  1. Mid-American Conference basketball tournaments to stay in Cleveland By JOEL HAMMOND 3:11 pm, August 11, 2010 The Mid-American Conference has announced an extension of its contract with Quicken Loans Arena and will hold its men's and women's basketball tournaments at The Q through 2017. “The Mid-American Conference is extremely pleased to extend our partnership with Quicken Loans Arena and the Cleveland Cavaliers for our FirstEnergy Men's and Women's Basketball Conference Tournament," MAC commissioner Jon Steinbrecher said in a statement. "This partnership provides our student-athletes and our fans the finest basketball facility in the country for our conference basketball tournament.” On the men's side, this past March's tournament was the first time since 2006 that every team did not play in Cleveland; from 2007-2009, all games were held at the arena. Last year, the conference returned to its previous format, in which the top four teams received first-round byes and teams seeded fifth through eighth played first-round tournament games on their respective campuses. That format will continue. http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20100811/FREE/100819961

MLB Attendance Watch: Tough Times In Toronto And Cleveland by Jim McLennan • Aug 10, 2010 5:01 PM EDT A couple of weeks into the baseball season, I wrote a piece on early attendance trends, which at that point indicated a loss of about 700,000 fans on the season. Turns out that was an under-estimate. With the better part of two months left to go, numbers are already down by almost that much, compared to 2009 - projected forward for the rest of the season, another million fans will be lost from the ballpark in 2010. What's more disturbing is that this comes on the heels of the five million decrease from 2008 to 2009. Obviously, the economy plays a factor, but it's the first time there have been consecutive drops of more than a million since 1950-52. over which time the annual crowds dropped from 17.2 to 14 million. As before, however, the overall number conceals a wide variation among teams. Some of that is to be expected - the Mets got the "new field boost" last season. But the Indians have simply been hemorrhaging fans over the past few seasons. The per-game number is more than ten thousand down on when they went to the playoffs in 2007, and is on pace to be the lowest for Cleveland since 1992, before they moved into Jacobs/Progressive Field. The Blue Jays are worse off still - the last time they averaged less than twenty thousand per game was 1982. http://www.sbnation.com/2010/8/10/1616203/baseball-attendance-toronto-cleveland

  8. Before we start bashing the PD completely, let's see who the author is of the article -- Tom Breckenridge. I normally remember him being generally more Pro-Cleveland than not...so maybe this article a little out of character for him/being blown out of proportion. Don't get me wrong Oldmanladyluck, I agree with you. As for not reporting on Cleveland events (i.e. Warehouse District Festival), I feel I am the most bothered on almost a weekly basis, since I spend time keeping track of all the events going on around the city. http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,22979.0.html I did email the link to numerous PD writers last month, and noticed a spike in coverage about mid-july for many of the events I listed; however, it has dropped off since. Now, you want to talk about just the Warehouse District Festival? Check this out -- these were the major events from this past weekend: Aug 6-8: Cleveland Indians vs Minnesota Twins Aug 6-8: Puerto Rican Parade and Festival (Muny Lot) http://www.juliadeburgos.org/festparade.html Aug 7: Dragon Boat Festival http://clevelanddragonboatfestival.com/ Aug 7: Family Fishing Derby (Rockefeller Lagoon) http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2010/07/family_fishing_derby_slated_fo.html Aug 7: Lakewood Arts Festival http://lakewoodartsfest.org/ Aug 7: Cleveland Browns "Brown and White Scrimmage" FAMILY DAY (Cleveland Browns Stadium) Cleveland Browns Family Day Aug 7-8: Cleveland Triathlon http://www.pacificsportsllc.com/storage/2010%20Cleveland%20Tri%20Schedule%20of%20Events.pd f Aug 8: Historic Warehouse District Street Festival http://www.warehousedistrict.org/events/events/default.asp Aug 8: Cedar-Fairmount Arts Festival (Cleveland Hts) http://www.cedarfairmount.org/specialevents/wp-content/uploads/2006/04/2010-Postcard-forweb-11.jpg Aug 8: Puerto Rican Parade How many of these got coverage from the PD? I'd say maybe 4...Browns, Indians, Cleveland Triathlon, and Puerto Rican Festival. That's what I see every week as I do the UO events page.

  13. Harvey Pekar music benefit set for Saturday night at Cleveland's Beachland Ballroom Published: Saturday, August 07, 2010, 6:00 AM Michael Heaton, The Plain Dealer Harvey Pekar left a legacy of life, courage and uncompromising art when he was found dead in his Cleveland Heights home July 12. He also left a history of money worries and confused finances, and no will or burial plans, for Joyce Brabner, his writing partner and wife of 27 years. So friends will hold a memorial event Saturday at 8 p.m. at the Beachland Ballroom in Collinwood to cover costs of his interment. Performers include David Thomas of Pere Ubu with Paul Marotta of the Styrenes, Yiddishe Cup, Cats on Holiday, Charlie Mosbrook, George Foley & Gene Epstein and Home & Garden. Tickets are $10. "Things are complicated in the aftermath of our friend Harvey's life," said Beachland co-owner Cindy Barber, who published Pekar's work when she was editor of the old Free Times weekly. Brabner said her husband was cremated privately, and that his remains will be buried in Lakeview Cemetery, near those of Eliot Ness. Neither woman would disclose a financial goal for the benefit, but Barber said they hope to at least cover the cost of the cemetery plot and possibly a memorial statue. http://www.cleveland.com/living/index.ssf/2010/08/beachland_ballroom_music_benef.html

  25. University Hospitals receives $35 million gift for cancer research and treatment Published: Friday, August 06, 2010, 4:00 AM Angela Townsend, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio — The estate of Dr. Donald J. Goodman and Ruth Weber Goodman has paved the way toward distinguishing the new Cancer Hospital at University Hospitals Case Medical Center from other cancer hospitals in the country. In honor of the estate's $35 million gift, the largest single donation in UH's 143-year history, the couple will have 3,700 square feet of space for clinical cancer research and treatment, and the floor on which The Goodman family became forever linked to UH in 2000 after oncologists at the Ireland Cancer Center successfully treated Dr. Goodman with an experimental drug for acute myelogenous leukemia. In 2004, the Pepper Pike couple -- both inaugural members of UH's National Cancer Leadership Council -- made arrangements to include UH in their estate plan, setting the stage for the gift. http://www.cleveland.com/healthfit/index.ssf/2010/08/university_hospitals_receives.html
