  3. Besides TransDigm, another Cleveland company I am interested with knowing more about is "Sideways." Here's about their opening up of a New York office location: From the NYC Crain's Business: Digital startup grabs floor in Garment District A young but fast-growing digital media company called Sideways signed a seven-year lease for new space at 212 W. 35th St. With demand surging for the Cleveland-based company’s digital applications for smart phones and digital tablets, Sideways will take on 3,600 square feet, or the entire 15th floor, in the 16-story Garment District building. The asking rent was $30 a square foot. http://www.crainsnewyork.com/apps/pbcs.dll/dcce?Site=CN&Date=20100928&Module=12&Kategori=real_estate&Class=122&Type=deals_active&ID=2509145 Here's some of their work: http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/sideways-releases-first-on-device-ipad-magazine-96048319.html Question -- Where the hell are they located in Cleveland??

  5. Having "new blood" as the chief executive of the Port Authority is going to have a huge effect on making this project happen. He wasn't here for the past few failed attempts and only sees the potential and possibilities. Not to mention, he seems like a person people will follow. Lake Erie ferry an unsinkable idea: editorial Published: Tuesday, September 28, 2010, 3:59 AM The Plain Dealer Editorial Board Will Friedman believes in ferries. And he ain't just whistling pixie. The chief executive of the Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority is testing the waters for a cross-lake ferry that would link Cleveland to picturesque Port Stanley, Ontario. The potential traffic is substantial. Canada is Ohio's top export market, with $14.1 million in Ohio-made goods crossing the border last year. Making it quicker and, in these days of pricey fuel, cheaper for people and trucks to make the trip would be appealing. The availability of a ferry would cut a six-hour-plus drive in half. Friedman has hired a consultant to prepare a $19,500 feasibility study to gauge Canadian support for the service, as well as to identify a potential operator. http://www.cleveland.com/opinion/index.ssf/2010/09/lake_erie_ferry_an_unsinkable.html
  6. Great to see more national exposure from the Rock Hall Rock Hall designates New Orleans studio landmark The Associated Press Updated 6:07 PM Monday, September 27, 2010 CLEVELAND — The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum has designated a former New Orleans music studio as a rock 'n' roll landmark. The Rock Hall in Cleveland said Monday that the unveiling of the marker at the former J&M Studios site kicked off the annual Ponderosa Stomp music festival in New Orleans on Friday. The Rock Hall says J&M Studios helped give birth to rock 'n' roll with recording sessions featuring pioneers such as Fats Domino and Little Richard. The studio owned and operated by Cosimo Matassa produced records from 1947 to 1956. http://www.daytondailynews.com/news/ohio-news/rock-hall-designates-new-orleans-studio-landmark-947946.html

The Rice Branch, adjacent to the old St. Luke's Medical Center campus on Shaker Boulevard, is part of a large, mixed-use project built around the dormant hospital building. 9. One of the hidden gems in University Circle is the Cozad-Bates House (built 1853). It has a stong history as a stop on the Underground Railroad (I hope someday it can open up as an "Underground Railroad Museum," adding even another cultural attraction to University Circle.) This past summer, $200,000 was spent repairing its roof. Funds are still being raised for it's complete rehabilitation: http://www.restoreclevelandhope.org/CBhouse.html Here's some more info on it: http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2008/06/cozadbates_house_honored_with.html

  11. Has anyone heard of this before? I was in Raleigh this past weekend, and I was shocked when I came across an area between Oakwood and Downtown where historic houses had been moved from elsewhere (generally within 1 mile) and lined up side by side creating an older looking neighborhood. Particularily, there was one development that had brand new, all brick townhomes (built in an older style) bracketed with century old victorian homes on the corners. How common is this? I immediately thought of filling in some gaps on Prospect Ave. in Cleveland
  12. Expansion, expansion, expansion... Growth on tap at Great Lakes Brewing Co. Ohio City brewer creates buzz with $6 million in capital improvements that will bolster production By KATHY AMES CARR 4:30 am, September 27, 2010 Great Lakes Brewing Co. has been fulfilling its expansion plans in the same way fans of its carefully crafted beers and ales slake their thirst — by sipping, not gulping down market share all at once. As a result, the brewer in Cleveland's Ohio City neighborhood has been growing slowly and methodically within its 65,000-square-foot brewhouse on Carroll Avenue between West 26th and West 28th streets. The latest installment of its expansion effort involves a $6 million investment that would boost its production capacity to meet heightened demand. When the addition of brewing and bottling equipment is complete at the end of 2013, Great Lakes will be at a capacity of 150,000 to 175,000 barrels per year, up a minimum of 50% from its current capacity of about 100,000 barrels. It brewed 87,000 barrels last year. http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20100927/SUB1/309279980

  15. GCSC snagged another National Event: Cleveland to host the 2012 National Collegiate Women's Bowling Championship The Suburbanite Posted Sep 27, 2010 @ 10:28 AM Cleveland, Ohio — The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has announced that the Mid-American Conference and the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission have been selected as the hosts for the 2012 National Collegiate Women’s Bowling Championship. 16. 3-C and Ferry for Cleveland?? Fingers crossed... Changes in Canada revive hopes for Cleveland-to-Port Stanley, Ontario, ferry service Published: Monday, September 27, 2010, 10:00 AM James F. McCarty,The Plain Dealer William Friedman, the new chief executive of the Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority, thinks there are good reasons for that. He said the time has never been better for a cross-lake ferry service. It would be profitable without government subsidies and provide a faster, cheaper and environmentally cleaner way to move cargo on trucks and people in cars between the two countries, Friedman said. U.S. Rep. Steve LaTourette of Bainbridge Township agrees and said nearly $7 million in federal government grants remains earmarked for ships and a terminal for the first Northeast Ohio port city that succeeds in nailing down a ferry deal. "I still think it's the way of the future," LaTourette said in an interview last week. "First and foremost, a ferry would provide a boost for the economic competition of the region. It would be great for jobs, especially in the auto-parts industry." http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2010/09/changes_in_canada_revive_hopes.html

Cleveland Foundation adds $500k to Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland building campaign Published: Friday, September 24, 2010, 5:42 PM Steven Litt, The Plain Dealer Thanks to the Cleveland Foundation, the Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland jumped $500,000 closer to its goal of raising $26.3 million for its proposed new building by the end of October. The foundation, which had donated $1 million toward the new museum building in 2006, announced Friday it was making a second grant for a construction project, something it rarely does. "This is pretty unusual for us," said Robert Eckardt, senior vice president for programs and evaluation at the foundation. "The board [of directors] wanted to send a signal both of the importance of the project, and the importance of getting it done." MOCA has raised $22.8 million for the project, not including the foundation's grant. It needs to complete fundraising by Oct. 29 in order to qualify for federal and State of Ohio tax credits, which could pump an additional $4.5 million into MOCA's endowment. That money would help pay for ongoing operations in the new building. http://blog.cleveland.com/architecture/2010/09/cleveland_foundation_adds_500k.html
