  5. Extra partols for Downtown tonight  * ESPN: LeBron Show May Cause 'Violence' In Ohio. With ESPN handing over an hour of airtime to LeBron James tonight, ESPN's Shelley Smith reported on the same network this afternoon that in advance of the James-ESPN production "fear has given way to a rising anger" among Clevelanders and "there could be violence tonight" throughout the city. Smith added that Cleveland police have bolstered downtown patrols in anticipation of any violence that could erupt in response to events playing out on the James-ESPN show. http://outofbounds.nbcsports.com/2010/07/thursday-blogdome-14.html.php

  9. ^^That's going to be a neat addition to a "forgotten" corner of Downtown.
  10. A good article from the Cleveland Scene: Wisdom From the Masters A celebration of 9 survivors from Cleveland's ever-crowded restaurant scene Zack Bruell Shifting trends: The labor market in Cleveland has improved drastically. When I opened Z, we had to hire people with zero fine-dining experience and train them to do what we wanted. It was naive of me to think that they'd stay with me. I ended up being the training ground for the rest of the city. It's much easier to find talent now. http://www.clevescene.com/cleveland/wisdom-from-the-masters/Content?oid=1944280
  11. Residents in Cleveland's Detroit-Shoreway neighborhood win battle to save ash trees Published: Thursday, July 08, 2010, 12:01 AM Everdeen Mason, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- More than three dozen ash trees in the Detroit-Shoreway neighborhood have been saved from the ax after residents successfully battled for three years against a city mandate to chop them down. Cleveland veered from its strategy of containing the spread of the deadly emerald ash borer by taking down trees and is allowing the use of trunk injection to protect the more than 60-year-old trees from the insect. Ash trees are a point of pride for West 50th Street residents, who say the lush canopy provided by the trees' leaves keeps their street beautiful and cool. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2010/07/locals_win_battle_against_city.html

Hey I was there this past weekend! I watched the fireworks on the 4th of July off the USS Yorktown in the harbor. The Battery is just stunning....and of course the rest of Downtown. It's honestly my favorite city south of DC. NOTE: the green sign on the first building reads "Daughters of the Confederacy," and is the entrance to a very cool marketplace. There is still a very strong civil war/confederate pride down there, altought during the 4th, there was a lot of celebrating it's colonial days and role in America's Independence.
  14. Thanks! That second picture is one of the most stunning skyline shots I've seen of Downtown from the Edgewater vantage point. I think it's a combo of the boats/people and the "clean" buildings from the lighting. Doesn't Downtown look better with more boats in the Harbor and along the shoreline?? :-D
  15. From Medcity: Cleveland Clinic Innovations starts 2nd decade with 26 companies Cleveland Clinic Innovations — the corporate venturing arm of the nation’s top heart hospital — is entering its second decade with a first-of-its-kind venture ranking, a brand-new incubator building and a growing portfolio of spin-out companies. Perhaps most impressive, those companies — 26 in all — have attracted $336 million in follow-on funding from other investors. “That’s a darn good number” for a 10-year-old innovations group whose average spin-off is about five years old, said Harry Rein, chairman of the group’s Industrial Advisory Board and a veteran venture capitalist. Cleveland Clinic Innovations (CCI) commercializes the inventions and discoveries of the Clinic’s doctors, researchers and professionals. The group’s activities include everything from investing a small amount of money to help an inventor validate a technology to prototyping a medical device to launching a company that makes a medical product to partnering with a health information technology firm to distribute its software. http://www.medcitynews.com/2010/07/cleveland-clinic-innovations-starts-2nd-decade-with-26-companies/
  16. Case Western Reserve University officials tell Cleveland council members about the benefits of LED lights Published: Wednesday, July 07, 2010, 4:08 PM Mark Gillispie, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Case Western Reserve University has begun to embrace the energy savings that LED lighting can provide, although on a far smaller scale than what the city of Cleveland proposes. The university's facilities services director and an engineering professor testified about the benefits of the high-tech lights Wednesday before a City Council committee that is considering LED-related legislation proposed by Mayor Frank Jackson. Jackson wants council to approve a 10-year contract to buy millions of dollars in LED street and traffic lights, tube lights and light bulbs from one company in exchange for the company building a manufacturing and research facility in the city and creating at least 350 jobs. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2010/07/case_western_reserve_officials.html
  17. No idea...it's "American?" This is the only info from the original article: Scott Kuhn, who will be leasing the Murray Hill building from Minnillo, agrees. The 33-year-old businessman already runs the Welshfield Inn in Burton, 87 West Wine Bar in Westlake and two other restaurants in Pennsylvania. He insists on retaining the architectural integrity of "this rich and historic building people have come to know," but top-to-bottom renovations are in order, he says. "It's a little tired, and we're going to breathe some life into the facilities," Kuhn says. When the property is reopened this fall as the Washington Place Bistro and Inn, it will be billed as a "modern American bistro with a fun spin on some traditional American comfort food and a focus on locally grown produce," Kuhn says. It will become one of the Little Italy community's rare non-Italian restaurants in memory.

