Good to hear more money is being spent on Cleveland State security/ Cleveland State University Police Department gets new headquarters Published: Friday, June 10, 2011, 5:15 AM Karen Farkas, The Plain Dealer By Karen Farkas, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The building that once housed the former Bakers Local 19, a union once affiliated with the late Teamsters President Jackie Presser, is now home to the Cleveland State University Police Department. The building underwent a $3.1 million upgrade and includes a training room, intake area and a dispatch center that allows employees to view images from more than 900 cameras placed across the campus. MidTown Cleveland: General Discussion
Cross posted from the Midtown Developments thread: CWRU opens its National Children’s Study Center Office Posted: June 8th, 2011 The Case Western Reserve National Children’s Study Center will soon have approximately 15 people employed and working at the new office space (4600 Euclid Ave.). This new space is the Study Center’s first permanent location; it previously was located in borrowed space at the School of Medicine. It will also employ nearly 35 field workers who are in and out of the space as a home base. New people may be hired as the project expands. Various subcontractors (who are off site) include staff at the Cuyahoga County Board of Health, Invest in Children, University Hospitals, Cleveland Clinic and MetroHealth, along with others subcontracted to help with the study. Cleveland: University Circle (General): Development and News
Well, they did seem to have less and less items on the shelves for the past year, so I can't say people are too surprised. Murray Hill Market currently fills the need until the new Uptown grocery store goes in at the end o this year/early next year. But I wonder who owns the building?? This has to be some of the most valuable land currently not being used in UC. Maybe the motivation of potential profit as the reason for the closing? (sorry don't want to start rumors! I've just been in the business mindse lately!) With UC booming as it is right now, how great would a mixed-used urban infill project be along Euclid and along E. 116 ? I can only dream... But still, what a perfect location. Cleveland Food Co-op shuts its doors after 43 years http://www.cleveland.com/taste/index.ssf/2011/06/cleveland_food_co-op_shuts_its.html

From Litt: A new analysis from KA Architects tries to close the door on saving the Columbia Building as part of a casino visitor center Published: Wednesday, June 08, 2011, 4:10 PM Updated: Wednesday, June 08, 2011, 4:24 PM Steven Litt, The Plain Dealer By Steven Litt, The Plain Dealer. A new design analysis from KA Architects of Cleveland is part of an effort to show how the landmark Columbia Building in the Gateway neighborhood should be demolished to make way for a visitor center for the new Rock Gaming LLC casino in the nearby Higbee Building. The analysis is disappointing, but predictable. A pivotal vote on the fate of the visitor center and the Columbia Building is scheduled for Thursday at the third meeting of the Cleveland Landmarks Commission on the topic. The meeting is scheduled for 9 a.m. in Room 514 at Cleveland City Hall. In recent weeks, the city's Planning Commission and Design Review Committee gave the nod to the Rock Gaming proposal for its visitor center. Rock Gaming now needs approval from Landmarks before it can meet a self-imposed deadline of June 15 to start demolition in preparation for the visitor center. The company's preferred plan calls for a valet and parking facility that would turn most of the block on the southeast corner of Prospect Avenue and Ontario Street into a zone dominated by a new garage connected to the Higbee Building with an overhead walkway. http://blog.cleveland.com/architecture/2011/06/a_new_proposal_from_ka_archite.html

Cleveland: University Hospitals Expansion (University Circle)
Seidman Cancer Center is complete and OPENS today! UH Seidman Cancer Center in Cleveland brings specialty services together in one place Published: Sunday, June 05, 2011, 5:15 AM Angela Townsend, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The final judge of University Hospitals' new Seidman Cancer Center, which opens today, will be the patients. But listen to the enthusiastic leadership and staff talk about the free-standing cancer hospital, and they seem to have addressed what matters most: "seamless delivery," "state-of-the-art technology" and "model of care." The hospital is poised, they say, to transform how care is delivered by providing the full scope of cancer treatment under one roof. "There's the feeling that when you walk through the door here, this is your space," Fred Rothstein, president of UH Case Medical Center, told a group touring the cancer hospital in early April. Added Dr. Julian Kim, a surgical oncologist and Seidman's chief medical officer, "Patients will have the ability to see multiple specialists, not only on the same day, but in the same room." http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2011/06/uh_seidman_cancer_center_bring.html

