  3. Next to NASA and Hopkins: The Aviator takes off with refreshed design in former 100th Bomb Group space (photos) Published: Apr. 18, 2022, 5:30 a.m. By Marc Bona, cleveland.com CLEVELAND, Ohio – You’ll notice the first difference between The Aviator and its former occupant, the 100th Bomb Group, before you walk in the doors. The airplanes are gone. The mounted planes stood outside the space adjacent to Cleveland Hopkins International Airport for years. But new owners have come in and revamped the design, look and amenities of the location. It’s been rehauled and converted it into an event center, pub and restaurant. The Aviator, which opened April 6, is owned by Khadar Soussou; the Rababy family, which runs United Concessions Group at airports including Cleveland Hopkins; and Tony Di Fiore. All have known each other for years. “They spared no expense in building this place,” Soussou said of the former owners, California-based Specialty Restaurants Corp. “The bones were here. We just had to make it look pretty again. … " https://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/2022/04/the-aviator-takes-off-with-refreshed-design-in-former-100th-bomb-group-space-photos.html
  4. Correct, Cleveland is home to 1 of the 10 NASA "Centers." Never thought of it, but good point on us having the only Center HQ located in the north.

  8. Cleveland City Council OKs $12 million rescue of Shaker Square Updated: Apr. 11, 2022, 8:15 p.m. | Published: Apr. 11, 2022, 8:12 p.m. By Courtney Astolfi, cleveland.com CLEVELAND, Ohio – Cleveland City Council Monday voted 16-0 in favor of a $12 million plan to pay off the mortgage of historic Shaker Square and avoid foreclosure of the financially troubled property. Of the $12 million financing package approved by council, all the money will come from the general fund. That’s a departure from the Shaker Square plan pitched by the former mayor last year, which called for most of the money to come from Cleveland’s share of federal aid from the American Rescue Plan Act. https://www.cleveland.com/news/2022/04/cleveland-city-council-oks-12-million-rescue-of-shaker-square.html

  12. Does anyone have any insight on how economically feasible to move buildings? General cost? Cleveland developers in recent decades doesn't appear to have been interested in saving anything by relocation. Again for example: https://www.wolfehousebuildingmovers.com/house-building-moving/
  13. Great article from Bloomberg In Cleveland, Spring Comes in Like a Slovenian Sheep Monster Cleveland’s Kurentovanje festival reflects the St. Clair-Superior neighborhood’s immigrant heritage, and its hopes for rebirth. Elizabeth Yuko February 25, 2022, 5:35 PM EST The festival is one of several efforts that aim to lure visitors and economic energy to the neighborhood, which has suffered from decades of disinvestment. Many of the storefronts lining the once-bustling retail district along St. Clair Avenue remain shuttered. But others house new businesses that have set up shop over the past decade, like the Upcycle Parts Shop and Kafela, a coffee shop/hookah bar. The Goldhorn Brewery has revived the neighborhood’s Slovenian beermaking heritage, while the Hamilton Collaborative innovation incubator has brought a series of startups, including an architectural salvage company and a community makerspace, to one of the neighborhood’s large industrial spaces. Cleveland Kurentovanje isn’t likely to rival the billion-dollar impact of New Orleans Mardi Gras when it comes to the economic boost it delivers. But it does align with the neighborhood-based approach that Destination Cleveland takes to promote the city, says Emily Lauer, the vice president of public relations at the nonprofit visitors bureau. When tourists attend events like Kurentovanje, the memories they form — and the connections they make with Clevelanders — often leave such an impression that it brings them back to the city, Lauer says. And few things are as memorable as a Kurent. “Kurentovanje is a great showcase of Cleveland’s unique and sometimes quirky personality and illustrates how strong Clevelanders’ ties are to their ethnicity,” says Lauer. “It’s an example of how Clevelanders embrace who we are and where we live — always finding ways to celebrate situations that many wouldn’t.” https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2022-02-25/time-for-cleveland-s-monster-filled-slovenian-mardi-gras
  14. So cool! I am bummed about losing that handsome brick residential structure. Too bad there isn’t a way to move it somewhere in a 2-4 block radius. There have got to be several places nearby where it could fit and be reused. When I lived in North Carolina for a short while, I remember it happening quite a bit in Raleigh saving older structures with the surge of new development. For example: https://www.wolfehousebuildingmovers.com/project/raleigh-nc-historic-house-move/ https://www.wral.com/news/local/story/3423731/?version=amp EDIT: maybe someone should call the “Wolfe House & Building Movers” and get them up here! EDIT EDIT: pretty nice recent Chicago move by them: https://www.wolfehousebuildingmovers.com/project/historic-vautravers-building-relocation/
  15. ^ 3-4K projected. Much more than what Cleveland received from Afghanistan.
  16. ^ Great article, @KJP! I think many Clevelanders underestimate the size of Case Western Reserve. It is literally the largest Private school in the state of Ohio...notably more students and (much more) staff than the next biggest....Division I...University of Dayton. These 600 more beds probably will not even be enough to cover the projected Fall 2024 demand. It'll be interesting to see how soon the next rounds of needed housing go up after these phases.

  19. These may very well be the closest dorms to the engineering quad: Case Western Reserve University to build new dorms with 600 beds for second-year students Updated: Mar. 23, 2022, 4:12 p.m. | Published: Mar. 23, 2022, 4:12 p.m. By Eric Heisig, cleveland.com CLEVELAND, Ohio — Case Western Reserve University plans to build two new dormitories with a combined 600 beds on its south campus in Cleveland’s University Circle, with plans to open them by 2024. The university plans to construct a five-story, 56,900-square-foot Murray Building on Murray Hill Road near Adelbert Road, and a six-story, 139,000-square-foot Hill Building directly to the southeast. Most of construction will be on what is now a parking lot between Fribley Commons and the area where the university’s fraternities and sororities have houses. A courtyard will be built in the middle, complete with what one slide in a presentation submitted to the city says will be a “reading and wellness garden.” https://www.cleveland.com/realestate-news/2022/03/case-western-reserve-university-to-build-new-dorms-with-600-beds-for-second-year-students.html
