Cleveland: Opportunity Corridor Boulevard
Not a very highly attended meeting...maybe it's a correlation to the population...;) Cleveland's proposed Opportunity Corridor generates anxiety and hope at East Side meeting Published: Wednesday, October 06, 2010, 12:01 AM Tom Breckenridge, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- East Side residents had a mix of emotions -- fear battling hope, mostly -- as they eyeballed future routes for the proposed Opportunity Corridor on Tuesday night. About 50 residents and officials gathered at Mount Sinai Baptist Church on Woodland Avenue to view plans and comment on the planned 2 3/4-mile boulevard that would link Interstate 490 at East 55th Street with University Circle. Business and elected leaders, including Mayor Frank Jackson, support the project as a way to move traffic more efficiently to University Circle, while spurring development in the struggling neighborhoods of Slavic Village, Kinsman, Fairfax and Buckeye. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2010/10/clevelands_proposed_opportunit.html

Cleveland: Food Trucks/Carts News & Discussion
Ended at #3: Dim and Den Sum of Cleveland takes third place in 'Great Food Truck Race' Published: Tuesday, October 05, 2010, 1:52 PM Joe Crea, The Plain Dealer An outpouring of support from Cleveland voters earned the Dim and Den Sum food truck third place in the "Great Food Truck Race" series on Food Network. "[That's] third place out of 280 trucks," Dim and Den spokeswoman Amber Smith wrote in an e-mail. Not enough to win the $10,000 prize -- but whether its ranking will translate into a spot for chef Chris Hodgson and the team on next season's series remains to be seen. Food Network officials are mum but, adds Smith, "we figure that they would ask us to be on the show, considering the number of dedicated fans we had voting for us every day." http://www.cleveland.com/taste/index.ssf/2010/10/dim_and_den_sum_of_cleveland_t.html

Cleveland Public Schools: News and Discussion
The #1 reason families don't move into the city is lack of public school option. Someday, this absolutely needs to be fixed: Cleveland schools try to solve attendance, tardiness problems Published: Tuesday, October 05, 2010, 8:00 AM Thomas Ott, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Cleveland schools will be hard-pressed to deliver on a plan to raise test scores and graduation rates if students fail to show up or to get there on time. Poor attendance and widespread tardiness continue to be serious problems as the district embarks on the first year of its academic transformation plan, a sweeping set of reforms. A report for Sept. 27, one month into the school year, shows that 16 percent of the 45,000-plus students were absent or late, but the numbers ran much higher at some buildings, particularly high schools. For example, 21 percent of the students at East Tech High School were listed as absent, and 9 percent were late. In the Ninth Grade Academy, one of four independent small schools operating within East Tech this year, nearly 40 percent of the 146 students either didn't show up or came tardy. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2010/10/cleveland_schools_battle_atten.html

Cleveland: Cleveland Clinic News & Info
Chris Coburn: Captain of the Cleveland Clinic Innovations crew Chris Coburn is the captain of Cleveland Clinic Innovations, the corporate venturing arm of the Cleveland Clinic. The 53-year-old fitness enthusiast and his crew have an important job: nurturing inventions that emerge from several thousand scientists and doctors at the nation’s top heart hospital, and guiding them through a years-long process to commercial viability, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Known simply as Cleveland Clinic Innovations (CCI), the group of more than 35 people recently started their second decade with a first-of-its-kind venture ranking, a brand-new incubator building and a growing portfolio of spin-out companies. Perhaps most impressive, those companies ’ 33 in all ’ have attracted more than $340 million in follow-on funding from other investors. About two weeks ago, Arterial Remodeling Technologies, a French company whose technology was developed in part by the Cleveland Clinic, said it raised $8.5 million in venture capital funding to further develop its biodegradable stents. By the way, the group got their Third Frontier Grant. And Coburn and his staff moved into the resulting technology incubator — the $19-million, 50,000-square-foot Global Cardiovascular Innovation Center on the southern edge of the Clinics main campus — in April. http://www.medcitynews.com/2010/10/chris-coburn-captain-of-the-cleveland-clinic-innovations-crew/

