So much for the Cleveland Immigration Center... Cleveland school district agrees to lease vacant Jewish Federation building downtown Published: Sunday, August 29, 2010, 11:15 AM Thomas Ott, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Jewish Federation of Cleveland's former downtown headquarters won't be turned into a welcome center for immigrants, but the group's leaders have found another civic purpose for the PlayhouseSquare complex. The federation, which moved its offices to Beachwood in July, is set to lease the space to the Cleveland School District, which will turn it into classrooms for juniors and seniors from MC2STEM High School. The school board approved the lease Tuesday; the federation's board will vote this week. The district will pay no rent for the first 10 years of the lease, which includes annual options to renew for 10 more years, but it must pick up operating expenses. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2010/08/cleveland_school_district_agre.html

NorTech pushing for advanced-energy industry growth in Northeast Ohio Published: Saturday, August 28, 2010, 6:00 PM Tom Breckenridge, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Tucked into an industrial park that flanks Interstate 271 is a slice of the region's advanced-energy future. Slurries of green water, replete with algae, bubble and loop inside 40-foot-long troughs, readying for a high-tech process that will yield oil -- the kind that can be converted to bio-diesel or jet fuel. Time, and millions of dollars in state and federal grants, will tell whether Phycal LLC, a Highland Heights-based startup, can scale its biofuel production enough to become a viable advanced-energy company. But Phycal's growth, to 40 employees since 2007, puts it among scores of local companies and institutions that technology leaders say can band together and bite off chunks of the burgeoning market in advanced energy. http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2010/08/nortech_pushing_for_advanced-energy_industry_growth_in_northeast_ohio.html

A few more good articles on the new director: http://www.ottawacitizen.com/entertainment/tough+face+replace+National+Gallery/3453337/story.html "It just struck me as a place where I could learn a lot, but also be part of something that's pretty unique," Franklin said Friday, in a telephone interview from Cleveland. "I really think this museum is going to be the focal point of American museums in the next couple of years, because of this ambitious ... $350-million campaign." http://www.clevelandleader.com/node/14443 “I have long admired the Cleveland Museum of Art’s commitment to quality, which has given the institution a reputation for possessing among the world’s finest encyclopedic holdings,” said Franklin. “It is with great enthusiasm that I join the talented Cleveland staff in leading this museum into its next 100 years. I want to build upon the museum’s strong traditions while increasing its focus on outreach and diversity to identify new ways to bring the collection to life and engage the regional and global audiences that the museum serves.” Interview: http://www.cleveland.com/arts/index.ssf/2010/08/david_franklin_speaks_on_being.html

It sounds like Cleveland snagged a quality director on this one: David Franklin of the National Gallery of Canada named director of the Cleveland Museum of Art Published: Friday, August 27, 2010, 7:50 AM Steven Litt, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Cleveland Museum of Art is hoisting the red maple leaf on its flagpole, figuratively speaking. The museum's trustees voted unanimously Thursday to appoint Montreal native David Franklin, deputy director and chief curator of the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, as the Cleveland museum's new director. He will be the CMA's eighth director since the museum opened in 1916. Franklin, 49, is a respected scholar and curator with strong international connections among dealers, collectors and museums, which he hopes to translate into high-impact art acquisitions and exhibitions in Cleveland. "I'm committed to moving my family to Cleveland and putting down roots," Franklin said. He declined to describe the terms of his contract, but said, "I'm certainly intending to stay a very long time. That would be my dream." http://www.cleveland.com/arts/index.ssf/2010/08/david_franklin_of_the_national.html

Cleveland Orchestra performance in Switzerland a chance for Team NEO to conduct business Published: Thursday, August 26, 2010, 5:00 PM Tom Breckenridge, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Cleveland Orchestra attracts music lovers. Local business leaders hope it can draw some international business to Northeast Ohio. The orchestra and Team NEO, the region's business-attraction group, will host 20 European business executives on Saturday for a performance in Lucerne, Switzerland. The 20 represent companies and industry associations across Europe, mostly manufacturing with a mix of solar power and biomedical interests. The orchestra is on a two-week tour of summer music festivals in Europe. Team NEO is on a two-year quest to attract international investment to the region, launched with a $1 million grant from the Cleveland Foundation. The goal over two years is to land three or four deals with companies that commit to a minimum $1 million investment here and would generate at least 20 jobs over three years, Team NEO officials said. http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2010/08/cleveland_orchestra_performance_in_switzerland_a_chance_for_team_neo_to_conduct_business.html

Asiantown info please
Frist of all, Welcome Back! I don't know much about the living area other than it is extremely affordable. You'd have Dave's grocery store and the Asian Markets walking distance as well. Also, I seem to remember the area you're describing as having the lowest crime rate in the city of Cleveland BTW E.55th is probably a good border to stay west of (plus you'd be out of Asiatown anyways), although I did have a friend from Albania who grew up on E.55th and St. Clair, and he never really had too many problems. If you don't want to walk to Euclid Ave, other bus routes to be aware of: #1 -- St. Clair #2 -- E.55th #3 -- Superior

Cleveland: Cleveland State University News & Info
I've always thought CWRU Field would make a great temporary solution. It currently holds about 2500 people, but could hold 4000-5000 if additional bleachers were engineered correctly (hold a competition between CWRU and CSU engineers to make it work!) The walls of the stadium are brick student dorms if you've never seen it before....very cool. Plus, they could have some "double header" type Saturday games. CWRU vs .... @ 1 pm. CSU vs... @ 8 pm. Although it may become over-crowded (hopefully!) rather quickly, it would produce a quick, easy, and cheap fix to the problem, and create a unique and intimate setting for both schools. Not to mention, it would be VERY urban...

Cleveland & Akron Inter-City Relations
As a Clevelander eastsider, I know people who struggle with geography of the Westside suburbs, let alone Akron. Clevelanders are generally east-west oriented, and don't necessarily think south. Two examples: My friend my from Little Italy: "Seven Hills? I dunno, I never go to the Westside unless Edgewater Park or something." (Seven Hills is south of Cleveland on the way to Akron) My friend from Cleveland Hts: "I not sure if I could ever live on the Westside. I mean, it's OK to visit Tremont and Ohio City, but living there..." (that's the Westside for most eastside Clevelanders..) The easiest answer for most life-long Clevelanders -- they are simply indifferent about Akron/Canton, and associate it as NEO.
