Not only did the top-seeded Spartans defeat the University of Chicago, 5-1, to earn their first ITA Indoors title, they also made SportsCenter's Top 10 plays thanks to a sensational volley winner from freshman standout James Hopper. Record-setting Case Western Reserve team still has tests to pass – Terry Pluto Updated: Mar. 03, 2022, 8:47 p.m. | Published: Mar. 03, 2022, 5:46 a.m. CLEVELAND, Ohio – The best mens basketball team in the history of Case Western Reserve University is making the 518-mile bus trip to Oshkosh, Wisconsin, in its own way. The reason CWRU is in the road to Oshkosh is the Spartans made the Division III NCAA tournament for the first time in school history. The 18 victories also are a school record. In their final practice at CWRU before getting on the bus, Cole Frilling was 45 minutes late. Not his fault. The 17-point scorer (7.0 rebounds) had a lab for his aerospace major. “That happens a lot,” said McGuinness. “Guys have labs, or a course that they can only take at a certain time. You make allowances.