Cleveland Museum of Art: Exhibits, News, & Info
Cross posted: Cleveland Museum of Art acquires a stellar collection of Congolese art from Odette Delenne of Belgium Published: Friday, June 03, 2011, 6:00 PM Steven Litt, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio — One of the world’s greatest available private collections of traditional Congolese sculpture from the 19th and early 20th centuries has been snagged by the Cleveland Museum of Art because a Belgian art lover became convinced her treasures would have the most impact in Cleveland. The museum announced Friday that it has acquired 35 of the best works from the collection amassed by Odette Delenne of Brussels and her late husband, Rene Delenne, from the late 1950s to the late 1970s. She was not interested in seeing the collection subsumed in a large museum in America, where it would have had less visibility than it will in Cleveland. “Her realization was that at the Met [the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York] the collection would be lost,” Petridis said. http://www.cleveland.com/arts/index.ssf/2011/06/cleveland_museum_of_art_acquir_3.html

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
On a similar note... Police Cutbacks Could Leave Downtown Unguarded By Day Posted by Kyle Swenson on Wed, Jun 1, 2011 at 12:04 PM Perhaps you’ve heard the one about how these are dark times for Ohio’s public employees? Now Cleveland Police may be supplying a new punch line. Eighty-one patrol officers were laid off this week, the indirect result of Governor John Kasich’s scalpel work with municipal budgets. Insiders say top brass have yet to work out how the department will reorganize, but at least one proposal working through the ranks could seriously affect downtown businesses that don’t butter their bread by cover of night. According to sources close to Cleveland Police, the department could soon reassign its downtown units to the night shift. That means the city would have a police presence from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. — the better to ensure that there are enough cops to referee downtown hot spots like West Sixth and East Fourth. http://www.clevescene.com/scene-and-heard/archives/2011/06/01/police-cutbacks-could-leave-downtown-unguarded-by-day

Cleveland: Downtown: East 4th Street Developments
I've heard from a fairly reliable source that the old "Bang and Clatter" (currently says "Something in the Silence) will be getting some use here in the next month or so. Apparently more free yoga is coming to downtown, and in this case, it will be used for free weekly community yoga sessions. They are awaiting Cleveland Fire Department approval. I'll update everyone once I get more information.

Cleveland: TV / Film Industry News
Wow! OK, I think it's to the point Cleveland needs some converted soundstages and more movie related industry. I talked to one of the cameramen for "The Avengers" and he asked me why Cleveland doesn't have any permanent soundstages in the city. I told him we're not used to movies being filmed here. He also said that cities like Boston and Washington DC have multiple places to rent or buy equipment (lighting, camera lense filters, etc) that if they need a quick adjustment they can go buy or rent the needed stuff that day of filming. He said Cleveland seems to lack these businesses, although he did mention he'd stopped into Dodd camera. Four more Hollywood films slated to be shot soon in Ohio: Kim Basinger, Val Kilmer among stars Published: Tuesday, May 31, 2011, 2:30 PM Updated: Tuesday, May 31, 2011, 2:45 PM Michael Sangiacomo, The Plain Dealer By Michael Sangiacomo, The Plain Dealer Four new films will be shot in Ohio, bringing to 21 the number of films to be made here since former Gov. Ted Strickland's Motion Picture Tax Credit program went into effect last year. The Ohio Film Office announced the latest four films to be shot are: "Liberal Arts," starring "How I Met Your Mother" actor and Columbus-native Josh Radnor; "Old Fashioned," written and directed by former New Philadelphia resident Rik Swartzwelder; "Over the Wall," starring Kim Basinger, Nick Stahl and Freddy Rodriguez ;and "Seven Below Zero" starring Val Kilmer. These movies, along with films that will be shot in Cleveland including "The Avengers," a big-budget superhero film starring Robert Downey Jr., Samuel L. Jackson and others; "Boot Tracks" starring Matt Dillon; and "Fun Size," starring Nickelodeon star Victoria Justice, are putting Ohio on the map as a state friendly to film producers. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2011/05/four_more_films_slated_to_be_s.html