Keep pumping out those entrepreneurs Cleveland! Cleveland: Twenty-somethings in spotlight for entrepreneurial efforts Amanda Barren CLEVELAND -- Two 23-year-olds are putting Cleveland in the spotlight for their work as entrepreneurs. As a part of its sixth annual list, Bloomberg Businessweek has nominated Rick Arlow and John Knific to a list of 25 most impressive young entrepreneurs under the age of 25. Both young men have their companies based in Cleveland. Arlow is a second-year medical student at Case Western Reserve University. Knific runs his business out of his home in Westlake. The two know each other through networking for their businesses, but both have start-up's that couldn't be more different. Arlow is from New Jersey and has a background as an EMT. He came to Cleveland to attend CWRU. He says the extensive medical community in Cleveland is a huge draw for basing his company here. "We want to take advantage of this community and really come here for the long term and create a new company that helps both the economy here in Cleveland as well as create new products that will help patients worldwide." http://www.wkyc.com/news/local/story.aspx?storyid=151544&catid=45

Cleveland: Local Media News & Discussion
:-o :-o Say it ain't so!!! :-o :-o Media News: Brian Windhorst to Leave Cleveland Plain Dealer Written By: Scott | Category: Cleveland Cavaliers | Comments: 4 What was just a discussion between two parties a few weeks ago appears to be confirmed: Brian Windhorst will be leaving Cleveland’s Plain Dealer to cover the Miami Heat exclusively for ESPN and ESPN.com. The man affectionately known as “Windy” has been a staple among Cavaliers coverage since breaking in with the Akron Beacon-Journal from 2003 to 2008, subsequently transitioning over to the PD during what was effectively the peak of the LeBron James tenure with the team. Frequently appearing on ESPN.com in the past, Windhorst had been covering James when the two-time MVP was still in high school at St. Vincent-St. Mary. Also a St. V’s alum, it is commonly said that the two men have had parallels within the basketball media universe. Windhorst is largely considered to be among the upper echelon in NBA beat writers, being the youngest in “the game” when he started with the ABJ in 2003. Alas, said parallels will continue on to Miami where James will play for the foreseeable future after leaving Cleveland during the most recent free agency period with Windhorst there to keep his finger on the proverbial pulse. http://www.waitingfornextyear.com/?p=34117

Cleveland: Case Western Reserve University News & Info
More money getting pumped into Cleveland/CWRU: Case Western Reserve jumps 18 spots, to 26th, in federal research funding A National Science Foundation report released this week reveals that Case Western Reserve University’s share of federal funding for research and development has grown dramatically over the past five years. The university ranked 26th in the nation in 2009 –18 places higher than in 2004. The university spent $313 million in federal dollars for research in 2009, up from $195.5 million in 2004 (figures for fiscal year 2010 were not available in time for the ranking). The larger grants and awards that fueled the growth have come primarily from the National Institutes of Health to the School of Medicine. “The rankings demonstrate Case Western Reserve University’s commitment to world-class research,” said Julie Rehm, PhD, associate dean in the School of Medicine and associate vice president at Case Western Reserve University for strategic initiatives. http://blog.case.edu/case-news/2010/09/30/case_western_reserve_jumps_18_spots_to_26th_in_federal_research_funding

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
Cleveland City Planning Commission approves revised plans for convention center Published: Friday, October 01, 2010, 1:06 PM Steven Litt, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Cleveland City Planning Commission is satisfied that the revised and more costly plans for a new downtown convention center will give the city a facility competitive with centers in cities including Cincinnati, Columbus and Indianapolis. Today, the commission voted 6-0 to approve the new plans, developed over the past month by MMPI Inc. of Chicago, which will build and operate the facility, along with a new medical mart, under an agreement with Cuyahoga County. The planning commission's action paves the way for a definitive agreement in which the city will sell the existing convention center to the county for $20 million, followed by a groundbreaking this fall. http://blog.cleveland.com/architecture/2010/10/cleveland_city_planning_commis_2.html
