  1. And now there's this article: So two movies??? Upcoming "Avengers" movie will be filmed in Cleveland Published: Thursday, March 03, 2011, 2:37 PM Updated: Thursday, March 03, 2011, 2:44 PM By Michael Sangiacomo, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Avengers are coming to Cleveland! Gov. John Kasich announced that the upcoming Marvel movie featuring the superhero team, The Avengers, scheduled for a 2012 release, will be filmed in Cleveland. He made the announcement before Mayor Frank Jackson's State of the City address this afternoon at the City Club. It was confirmed by Katie Sabatino, publicist for the Ohio Film Office, who said the agreement was made with Marvel Comics after negotiations. "We have been in dialogue with Marvel Comics all week and we finally reached an agreement," she said. "We're very excited about it." Wayne Hill, chairman of the Greater Cleveland Commission, said The Avengers movie will be the largest film ever made in Ohio and that filming is expected to start in the film. Ivan Schwartz, executive director of the Greater Cleveland Film Commission, said the movie also means jobs. "It's tremendous for the city's and the regional effort to have films made here," he said. "It means a lot of jobs for people in our area." The film was to have been shot in Detroit, but was moved to Cleveland after reports that Michigan's governor planned to eliminate the tax credits. "Marvel has stated publicly that the change was because of the tax credit loss," said Hill. "The fact that we have it in Ohio has made a huge difference." http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2011/03/upcoming_avengers_movie_will_b.html

  5. Another business in University Circle-Cleveland Clinic. Hope they grow. Irish medical device design company opens office near Cleveland Clinic By CHUCK SODER 1:50 pm, March 1, 2011 An Irish company that helps medical device companies design their products has opened a small office near the Cleveland Clinic. Creganna-Tactx Medical employs two business development specialists at its new office in the Clinic's Global Cardiovascular Innovation Center, an incubator designed to accelerate the development of companies creating cardiovascular technologies and other medical products. The office is expected to grow over time and eventually could have equipment that area companies could use to create prototypes of their products, said Tom Sudow, vice president of business attraction for Team NEO. The regional business attraction agency is helping the Clinic recruit tenants for the center, located at 10000 Cedar Ave. http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20110301/FREE/110309979
  6. Well the Indians ownership is trying. First a three-year contract for Snow Days and now this. Now, let's just get some more players! Cleveland Indians Music Festival Coming This Summer Written By: Craig Lyndall | Category: Cleveland Indians A couple quotes come to mind right off the bat. ”Why can’t they just focus on putting a good product on the baseball field?” Or, “Don’t they have better things to spend their time on other than music as a baseball organization?” Now that I have those out of the way for all the cynical, angry people who also made fun of “Snow Days” let’s talk about what the Indians are doing this summer. On June 11th at 4:00 PM (just after the Indians hopefully beat the Yankees in the Bronx) Progressive Field will host a country music show featuring Brad Paisley, Blake Shelton, and Jerrod Niemann. As I said in the open, I am sure a lot of people who have been less than satisfied with the baseball team over the last couple years will have arrows aimed squarely at the Tribe for this. Is it a way for the Cleveland Indians to make money unrelated to baseball? Yep, it sure is. Still, to think that the Indians can’t run their baseball business and also use their facility for things like “Snow Days” and rock country concerts while the team is away in the summer time is ridiculous. http://www.waitingfornextyear.com/2011/03/cleveland-indians-music-festival-coming-this-summer/

  8. Oh this is good--a bunch of nerds who can't hold their own Downtown  Cleveland State University scholarships aimed at attracting good students to live on campus Published: Tuesday, March 01, 2011, 8:00 PM By Karen Farkas, The Plain Dealer Cleveland State University is offering annual scholarships of $5,100 aimed at improving the academic quality of its students and convincing them to live on campus. CSU's Freshmen Scholars program, introduced last fall, will now include an added incentive for students to live in residence halls. The Freshman Scholars program provides a $3,000 scholarship to incoming freshmen who have a 3.0 GPA in high school and an ACT score of at least 23. The scholarship is renewable if the student maintains a 3.0 GPA and completes at least 12 credit hours each semester. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2011/03/cleveland_state_will_increase.html

