  5. The longer I stare at this map, the happier I get. Such a night a day difference from what UC used to be. http://www.uptowncleveland.com/pdfs/uptown-map.pdf
  6. ^Case is also currently having a student competition to redesign the first floor of KSL. http://library.case.edu/ksl/whoweare/firstfloorredesign.html
  7. I'm surprised this wasn't posted beforehand. I've always envisioned the property where CIA will be vacating as a perfect location for residential and storefronts construction... Very similar to Uptown. And now with CWRU looking to build a $50 million presumely 24-hr student center across the street, I think this even more. From Litt: http://blog.cleveland.com/architecture/2010/12/case_western_reserve_universit_2.html Case Western Reserve University to choose an architect from four finalists to design its new Tinkham Veale University Center Case Western Reserve University is scheduled to interview four finalists today in its process to select an architect for its proposed $50 million Tinkham Veale University Center -- a potential new landmark in University Circle. Stephen Campbell, the university's vice president for campus planning and facilities management, declined to identify the finalists, but said Thursday that "there are high design firms as part of the group we're considering, in part because of the aspirational aesthetic needs for the facility established by [CWRU President] Barbara [snyder] and others." Campbell said he expects Snyder and university trustees to appoint an architect by February.
  8. Here is the correct page Little Italy Cleveland for Xmas I'm buying you a class on how to post (facebook) links and pictures (via photobucket)! he he he he :P ;) ;D I'd appreciate any gift lol. But they do have an actual facebook group "Murray Hill Market." I don't know why I can never post a fb group link.
  9. Here's a video as of Nov. 29. 2010: UH Seidman Cancer Center President's Message
  10. ^Oh and they have a Facebook page too! http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/group.php?gid=138409979528378
  11. I stopped into the still underconstruction "Murray Hill Market," but I have some good things to report: 1) First of all, the owners are GREAT people and want to help to neighborhood, students, and University Circle...they're theme seems to scream Healthy, Healthy, Healthy and Fresh, Fresh, Fresh. I spent almost an hour talking to one of the owners, Michelle (the wife) and she is extremely friendly and has a great culinary, italian background. 2) The opening will be the first week of Jan....mostly likely towards the end of the week. It will be a soft opening. 3) The "Grand Opening" will be right after CWRU, CIA, and CIM returns for classes...so probably about Jan 17 to 24 somewhere. 4) The hours will be 8am -8 pm Mon - Sat, 9 am-5 pm Sun 5) They will have fresh produce, from Miles Farmers Market and North Union Farmers Markets. Some other highlights include: a great italian selection (olive oil, sauce, herbs), Ohio City Pasta, Jenni's Ice Cream, Robinson's Apples, Asian and Indian groceries for the University Circle demographic, "On the Rise" bread from Cleveland Hts, ezekiel bread, paper products, soaps, cleaners, toiletries, etc 6) They will serve a simple hot breakfast option (oatmeal with fresh berries, egg sandwich on italian bread, all coffee is french-pressed) and a hot lunch (soup of the day and/or chili ... hot sandwich). they will also have a "cheese of the week" to sample as you walk in...and probably some other samples. 7) My favorite quote from the owner Michelle: "If someone wants to learn how to make my soup, I will teach them right here. I would rather them buy the ingredients here for $5, learn how to make it, and then have soup for a week. Let people know I will offer free cooking lessons. I don't want people buying any of that canned crap. I have it if it's an emergency, but that's it." Needless to say, I'm going to be taking advantage of any culinary skills I can pick up from my new neighborhood grocery store. This is about as perfect of an example as you can get with supporting a local, neighborhood "Ma and Pa" style business. I highly recommend spending your hard-earned money with getting this place up and running smoothly. Buy local!
  12. This doesn't sound too bad at all: GE Lighting offers jobs, money to win Cleveland's bid for LED lights Published: Tuesday, December 14, 2010, 7:00 AM Mark Gillispie, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- GE Lighting Solutions hopes its offer of jobs and money will garner Cleveland's business for high-tech lights even though its bid did not meet the city's specifications. GE publicly disclosed for the first time Monday that it would create 50 jobs in Cleveland and give the city $150,000 a year during the proposed 10-year contract. The cash is roughly what the city would receive in income taxes from 350 full-time workers making $10 an hour. Mayor Frank Jackson is looking for a company willing to build a manufacturing and research facility in Cleveland and create 350 jobs in exchange for the right to sell the city light-emitting diodes (LEDs). http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2010/12/ge_lighting_offers_jobs_money.html
  13. Any reason why the Euclid Ave Church of God (8601 Euclid Ave) is slated for demolition?? http://planning.city.cleveland.oh.us/landmark/agenda/photo/12092010/index.php Are we really going to lose two historic churches on the same stretch of Euclid Ave in less than one year??
