  1. Thanks for the pic! Website now says reservations available "Aug 27 and Beyond." Doesn't everyone love that suburban style PNC bank branch built recently in the foreground? Right in one of Cleveland's urban districts...
  2. BUMP, Reminder about this week: 'Fun Size' filming continues in Cleveland Heights Published: Sunday, July 03, 2011, 12:00 PM Gina Christo, Sun News CLEVELAND HEIGHTS -- Paramount Pictures will be filming more of its 2012 film “Fun Size” in Cleveland Heights next week, according to Assistant City Manager Susanna Niermann O’Neil. She said the filming will take place for two days in Coventry Village. While the schedule remains unspecific for privacy purposes, the street will be closed to cars and pedestrians starting at 9 p.m. until early the next morning on July 5-6, she said. The crew has been filming in many different cities across Ohio. It chose to film a sequence of scenes in Coventry Village because of how it is filled with businesses. “The scene they are filming in Coventry Village is when the main female character goes shopping, and the way the shops are set up is what Paramount was looking for,” said Niermann O’Neil. http://blog.cleveland.com/sunpress/2011/07/fun_size_filming_continues_in.html

That was my rationale for the reverse. Ohio City is more happening at night, and seems like a more logical and central ending point. University Circle and Shaker Square are more happening by the day/evening.

Good first plan. My first thought is I would recommend making it a little more simple. Minimize the chance of people getting left behind or allow them to easily catch up. This means we may have to cut back some of the stops. My suggestion (actually reverse order to yours): 1) University Circle/Little Italy 2) Shaker Square/Larchmere 3) Downtown 4) Ohio City We may want to create a facebook page similar to Cleveland Critical Mass. We could update in real time where the group is at that point, so people could catch up...or simply create a schedule or two hour blocks each for area. Secondly, letting RTA know might have some benefit.
  6. Artist Sarah Paul's love for Cleveland blooms amid colorful collections in loft studio In the spring of 2010, three years after she came here to teach at the Cleveland Institute of Art, Sarah Paul finally felt that she was where she was always meant to be. She just never expected that place to be Cleveland. Or for it to take until she was almost 40. Paul is a New Yorker by birth and by temperament. She grew up on a nonworking farm near Albany, where everyone in the family made art or music. She went to New York City frequently and attended graduate school at the University of Buffalo. "I recognized that I was fully in love with Cleveland," she said. "It was like, 'Oh my God, this is where I need to be.' 8. And let's not forget a side note that is buried in the article: " In addition to tenants and workers in nearby buildings, PlayhouseSquare draws an estimated 1 million patrons each year. New homes for the Cleveland Playhouse and Case Western Reserve University's graduate acting program, and Cleveland State University's drama, dance and art classes and galleries will increase the population. Visitors to the city's future casino and Medical Mart will boost the numbers. Together, all these factors translate into a built-in audience of hungry guests. " Playhouse Square is definitely getting a major boost and has so much needed momentum. So when will we get the announcement for more residential? ;)
  9. Another storefront filed in Playhouse Square! and with good company... Zack Bruell to open restaurant in Cowell & Hubbard building near PlayhouseSquare Published: Thursday, June 30, 2011, 8:00 PM Joe Crea, The Plain Dealer By Joe Crea, The Plain Dealer A former gem on downtown Cleveland's retail landscape is about to gain new luster. This fall, the longtime flagship location of Cowell & Hubbard Co. jewelers will become home to Zack Bruell's fifth restaurant in the city. With its 18-foot ceilings and expansive windows, the space at 1305 Euclid Ave. will be converted into a modern French-themed dining room. Architect Ron Reed of Westlake Reed Leskosky will oversee design of the 6,500-square-foot space. To honor its legacy, the restaurant will be named Cowell & Hubbard. http://www.cleveland.com/dining/index.ssf/2011/06/zack_bruell_to_open_restaurant.html
  10. Looks like we have some talent in University Circle... Cleveland Institute of Music student Daniil Trifonov wins first prize at Tchaikovsky competition in Moscow Published: Thursday, June 30, 2011, 2:20 PM Donald Rosenberg, The Plain Dealer Russian pianist Daniil Trifonov, a 20-year-old student at the Cleveland Institute of Music, today won first prize at the 14th International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow – the biggest plum for a pianist in the competition world. Trifonov's triumph in Moscow is his third win at a major international piano competition in the past year. Last fall, he won third prize at the 16th International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, Poland. In May, he took first prize at the 13th Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition in Tel Aviv, Israel, where he also garnered the prizes for best chamber music performance and best Chopin performance and the Audience Favorite Prize. http://www.cleveland.com/musicdance/index.ssf/2011/06/tchaikovsky_story.html
  11. That spike in applications is going to benefit Case western for years to come. A 44% increase in applications will get then into additional "college rankings" and put them more on the national radar.
  12. Check out this option and newer program for incoming Case Western freshman: http://studentaffairs.case.edu/orientation/ventures/explores.html My favorite: - Learn how to use the RTA, public transportation - Visit historic and vibrant landmarks, maybe even meet some of Cleveland's dynamic leaders, and learn about your city's future
  13. ^I almost did. I walked past and people told me MTV camera had left 15 earlier. Missed my cameo by only a few min.
  14. Also, do you guys remember this commercial? I must not have been watching cable tv that year:

