clinic, the VA hospital, and CWRU are all expanding in terms of people and new hires.

  7. ^ Damn freeway construction... Took out "Big Italy" too...
  8. I know, I know...this thread is very old. It is still an extremely interesting read that the newcomers may need to see: After searching www.historicaerials.com, I think I've found the very last two remaining apartment buildings left of the main part of "Little Hollywood." Check out the aerial view of 1952 compared to present day: Note the last two apartment buildings standing on E.75, just below the circle to the left. Here is the Google Streetview (address 1612 E.75th St): http://maps.google.com/maps?q=1612+e+75+cleveland+hough&layer=c&sll=41.509848,-81.636404&cbp=13,215.78,,0,5.2&cbll=41.50985,-81.63639&hl=en&sspn=0.006295,0.006295&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=1612+E+75th+St,+Cleveland,+Ohio+44103&ll=41.509848,-81.636404&spn=0.003945,0.010568&t=h&z=14&panoid=EmAeFy0MIqJy5M2fkE9K4w&source=embed&output=svembed
  9. Proposed demolition on the edge of University Circle...Magnolia Dr is a GEM by the way, surviving most of Case's mansion demolitions in the 1960's-1970's along Juniper, Hazel, Mistletoe, and E.115. Mt. Zion Congregational Church fights Cleveland historic district designation Published: Tuesday, July 19, 2011, 10:00 PM Thomas Ott, The Plain Dealer By Thomas Ott, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A historic, mostly black church braved a bombing that greeted its arrival on the fringe of Cleveland's University Circle in the 1950s. Decades later, the church finds itself in another struggle for acceptance. Mt. Zion Congregational Church, at East 108th Street and Magnolia Drive, wants to tear down two century-old houses it has used for offices and meeting space. Rev. Paul Hobson Sadler said an addition rising in place of the houses would allow the church to expand programs that feed homeless veterans, mentor youth and train the unemployed for jobs. Standing in the way is Councilman Jeff Johnson, who has proposed that City Council designate the church property and adjacent streets as a local historic district, a move that could make demolition difficult, if not impossible. The council could vote on the designation at a special meeting Wednesday. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2011/07/cleveland_historic_district_wo.html

  12. I really hope Browns resign FB Lawrence Vickers. He was an x-factor with paving the way for Peyton Hillis and previously Jerome Harrison.
  13. ^ You're right! Nice catch. It's the only one in Ohio too: http://www.wyndham.com/hoteldir/main.wnt
  14. What makes me mad, is that in European cities, saving the facade is always the first thought...not a crazy side proposition. As expected, they value their history way more than America. In March I was walking down a main street in Salamanca, Spain, and they were building a new hotel. They completely gutted/removed the entire building, but kept the face in order to sustain the streetscape and history. If we must destroy, let's at least consider keeping the facade integrated with the new design... Not to mention, how cool would that look!
  15. Great news! Thanks for the update. I'm also thinking these apartments will rent well as well.
  16. I wouldn't have too big of a problem if they could at least save the facade.

  22. Lyndhurst couple gives $17 million to UH Rainbow for new adolescent & young adult cancer institute Published: Tuesday, July 12, 2011, 8:00 PM Angela Townsend, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, OHIO -- More than 400 people who gathered Tuesday night at a private house in Gates Mills were the first to hear a big announcement: a local couple was giving a $17 million gift to University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital. The gift, from Char and Chuck Fowler, along with their daughters Holley Martens and Chann Spellman, is for the creation of the Angie Fowler Child & Young Adult Cancer Institute. It is the largest individual gift in Rainbow's history, and part of UH's $1 billion comprehensive fundraising campaign, publicly launched late last year. The Fowlers, of Lyndhurst, say they hope their gift will help attract more research geared toward the adolescent and young adult -- generally recognized as patients ages 13 to 29 -- cancer patient population. Patients in their 20s are treated both at Rainbow and at UH Seidman Cancer Center. http://www.cleveland.com/healthfit/index.ssf/2011/07/lyndhurst_couple_gives_17_mill.html
  23. Btw, I have now talked with three people who I never would have expected them to bring up Cleveland, and they all were telling me about the $5 Billion worth of new construction happening (I acted surprised and impressed of course). I'm guessing a large number of people saw that front page on Sunday. ( the power of positive press for a change ;) ) So those of us reading on Cleveland.com, ignore all the negative comments (like we're supposed to...) as they appear to be either politically based or from people who moved away many years ago. The local people I talked to recently were very excited and proud with all the new projects. (Again, I know I shouldn't read the comments, but the random people saying the Euclid corridor project was a sham running with empty buses made me lol. I haven't been able to get a damn seat on that thing in over two months--too packed with people!)

  25. Brandt Evans helps cook up a revival on Public Square Blog entry: July 11, 2011, 1:38 pm | Author: KATHY AMES CARR Chef Brandt Evans is banking that his early entry into the reviving Public Square area will be a boon to his first solo concept. The new restaurant opened in early June in the former May Co. at 170 Euclid Ave. on Public Square, and though business steadily is gaining ground, Mr. Evans is anticipating traffic from downtown's planned Cleveland Convention Center & Medical Mart and casino soon will breathe even more life into Pura Vida. The 130-seat restaurant's name translates to “pure life,” and that philosophy extends into Mr. Evans' culinary ideology of serving familiar food done well. About 99% of Pura Vida's dishes are made from scratch using farm fresh, organic and locally grown foods. http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20110711/BLOGS02/110719980
