Cleveland: Downtown Cleveland Alliance News & Discussion
Some more help for Downtown: Cleveland council renews fees on downtown businesses for safety, street-cleaning and development programs Published: Thursday, July 15, 2010, 11:50 AM Michelle Jarboe, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Property owners in downtown Cleveland will pay five more years of assessments to support street-cleaning crews, safety escorts and business-development programs. Cleveland City Council voted Wednesday on the final piece of legislation to reauthorize a special improvement district, which covers properties between West 10th and East 18th streets and Front and Carnegie avenues. Property owners in the district collectively pay more than $3 million a year to support clean-and-safe programs and marketing efforts. The district was created in 2005 and was set to expire this year. The reauthorization covers 2011 through 2015. A renewal required approval from property owners representing at least 60 percent of the district. The effort garnered 66 percent support before the Downtown Cleveland Alliance, the nonprofit group that manages the district and represents property owners, asked the city to sign off. "The reauthorization really represents an $18.8 million commitment over five years on the part of property owners," said Joe Marinucci, the alliance's president and chief executive officer. "Given the economic challenges of the last two years, I think that's just a great affirmation of the property owners' commitment to downtown and commitment to Cleveland." http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2010/07/cleveland_council_renews_fees_on_downtown_businesses_for_safety_street-cleaning_and_development_programs.html

Cleveland: Case Western Reserve University News & Info
Looks like University Circle may get a new Skyline addition... Case Western Reserve University wants to erect a wind turbine on its campus Published: Thursday, July 15, 2010, 11:45 AM Tom Breckenridge, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Case Western Reserve University won't just research renewable energy. It wants to use it. The university won approval this morning from a city design-review committee to erect a wind turbine on its southern campus and to install solar panels on a nearby gym. The turbine would go up west of Adelbert Road, near athletic fields that front Veale Center, university officials said. It would stand 156 feet tall, from ground level to the top of the rotating blades, said Margaret Carney, the university's lead architect and planner. The turbine will help power Veale Center, officials said. The cost of the $600,000 turbine project will be covered by some $3 million the university received last year from Ohio's Third Frontier, a taxpayer-funded program that promotes high-tech development in the state, officials said. http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2010/07/post_57.html

I dunno....If retail arrives right next door (E.9-E.12) there is nothing bad about having something that draws people from all over the country in our storefronts. I mean, how could we possibly fill ALL of them anyways within the next 5+ years? I personally love the use of E.4th street with the BODIES exhibit, and would much rather it be a showroom/moving event storefront year-round (meaning other exhibts besides the current one). It adds another draw and dynamic to our Downtown area, and gives another reason for people to come Downtown and to Cleveland.

Cleveland: 2012 Democratic National Convention?
St. Louis is actually doing pretty well, and it's one of the top 5 most Democratic cities in the country. While its rebound may have slowed down in the economic downturn, it's still getting better and better with each passing day. Greetings from Cleveland, by the way! It's always great to be here! Welcome Jivecity! If you have any questions/need any recommendations...let us know.

Interesting video: Focus: 'Furniture Fair' is preview of 'Design District' Jeff Maynor Updated: 7/14/2010 7:34:25 PM CLEVELAND -- You don't see many Amish people at the glitzy theatrical productions at Playhouse Square. Catching a Broadway show doesn't exactly fit their simple way of life. But this week you will see Amish visitors around Playhouse Square. Amish furniture makers from Holmes County have come to the city for Cleveland's Furniture Fair. "Until a few years ago, our products sold themselves," said Roy Miller, of Country View Woodworking. "Then things turned down. We hadn't had to market our products before, so we never learned how." http://www.wkyc.com/news/local/news_article.aspx?storyid=139907&catid=3

