Cleveland: Cleveland State University News & Info
Some more indepth info on the International School: http://www.csucauldron.com/cleveland-state-opens-k-12-school-1.1595381 Benefits for Cleveland State permeate the entire university. Almost every college or school has already sought collaboration with the International School. While many are in the formative stages, or more likely to become fruitful when the school expands in the future, some are already making an impact. While the school did not hold to specific quotas this year because of a late start, the long-term goal is to have 25 to 35 percent of enrollment come from Cleveland State parents (faculty, staff or students) and have certain percentages established for Cleveland proper.

Cleveland: Best Kept Secrets!
There are still some remnants of Italian culture remaining in Collinwood. The most visible are on Ivanhoe Rd. Last weekend, my brother and I stopped at Messina Bakery and Mirabile's Italian Restaurant and Lounge. EDIT: Another hidden gem is Baker Candies on 16131 Holmes Avenue in Collinwood. The best "whips" in the city! Also the same street as the Slovenian Home.

Hopefully we can see a rise in conferences like this...meaning Healthcare: Conference on human research trials to be held in Cleveland Published: Saturday, September 11, 2010, 9:00 AM Evelyn Theiss, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio — Human research trials can be a sensitive subject, but it's often how medical progress is made -- and sometimes the only way for patients to avail themselves of cutting-edge treatments. A daylong conference on the topic will draw 400 medical professionals to Cleveland on Thursday to discuss the finer points of working in the human-subject research arena. Cleveland's wealth of large healthcare institutions means that at any given time hundreds of medical research trials involving human subjects are being done here, says Philip Cola, vice president of research and technology at University Hospitals-Case Medical Center. http://www.cleveland.com/healthfit/index.ssf/2010/09/conference_on_human_research_t.html

Wind Turbine Scheduled to Power Up This Fall September 08, 2010 Case Western Reserve is a leader in wind power. Case Western Reserve University continues to make progress toward a multimillion-dollar wind energy research center. The first wind turbine, scheduled to be operational sometime during fall semester, will be near Veale Athletic Center and 121 Fitness Center. “Once it’s up and running, the university is going to provide energy directly into Veale Center,” said Nick Christie, project manager. The wind turbine will provide about 18.5 percent of the electricity on an annual basis. Last year, the Ohio Third Frontier Commission Wright Projects Program awarded a $3 million grant to the Case School of Engineering and the university’s Great Lakes Energy Institute. The funds, combined with contributions from Case Western Reserve and its industry partners, will comprise support for an overall $6 million Ohio Wind Energy Research and Commercialization Center (WERC) dedicated to wind turbine innovation and education. http://blog.case.edu/case-news/2010/09/08/wind_turbine_scheduled_to_power_up_this_fall

MMPI president Kennedy still behind Cleveland med mart and convention center By JAY MILLER 10:44 am, September 8, 2010 While whom he reports to may change, MMPI Inc. president Christopher Kennedy says he's still strong on Cleveland and the planned convention center and medical merchandise mart his firm is working on developing in the city's downtown. “In Cleveland, our commitment to the success of the Cleveland Medical Mart and Convention Center continues only to grow stronger,” Mr. Kennedy said in a statement e-mailed to Crain's Cleveland Business. “Tenants love it, show organizers are enthusiastic, community support is outstanding and every day strengthens our belief in the success of the project.” A report in the current issue of Crain's Chicago Business said Vornado Realty Trust, MMPI's New York-based parent, has put the showroom real estate operator on the market. In an update, Crain's Chicago yesterday reported that Vornado this summer had an offer of $1.25 billion for most of MMPI's assets. However, that offer, from Cohen Bros. Realty Corp., a New York firm that operates four home design centers, was not completed for undisclosed reasons. A groundbreaking for the trade show complex on the mall is expected before the end of the year. http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20100908/FREE/100909888

Cleveland: Rock and Roll Hall of Fame News & Discussion
Rock Hall lets Ohio Sen. George Voinovich know he rocks, renames atrium in his honor Published: Friday, September 03, 2010, 11:57 PM John Soeder, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio — George Voinovich's musical tastes run more toward polka, but that didn't stop the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum from renaming its atrium in honor of the Ohio senator. Voinovich was feted with a VIP reception Friday evening at the museum, followed by a Rock Hall Ball to celebrate the landmark institution's 15th anniversary. As mayor of Cleveland in the 1980s and governor of Ohio in the '90s, Voinovich was instrumental in getting the Rock Hall built here. Terry Stewart, president and chief executive of the hall, called Voinovich "a tenacious supporter of the museum." Sporting a Rock Hall T-shirt and denim jacket, Voinovich gave credit to his children -- George, Betsy and Peter -- for convincing him that the hall would make "a significant prize" for the city. http://www.cleveland.com/popmusic/index.ssf/2010/09/rock_hall_lets_ohio_sen_george.html

Another proposal: Local group raising funds to build Fisher House at Cleveland's University Circle for wounded veterans Published: Saturday, September 04, 2010, 8:00 AM James Ewinger, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Construction is probably a few years off, but a local group pledged Friday that the region will have a Fisher House -- lodging for the families of wounded warriors being treated at the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center. The goal is a 20-suite home with a communal sitting and dining areas. A tentative site has already been identified at East 105th Street and Wade Park Avenue, adjacent to the VA hospital in University Circle. "A Fisher House in Cleveland has no opposition," said Tom Sweeney, a Vietnam veteran and former TV newsman here who chairs the local task force. The objective is to raise $3 million, he said. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2010/09/a_foundation_of_support_for_wo.html