Great! Have a charity in mind? You're Little Italy, right? That was on my "proposed" route. Unfortunately not every neighborhood is connected very well on the weekend, but I think it'll be fun! Yep. And I can help with any proposed University Circle/Little Italy places (and route ideas). Let me know.

  19. MTV show "True Life" will air tomorrow at 11 pm entitled "I'm a Big Girl." It's about Holly Mangold, who is aiming to be in the 2012 Olympics. She's originally from the Dayton area, but goes to Ursuline College on Cleveland's Eastside. http://www.daytondailynews.com/blogs/content/shared-gen/blogs/dayton/seen_and_overheard/entries/2011/06/29/alter_grad_to_appear_of_mtv_th.html I remember when they were filming in Little Italy, so I'd expect some scenes in Cleveland. Here's a video: http://www.mtv.com/videos/misc/668266/sneak-peek-im-the-big-girl.jhtml#series=2214&seriesId=5232&channelId=1&id=1666501 EDIT: the very last scene in the video is Coltman Rd right by my house. Looks to be in front of Lou's Tavern (and she's holding the bartender at Euclid Tavern, who's name is Angelo).

  22. Monte Ahuja gives $10 million to Cleveland State University; largest gift in school's history (watch video) Published: Tuesday, June 28, 2011, 11:43 AM Karen Farkas, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Entrepreneur Monte Ahuja, who often credits Cleveland State University with motivating him to launch the company that made him a multimillionaire, has donated $10 million to the university -- the largest gift in its 47-year history. The money will fund scholarships and the new Monte Ahuja Endowed Chair of Global Business. CSU trustees this morning voted to rename the James J. Nance College of Business as the Monte Ahuja College of Business. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2011/06/monte_ahuja_gives_10_million_t.html
  23. and now it's moving: Wind turbine starts up in Euclid above Lincoln Electric Co. Published: Monday, June 27, 2011, 6:15 AM Andrew John, The Plain Dealer EUCLID, Ohio -- The sprawling blades on Ohio's largest wind turbine started turning 278 feet above the headquarters of Lincoln Electric this weekend in Euclid. Euclid Mayor Bill Cervenik said Sunday that he anticipates this as only the beginning of his city's place in becoming a symbol of clean alternative energy. "We have a lot more planned," Cervenik said of the massive wind turbines. "We're hoping this is the start of putting Euclid among the leaders in the nation." http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2011/06/wind_turnbine_starts_up_in_euc.html
  24. ^ Thanks for the clear-up. This however, wouldn't get the privilege of staying in Ohio or NEO. It's either Cleveland...or some other state. From the articles above: "The project would initially create 32 jobs in the area, but Team NEO hopes it would lead to more in subsequent years. “As companies start to cluster around this location, there would be new companies brought into the area and new jobs created,” Foran said." And "The agreement with NASA would last 10 years and could total $138 million, according to a news release from the Ohio Department of Development. SLA would not be based at NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland. Instead, it likely would be based in a soon-to-be renovated building adjacent to the new MidTown Tech Park on Euclid Avenue. NASA Glenn wants to remain neutral in the race for the space station lab so it might win work from whichever firm wins the contract. "