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
^^yes. basically saying there is a big difference with how Z left and how Lebron dragged us through the mud, ignored Dan Gilbert, and slapped Cleveland in the face on National television. That fans are wishing Z good luck and that most believe Z deserves a title more than anyone. But I did note that he was knocking Gilbert, not the city of Cleveland and its fans. Anthor interesting twist/story: Cleveland Cavs Fans Offering Financial Support to Owner Dan Gilbert A team spokesman told the wire service that Gilbert has received thousands of e-mails and phone calls, in support of his decision to write it. Beyond written praise, several of those cheerful correspondences even offered to lend a few dollars from their wallets to help Gilbert pay the six-figure fine issued by NBA commissioner David Stern on Monday. Gilbert responded with a, dare we say, nicer tone to his base of supporters. He plans to direct any contributions to a cause better than his slap-on-the-wrist: the Cavaliers Youth Fund. “The humbling offer by so many is another reflection of the strength of Cavs fans and the people who live and work in this region and are always the first to step up and have each other's back,” Gilbert said in a statement. “I will pay this fine myself, but would be grateful and highly appreciative for any fan who redirects the dollars they kindly offered to contribute towards this fine to the Cavaliers Youth Fund, which will positively impact our region's kids through the numerous local charitable groups the Cavaliers Youth Fund supports.” http://newsfeed.time.com/2010/07/14/cleveland-cavs-fans-offering-financial-support-to-owner-dan-gilbert/ And this one...! Cleveland Fans Sending Old LeBron Gear to Homeless Shelters in Miami By Kyle Munzenrieder, Wed., Jul. 14 2010 @ 12:14PM Cleveland continues to be the whiniest city in all of American sports, but at least their latest drama queen moment over losing LeBron James has good intentions. A fan-created website and a Northern Ohio restaurant chain will be collecting fans' old LeBron t-shirts ...and sending them to homeless shelters in Miami. http://blogs.miaminewtimes.com/riptide/2010/07/cleveland_fans_sending_old_leb.php

Ironically, Crop was my favorite downtown dining spot too. For lunch, my favs are still Pickwick and Frolic $5 "monday's suck" lunch specials, market cafe and wine bar on E.9th http://www.themarketcafeandwinebar.com/, even Saigon. For quick, I love the Arcade -- Crepe, and Presto. Also Vincenza's Pizza in the Colonial Arcade. I still need to try that rooftop place in the Huntington Building...

I really like this man, President Berkman...: Keeping grads in city a top priority for Cleveland State University president Published: Wednesday, July 14, 2010, 8:50 AM Everdeen Mason, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- One year after becoming president of Cleveland State University, Ronald Berkman has begun to make his mark at the school. Berkman told a luncheon gathering Tuesday that in a year from now, 20 CSU students will begin medical school in a collaboration with Northeastern Ohio Universities Colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy. It is part of his initiative to create opportunities for CSU students and hopefully keep many of them in town after graduation. He said most graduates would like to stay, but do not think they have career opportunities. He outlined several other projects he thinks will allow students to learn while bettering the community: - Get more students to live on campus. - Join with the Cleveland schools on a teaching opportunity that will challenge both the CSU and Cleveland students. - Create more visibility for CSU's nursing program. Berkman believes if more students live on campus, they will be exposed to the community's cultural benefits. The community will benefit from the diversity the students provide. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2010/07/keeping_grads_in_city_top_prio.html

Word is they are moving into the old bank building caddy-corner from the Westside Market. Also, Johnny's owns the building Crop is currently in, so I wouldn't be too worried about what will be going there in the future, meaning, they would never allow a loud music-blarring club.

Cleveland: Leveraging Citywide LED Contract for Economic Development
Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson closes in on getting approval for his LED lights legislation Published: Wednesday, July 14, 2010, 8:00 AM Mark Gillispie CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Barring any 11th-hour drama, Mayor Frank Jackson will likely get permission today from City Council to find a company willing to sell the city LED lights in exchange for building a manufacturing and research facility here. Jackson has the votes, although the exact number is unclear. If at least 13 of council's 19 members give their approval this evening, the legislation will be formally adopted as an "emergency" measure. If there are only 12 "yes" votes, which means he lacks a super majority, he will have to wait until council's Aug. 18 meeting for the ordinance to be approved on a third and final reading. Council's summer recess has given members a chance to gather testimony about the pending legislation. Members have heard from a government lighting expert who cast doubt about the city's approach; a market analyst who thinks the best chance of building a cluster of LED-related businesses is to include GE in the mix; and a Case Western Reserve University economics professor who said she was intrigued by the concept of tying purchasing to economic development. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2010/07/cleveland_mayor_frank_jackson_16.html

Another nice article on "Zinc:" Zinc Bistro could prove precious metal in Cleveland's Euclid corridor Published: Wednesday, July 14, 2010, 7:00 AM Joe Crea, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Restaurant openings in downtown Cleveland are a lot like spring flowers in bloom: showy, hopeful, even beautiful signs of life's renewal. While sipping one of the French or New Orleans-inspired classic or signature cocktails on Zinc's menu, downtown Cleveland feels like the urban mecca it ought to be. Best of all, at least from an urban planning perspective, the beauty of Zinc's opening is its potential for drawing East Fourth Street diners around the corner and out onto Euclid Avenue. Peppering Euclid with cool destinations like this one would not only enliven the neighborhood but lend greater vitality to the corridor. http://www.cleveland.com/taste/index.ssf/2010/07/zinc_bistro_bar_could_prove_pr.html