  14. From the Dec 2 Design Review Committee notes: http://www.universitycircle.org/userfiles/file/Design%20District%20Agendas/Euclid%20Corridor%20Design%20Review%20Agenda%2012_2_10.pdf 1. University Circle Hotel (3nd & final review) (N) 2. Hazel Drive Housing Development (2nd Review) (N) 3. Tudor Arms Signage (L) Next meeting Dec 16...no idea of the agenda.
  15. KJP, it's good to be home. It's safe to say everyone from North Carolina, Texas, Mississippi, and Qatar now thinks Cleveland, OH is like Paris, France thanks to how much I promoted it. I have people lining up to visit me. The listing has been updated. I hope this clears up any confusion with the hotels in UC.
  16. ^ Thanks. If I hear anything more, I'll plan on heading down there.
  17. That's where I live! And I frikin love it... Within 100 meters of the intersection of the Redline and Healthline. Plus, I've been living car-free since I've moved back and was discharged from the military. In regards to the Uptown Hotel, the one I listed was the Courtyard Marriott. I was under the assumption the proposed other hotel would be under "Uptown Phase II". Either way it wouldn't be a bad idea to list, and once I get to a computer and not an iPhone, I'll list it. Thanks again!
  18. Also, here is the UCI 2010 Annual Report. Take special note of the "Development" section--so many little improvements along the way: http://universitycircle.org/annual2010/
  19. I completely agree. In the artcle, it clearly states how the cops systematically check everyone.
  20. BIG NEWS! This is another step forward for linking University Circle. University Circle Inc. aims to support walking tour, maintenance through $5.5 million fundraising campaign Published: Thursday, December 02, 2010, 7:36 PM Michelle Jarboe, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A walking tour of the people, places and past of University Circle is part of a new campaign to attract money and visitors to the growing neighborhood. CircleWalk, a path lined with signs and interactive features, could lead passersby into Cleveland museums, to the front doors of hospitals and up the steps of educational institutions. Nonprofit group University Circle Inc. expects to choose a planning and design team early next year for the project, an estimated $2 million investment. CircleWalk, with more elaborate signs and potential video and audio features, will be a longer-term project. A very preliminary sketch of the tour shows a meandering path that wraps around the Case Western Reserve University campus, museums and neighborhoods. The actual layout for the tour has not been determined, but it's likely to be a self-guided path of 1 to 2 miles. http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2010/12/university_circle_inc_aims_to.html
  21. Here's a nice feel good story about Judson Manor in University Circle: Young resident musicians bring cultural spark to assisted-living facility in Cleveland Published: Monday, November 29, 2010, 6:00 AM Peter Zicari, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Two Cleveland Institute of Music graduate students bring a youthful spark to men and women in the sunset of their lives. Caitlin Lynch, a violist, and Mary Vanhoozer, a pianist, live in Judson Manor, an independent and assisted-living facility for the elderly in University Circle. The two practice in the ballroom and lobby, hang out with their neighbors and attend happy hour and morning coffee klatches. Clara Catliota, 89, embraced Lynch after the concert. They have become fast friends. "They have put joy into our lives," Catliota said. "It is the best thing that has happened to us. It is wonderful." http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2010/11/young_resident_musicians_bring.html
  22. Cleveland State is now 12-0. Their next game is a big one @ West Virginia on Dec 18. Anyone know if there is a watch party or if it will be televised? A Final Chance To Influence Bridge Designers The three-year, $287 million project is Ohio’s largest transportation project, and is nearing the end of the planning phase. Builder Walsh Construction and designer HNTB Ohio are still soliciting design ideas, through the ODOT web site, from bridge users and nearby residents. At tonight’s meeting at the Pilgrim Church Fellowship Hall in Tremont, they’ll offer comparative views of the neighborhood, allowing visitors to see for themselves how the bridge proposal fits its surrounding. http://www.wcpn.org/WCPN/news/37389
  24. Port officials take a shot at diverting some imported liquor shipments from East Coast to Cleveland By JAY MILLER 4:30 am, December 13, 2010 A spokeswoman for the Ohio Division of Liquor Control said her agency convened a meeting in Columbus on Oct. 20 to open the discussion with spirits importers about the feasibility of rerouting shipments of scotch, vodka and other liquors. The shipments, now received at East Coast ports, could be sent up the St. Lawrence Seaway to the docks of the Port of Cleveland. The longshoremen's union for many years has been pressing the Port Authority to expand its maritime operations to make more work for local stevedores. Now, with a new maritime leader recently hired, the Port Authority is focusing on expanding business along the Cleveland waterfront. http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20101213/SUB1/101219971#
