Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
I'm am sick to my stomach with some of John Kasich's quotes... "I don't support a 39 mph train, OK? It's not going to happen if I'm governor, OK?" Kasich said to reporters gathered for the occasion, according to published reports. "If you want the train, I hope you can get over that and vote for me anyway. But you're not going to get that train." http://www.examiner.com/x-23537-Columbus-Government-Examiner~y2010m8d5-Ohio-3C-passenger-rail-plan-creates-sharp-divide-between-Strickland-Kasich

Cleveland: Innerbelt News
Cleveland: Residents, businesses asked for online input on new I-90 Innerbelt Bridge Kim Wendel Updated: 8/5/2010 3:55:32 PM CLEVELAND -- ODOT wants to hear from Cleveland-area residents and business owners on which of the three conceptual drawings for the new I-90 Innerbelt Bridge they prefer. Starting Friday afternoon, the drawings will be posted at www.Innerbelt.org and ODOT asks for comments no later than noon Aug. 15. This comes after months of engineering and design work, as the three teams competing to build Cleveland's new Interstate 90 Innerbelt Bridge have delivered their detailed plans and proposals to the Ohio Department of Transportation. ODOT wants to hear from citizens and businesses in Northeast Ohio regarding the look of the new structure. Engineers and technical experts from ODOT and the City of Cleveland have begun a thorough process of evaluating each of the three technical proposals for constructing the new westbound bridge -- estimated at $450 million -- making it ODOT's largest single-project investment in state history. http://www.wkyc.com/news/local/news_article.aspx?storyid=142882&catid=3

Cleveland: Hotels, Conventions, and Tourism News & Info
Isn't the CC proposing a new hotel too? From Crains: Cleveland: A hotel hotbed? By STAN BULLARD 4:30 am, August 5, 2010 Proposals for new hotels are cropping up in downtown Cleveland and nearby University Circle at a ferocious rate. That would be the order of the day in a normal time, when a new convention center and casinos go in — though in Cleveland, the new convention center is cast as a medical merchandise mart and Ohio voters approved plans for just one casino each in Cleveland and two other cities. However, these are not normal times. Hotels are suffering in the recession. The hotels developers are building or proposing in or near downtown also are in the 100-room range rather than the single 500- to 1,000-room hotel the city might need if both the convention center and casino prove wildly successful — at some point in the distant future. However, local hospitality experts and hotel operators are not working up a sweat over the six hotel proposals that have surfaced so far, in part because these are not normal times for realty development plans. http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20100805/SUB1/308059997

Where are Historic Markers needed in Ohio?
^That's a great idea...some sort of bus tour would be great. Maybe even a Lolly the Trolley type specialty tour. I would hate to see Ohioians forget their past and some of it not be saved.

Where are Historic Markers needed in Ohio?
Maybe I'm mistaken then.... But I do know that Record Rendezvous was located in the building that is currently at the address 310 Prospect Ave. http://www.clevelandmagazine.com/ME2/dirmod.asp?sid=586CA122EB394032BD4AA3B686FF03D9&nm=Editorial&type=Publishing&mod=Publications%3A%3AArticle&mid=1578600D80804596A222593669321019&tier=4&id=0461B3B892014EF88B808F5DE2212067

Where are Historic Markers needed in Ohio?
96 years ago TODAY, Cleveland installed the world's first electic traffic signal at the intersection of E. 105th and Euclid Ave. http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/us-census-bureau-daily-feature-for-august-5-99999844.html http://wikimapia.org/8930744/Location-of-first-traffic-signal-1914 To my knowledge, there is absolutely NO MARKER at this site. Also in Cleveland, the building were Alan Freed coined the turn "Rock and Roll" has no marker and is even in danger of being demolished. So, this got me thinking -- Where else in Ohio is our history in danger of being lost or forgotten? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FYI -- Here is Ohio's current listing for Historic Markers, in order of county name: http://www.hmdb.org/Results.asp?State=Ohio

Cleveland: Wind Turbine Construction News
More talk on the Lake Erie Wind Turbines...thte goal is still 5 turbines by 2012: Installing wind turbines on Lake Erie could generate thousands of jobs, study says Published: Thursday, August 05, 2010, 6:00 AM Tom Breckenridge, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Creating an industry to build and maintain hundreds of power-generating turbines on Lake Erie by 2030 would support up to 8,000 jobs and cost $31 billion, an economic-impact study says. An existing supply of manufacturers for land-based turbines makes the region and Ohio a plausible fit for the risky offshore industry, says the analysis commissioned by NorTech, which supports local high-tech development. A local nonprofit development company known as LEEDCo proposes the five-turbine, 20-megawatt test project off the Cleveland shore. Wind power advocates believe it could spur a 5,000-megawatt array from Lorain to Ashtabula. That would generate up to 8,000 jobs, $7.8 billion in wages and $587 million in state and local tax revenues over 20 years, the analysis said. http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2010/08/wind_power_1.html