  11. I have no idea how I didn't realize University Circle is getting two new Rapid Stations. I guess I was thinking they were going to build the one for Uptown, and close the other two. Great to hear! I've updated the list.
  12. ^Thanks KJP. When does the Cedar-UC station begin construction? EDIT: KJP, I am a little confused. Can you provide links to both projects?
  13. Some more indepth news coverage from the PD...from quick estimates, they should have at least $44.5 million of the money right now...not too bad for pure donations. I had heard they were looking to build at facility over $60 million, so the $50 million could be a little low. I wonder why the timeline is 5 years?? Is this supposed to be top, top notch?? Who knows. When the library was built, it has some of the best technology in the entire nation, including the fastest internet speeds: Case Western Reserve University gets $7 million gift for new student center Published: Tuesday, March 01, 2011, 6:51 AM Updated: Tuesday, March 01, 2011, 9:09 AM By Karen Farkas, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio - Case Western Reserve University has received a $7 million gift from the Kelvin and Eleanor Smith Foundation for the construction of a new student center. While the university would not reveal how much it has raised for the $50 million project, it is enough to move forward with the center, according to a spokeswoman. The center, expected to open in five years, will be at the corner of East Boulevard and Bellflower Road, next to the Kelvin Smith Library, which was built with the support of the foundation in 1996. University officials would not say when they expect to break ground for the new center or when an architect will be named, the spokeswoman said Monday. CWRU interviewed four finalists in mid-December. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2011/03/case_western_reserve_universit_22.html

  15. More good news on CWRU campus, Adelbert road is now reopened! Adelbert Road Reopened for Vehicular Traffic Effective Monday afternoon, Adelbert Road reopened to vehicular traffic in both directions. The walks on each side of the street will remain closed through about mid-March. The roadway closure is part of a major infrastructure project for the area. The construction-related closure is part of the third phase of a project that began late last year near Crawford Hall. It will conclude this spring near the Millis Science Center. This project will enhance the efficiency of air conditioning and other services requiring chilled water. It is expected to result in long-term operational and capital savings for Case Western Reserve University and contribute to the university’s sustainability efforts. Details regarding the timing of this and successive phases will be posted in The Daily as they become available. http://blog.case.edu/case-news/2011/03/01/adelbert_road_reopened_for_vehicular_traffic
  16. Big news for CWRU today, $7 million more has been donated for the new CWRU Student Center, to be built across from the Cleveland Museum of Art. Kelvin and Eleanor Smith Foundation Commits $7 Million to Support University Center Project The Kelvin and Eleanor Smith Foundation has made a $7 million commitment to Case Western Reserve University to support the university center project on campus. “My grandparents were very elegant people, and they cared deeply for others,” said Ellen Stirn Mavec, president of the Kelvin and Eleanor Smith Foundation. “They really wanted to help people find their dreams and make them happen. They would be excited about the possibility of a central place on campus that brings people together for conversation and to enjoy one another.” http://blog.case.edu/case-news/2011/03/01/kelvin_and_eleanor_smith_foundation_commits_7_million_to_support_university_center_project

  20. No problem at all! I walk past this stuff everyday so it's always on my mind and an easy list to make.
  21. I have it under "planning stages," my second one listed. This project is very much a good ahead, as it is funded by federal money.

Cleveland Marathon officials awaiting final approval on 2011 course Published: Monday, February 28, 2011, 6:47 AM Updated: Monday, February 28, 2011, 7:48 AM By Jodie Valade, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Sometimes change comes about slowly after endless plotting and planning. Sometimes change comes about quickly, in the blink of an eye. Sometimes it occurs both ways -- only because of the major construction of a Medical Mart in downtown Cleveland. Because of the Medical Mart construction begun last fall at St. Clair and Ontario streets, the course for the Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon has to be altered for the May 15 race. Organizers have been working on the course alterations seemingly each day. But final approval still has not been granted by all parties -- though event officials are hopeful for the final course map within a few days. The plan is to change the start and finish lines so that both occur near the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Cleveland Browns Stadium. In previous years, the start has been at St. Clair and East Ninth streets, with the finish at Lakeside and East Sixth Street. http://www.cleveland.com/sports/index.ssf/2011/02/cleveland_marathon_officials_a.html
