MOCA Cleveland board votes to unveil Farshid Moussavi design for new building Thursday Published: Tuesday, July 13, 2010, 5:36 PM Steven Litt, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland took decisive steps Tuesday toward realizing its long-held dream of building an architecturally dramatic new home in University Circle. Twenty members of the museum's board voted unanimously to break ground in December, pending completion of a campaign to raise $26.5 million for construction by the end of October. The board also voted to unveil its closely held architectural plans Thursday morning at a meeting of the Euclid Corridor Design Review Committee. "It's a pivotal moment for us," said MOCA Director Jill Snyder. "All cities need and deserve a contemporary art museum. I think especially for Cleveland, we become a beacon and a symbol of creativity and innovation, and even risk." The building's design architect, Farshid Moussavi of Foreign Office Architects in London, is scheduled to speak Thursday at the design review meeting, which begins at 8 a.m. at East Mt. Zion Church, 9990 Euclid Ave., and is open to the public. She's also to speak Friday at the meeting of the city's Planning Commission. http://blog.cleveland.com/architecture/2010/07/moca_cleveland_board_votes_to.html

  3. Such an awesome and deep shout-out to Cleveland and tribute to Harvey. His comments section is blowing up. Keep them going UOers!
  4. WHOA....must MUST BUY item for all urbanohioers: http://www.smithmag.net/pekarproject/2010/04/09/announcing-harvey-pekars-cleveland/
  5. I second that...Corbo's Tiramisu is amazing as well as their Cleveland-famous Sicialian Cassata Cake http://www.foodgoat.com/2007/10/who-else-like-corbos-cassata-cake.html And you'll find restaurants using Presti's bread as far away as La Strada on E.4th. (Their spinach break is AMAZING btw)
  6. Nothing wrong with Trattoria at all, although I would personally choose a few other places before it. For me, I would only order pasta if I was eating dinner there, where other places I would generally get veal, seafood, etc. I'm just saying that Enta is considered the most authentic Italian restaurant on the street...and if you like seafood, it has some of the best on the eastside.

    that would be hilarious...
  8. In the rendering it looks like thats what they did... You're right, I didn't even notice the garage addtion in the picture. From this tiny, tiny angle, it doesn't look too bad...
  9. The garage will be immediately behind the building, bracketed by Rockwell and Theresa Ct.
  10. Big news of the day! Calabrese is a stud for making this and Schofield happen. Law firm Calfee to move Cleveland headquarters, 300-plus employees to former WKYC building Published: Tuesday, July 13, 2010, 2:11 PM Michelle Jarboe, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A Cleveland law firm will move more than 300 employees into the vacant East Ohio Gas Co. building on East Sixth Street. Calfee, Halter & Griswold LLP has signed a 20-year lease on the long-vacant historic building. The firm's move, scheduled for late 2011, will support a $30 million redevelopment of the property, originally the headquarters of the East Ohio Gas Co. and most recently home to WKYC Channel 3. http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2010/07/law_firm_calfee_to_move_clevel.html

    Is Delonte gone for sure?
  15. Sounds like they need some help... I hope it works out for them because Downtown needs a place like this.
  16. I'm not the person to do this, and I wish I were, but it may be time to create a Harvey Pekar "American Splendor" Museum in Cleveland Hts. Coventry and Lee Rd come to mind as the two best places. And I say a new Great Lakes Beer while we're at it!! "Harvey Pekar" Here's him talking about moving to Coventry
  17. It's not very exciting... http://www.clevelandcliniclabs.com/AboutUs/NewReferenceLaboratory/tabid/4226/Default.aspx But this should probably be discussed in the Cleveland Clinic thread
  18. ^^Is anyone planning on going to this?

  21. Downtown furniture fair tests Cleveland's plan to create a District of Design Published: Monday, July 12, 2010, 8:57 PM Tom Breckenridge, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A grand plan to establish a stretch of Euclid Avenue downtown as a hub of product design edges into the spotlight Wednesday and Thursday with a furniture fair. The Cleveland Furniture and Millwork Fair 1.0 features seminars aimed at helping local craftsmen, especially the Amish, build their business and design capacity. The fair culminates more than three years of pitching by Edward "Ned" Hill of Cleveland State University and Daniel Cuffaro of the Cleveland Institute of Art, who believe the region's strength in consumer product design can be leveraged to make Cleveland the "Milan of the Midwest." Their vision includes product showrooms and design studios near PlayhouseSquare. Regional and national buyers would travel here to see cutting-edge product design during the day and enjoy downtown restaurants and entertainment at night. Now, Hill, Cuffaro and supporters that include the Downtown Cleveland Alliance, the city of Cleveland and PlayhouseSquare hope to build momentum again, based on prospective tenants who haven't lost interest -- Amish furniture makers. http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2010/07/downtown_furniture_fair_tests.html
  22. I guess what I'm saying is that I would consider the Flats more part of Downtown Cleveland than Cleveland State...although, by 2011, that area will probably have about 5,500+ residents... I'll stop, CSU gives a good chunk to Downtown Cleveland numbers.
  23. What's wrong with the West Bank of the Flats in Cleveland? I feel it's just as apart of Downtown as CSU.
  24. Cleveland's will be interesting with the creations of E.4th Street, 668 Euclid Ave, CSU Collegetown, and the new condos/townhomes.
  25. Neat article from the Washington Post: http://voices.washingtonpost.com/comic-riffs/2010/07/harvey_pekars_book_editor_reme.html Harvey's brains and willpower let him rise from his blue-collar beginnings, and eventually overcome his psychological fears to become a true part of American culture. I would think that he's the only Social Security file clerk to also be a jazz critic, book reviewer for the Washington Post, and comic book writer and have a major motion picture made about his life. I was in Cleveland on business a couple of springs ago, and Harvey came by my hotel to show me his Cleveland. As I noted on my blog at the time, he took me to an early dinner in his town, Cleveland Heights. After asking me if I liked milkshakes, he took me to Tommy's Restaurant (1824 Coventry Rd, Cleveland Heights, OH 44118, for those planning a trip) where he was greeted by name. We were parked in a booth and talked comics, food and mutual acquaintances for a while. ... Harvey had a grilled cheese, which I report for the sake of history. We talked a little bit about his appearance on Tony Bourdain's TV show, "No Reservations," and in spite of Harvey's reputation as a TV disdainer (apropos of his Letterman appearances), he's got a real liking for Bourdain, who's another self-made man like Harvey is.