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
I wonder if this is true... NBA Schedules Don't Give LeBron James a Primetime Cleveland Showdown Despite a searing rumour, and it being one of the most anticipated games in NBA history, schedule makers decided yesterday that they will not give LeBron James and the Heat a primetime spot against Cleveland in the upcoming schedule. NBA Commissioner David Stern recently acknowledged the legitimacy of the powerhouse teaming-up in Miami, saying that players have the right to choose what they will during free agency. But now his actions imply that he doesn’t want to show the world James beating up on his former team, despite the massive audiences this would obviously command. No, that kind of a meeting might just ring a bit hostile and unnecessary for a league still concerned with gentlemanly propriety and respect. While it seems like a faltering business move on the face of it, it is one the NBA is right to make. After all, we’re not talking about professional wrestling here, but the integrity of a sports institution. http://blogs.bettor.com/NBA-Schedules-Dont-Give-LeBron-James-a-Primetime-Cleveland-Showdown-a20173

Cleveland: TV / Film Industry News
From Crains: A production crew and a famous chef were in town last week to film Cleveland and its tourism attractions for an upcoming show that is to air by the end of this year on PBS called “Great Chefs: Destinations!” “It's like Anthony Bourdain,'s ‘No Reservations' meets Samantha Brown on the Travel Channel and Guy (Fieri,'s) Diners Drive-Ins and Dives,” said Mike Kirk, producer of South Carolina-based Gilded Age Films, which is producing the show. Cleveland is the ninth city to be featured on the program that films 26 cities — including seven in Europe and South America. In addition to a city tour via Segway, the production crew also visited the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, the Cleveland Botanical Garden, Great Lakes Brewing Co., Big Fun Toy Store, in Coventry and Little Italy. http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20100802/BLOGS02/100809975

Cleveland: Port Authority News & Info
Very interesting news... Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority sets $3.2 million plan for rail loop on lakefront docks By JAY MILLER 1:21 pm, August 3, 2010 New Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority CEO William Friedman today told Port Authority board members of a $3.16 million plan to create a new rail loop on the lakefront docks. The loop would make the transfer from ships to rail easier and attract a new customer interested in importing steel through the Port of Cleveland. Mr. Friedman would not disclose the name of the importer, but said it would shift business from an East Coast port. It also would require the Cleveland port to be able to accommodate as many as 70 rail cars at a time to handle the unloading and shipment of steel to inland destinations. http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20100803/FREE/100809954

Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail
Towpath Trail builders add 2 properties along Cuyahoga River, but still need more Published: Monday, August 02, 2010, 6:40 PM Pat Galbincea, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Towpath Trail planners aren't done purchasing property in The Flats. Tim Donovan, director of the Ohio Canal Corridor, said Monday that his group is eyeing other parcels that could complete the 101-mile trail from Lake Erie south to Dover-New Philadelphia following the route of the Ohio & Erie Canal. Last Friday, the Ohio Canal Corridor and Trust for Public Land announced the purchase of 11 acres -- two adjacent properties along the Cuyahoga River -- for $4.8 million. That acquisition accommodates nearly a half-mile of trail and will connect to the proposed Canal Basin Park, a 20-acre park at the site where the Ohio & Erie Canal once tied into the Cuyahoga River. The Towpath Trail now ends at Harvard Avenue in Cleveland. Completing the last six miles of the trail north into downtown Cleveland and to Lake Erie has been difficult because of acquiring the land and dealing with obstacles like railroad tracks and the questionable safety of the old Harshaw Chemical Co. grounds, where the company processed uranium, radium and other toxic material for atomic bombs during World War II and into the 1950s. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2010/08/post_334.html

Startup company's speedier process for making whiskey could lift Cleveland's spirits Published: Wednesday, July 21, 2010, 8:04 PM Tom Breckenridge, The Plain Dealer The veteran marketing executive and one-time hooch maker wants to lift your spirits, Cleveland, by producing whiskey here and selling it worldwide. His startup company, Cleveland Whiskey LLC, has a federal permit to test his innovation for making whiskey faster, a $25,000 grant and space in a new-business incubator near downtown Cleveland. Cleveland has assets for his venture, including abundant freshwater, affordable real estate and a strong entrepreneurial support network, Lix said.