Keep an eye on the City Planning Commission Design Review agenda. From the Uptown thread link: "The MOCA project, for which the design could be unveiled July 15 at a meeting of the Cleveland Design Review Committee, will occupy the strategically important corner at the western end of the triangle formed by Euclid Avenue and Mayfield Road in University Circle."
  20. More news... Landscape architect James Corner and Field Operations firm appointed to design public spaces in Cleveland's Uptown project Published: Wednesday, July 07, 2010, 2:28 PM Steven Litt, The Plain Dealer It's been clear for years that project sponsors in Cleveland's Uptown development have been aiming high in architectural standards for new buildings in the pivotal project. Architects with international reputations working on various aspects of Uptown include Farshid Moussavi of London, England; and Stanley Saitowitz of San Francisco. Now, at long last, public spaces in the eight-acre development will also have a distinguished author. Ann Zoller, director of the non-profit ParkWorks, announced today that James Corner of New York and Philadelphia, head of the landscape architecture firm Field Operations, will design outdoor spaces at Uptown. Corner, one of the nation's leading landscape architects, led the design of the High Line, a highly acclaimed park mounted atop an elevated rail line on the lower West Side of Manhattan in New York. http://blog.cleveland.com/architecture/2010/07/james_corner_and_field_operati.html
  21. Boston lashes out at Cleveland Gay Games Jul 7th, 2010 by Cyd Zeigler jr.. Boston organizers claim the bidding process wasn’t fair or transparent, and that they had the best bid for the 2014 games. They claim the FGG played favorites with Cleveland. One of the organizers, Steve Harrington, is so upset he says he won’t attend the 2014 Gay Games because the FGG didn’t choose Boston. “This is really systematic of the Federation itself,” [boston Pride president Linda] DeMarco retorts. “They put themselves out to be an organized organization that is moving forward and growing and they wanted to have sponsorships that would stay with them and take it to the next level. We were able to do that. In the end in Cologne, all they did was step back and use us as a catalyst to go with something far less because we were a threat to them. We were too good.” I’m not sure that having the attitude that you’d already won the bid (which is what the article says) is the best way to approach a final meeting, but that’s allegedly how Boston approached it. DeMarco said, “I don’t think any of us involved in the process thought that Cleveland was part of the scenario.” That was a huge strategic error on their part. Rule No. 1 in sports: Don’t underestimate your opponent. Hopefully the Boston folks will come around and support Cleveland wholeheartedly, and Harrington will bring his ball back and play. Frankly, I’m glad Cleveland won. Boston organizers complain that the idea of hosting the Gay Games in a less-gay-friendly place (to make a political statement) was given too much weight by the FGG. I don’t know how much weight it was given, but that’s why I’m glad they picked Cleveland. Part of the FGG’s mission is to change minds and be a visible agent of change. That’s a huge part of why Tom Waddell started the Gay Games. It’s a huge part of why Outsports exists. And I’m glad the FGG is taking their message to Ohio. Did the FGG make a mistake in picking Cleveland? I don’t know; I guess we’ll find out in four years. But I know this: I’ll be attending the Gay Games in Cleveland for sure, and I hope they have a record number of participants. http://outsports.com/jocktalkblog/2010/07/07/boston-lashes-out-at-cleveland-gay-games/
  22. Looks like the RRHOF will be in tonight's episode/storyline: Huey Lewis and Amy Yasbeck are guests stars on tonight's 'Hot in Cleveland' Published: Wednesday, July 07, 2010, 1:27 PM Mark Dawidziak, The Plain Dealer The "Hot in Cleveland" news is that Huey Lewis will be guest starring in tonight's episode of TV Land's first original scripted comedy, "Hot in Cleveland." It airs at 10 p.m. Titled "The Sex That Got Away," the episode finds former soap-opera star Victoria (Wendie Malick) reuniting with an old flame (Lewis) at a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame event. Meanwhile, Melanie (Valerie Bertinelli) gets up close and way too personal with her music idol, Hailey Nash (guest star Amy Yasbeck). The episode is something of a reunion for Malick and Lewis. 24. Little Italy has two things on the City Landmarks review: 1) Demolition of a house/new construction (everything built in Little Italy since roughly 2004 has been $250,000+, so I'm not worried too much) 2) The conversion of the Baricelli Inn into "Washington Place Bistro & Inn" http://planning.city.cleveland.oh.us/landmark/agenda/photo/07082010/index.php
