Cleveland: 2012 Democratic National Convention?
Agreed. However, we do have hotels in Independence, Cleveland Clinic/University Circle, and the Airport. And if you really want to strech it, Beachwood. I'm guessing the Twin Cities still more than out-do us.

Greater Cleveland Sports Commission News & Info
Another great Cleveland event starts today. Someone show these international kids around the city! It may be their only chance at visiting America. International Youth Sports Festival invades Cleveland; several area clubs to participate Published: Wednesday, June 30, 2010, 3:08 PM John Blake, Sun News A variety of local teams and individuals will compete and be part of the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission’s Cleveland Clinic Sports Health International Youth Sports Festival this weekend. The event runs from Thursday through Sunday and features three main events: The AC Milan Continental Cup soccer tournament, Cleveland Indians Charities Continental Cup for baseball and the new Cleveland Cavaliers Continental Cup for baseball. More than 3,500 athletes from more than 20 different countries are expected to participate, drawing an estimated $4 million into the local economy. http://www.cleveland.com/sun/all/index.ssf/2010/06/international_youth_sports_fes.html International Youth Sports Festival begins today in Cleveland Published: Thursday, July 01, 2010, 10:00 AM Everdeen Mason, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- When 3,400 athletes march into John Carroll University's Don Shula Stadium this evening for the opening ceremony of the International Youth Sports Festival, the youth will represent more than just their countries. The competitors from 20 countries are a product of the five years spent by the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission attracting a diverse group of participants through brainstorming, gathering international contacts and the recruitment of teams and sponsors for the annual Continental Cup competitions. This year alone, commission members went to Washington, D.C. twice to visit 13 different foreign embassies in hunt for teams. Play in soccer, baseball and basketball begins at 8 a.m. today at four sites sprinkled around the eastern suburbs. Championship games in all sports are Sunday. The main attraction though may be the athlete parade at Shula Stadium tonight at 7, preceded by an outdoor fair. http://www.cleveland.com/continental-cup/index.ssf/2010/07/international_youth_sports_fes.html

Cleveland: 2012 Democratic National Convention?
Even though all 4 can be considered battlegound states, I see Ohio as the only "must win", which may be Cleveland's only advantage. Minnesota will still most likely lean Democratic, Missouri has a fourth of the population as Ohio, and North Carolina will still lean Republican (although that may be why it could get the nod over Cleveland, since the gap has been narrowing over the years). Too bad the Flats hotel can't be built fast enough....maybe University Circle will get their two new hotels up-and-running??

Cleveland: The Residences at 668 Euclid Avenue
Zinc received a little write-up yesterday... Zinc in Cleveland serves up classic cocktails Published: Wednesday, June 30, 2010, 5:32 PM John Petkovic, The Plain Dealer East Fourth's glass spilleth over ... onto Euclid Avenue. And the glass doesn't taste much better than at Zinc. The newest addition to downtown night life -- 668 Euclid Ave., Cleveland, 216-583-9462 -- boasts a category-killer of a patio. It's cozy, tucked away and surrounded by buildings on three sides. And yet it's spacious, sprawling with a long bar, a fire pit and tables that make for a great alfresco vibe. It's mellow enough for kick-back conversation. But it also goes for a party vibe on Fridays, when it hosts "Party in the Park," which features bands at 5 p.m. http://www.cleveland.com/goingout/index.ssf/2010/06/zinc_in_cleveland_serves_up_cl.html

Cleveland: Leveraging Citywide LED Contract for Economic Development
Cleveland City Council committee begins hearings on new LED lighting legislation Published: Thursday, July 01, 2010, 6:00 AM Mark Gillispie, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio --While Mayor Frank Jackson's second effort to tie the purchase of millions of dollars' worth of LED lights to job creation requires competitive bidding, some council members remain skeptical that it's a good deal for the city. A joint council committee met Wednesday for the first of several hearings on the LED issue. It quickly became evident during the meeting that council opponents of the initial LED legislation are not ready to embrace this latest try. Those members continued to question whether some of the LED lights the city proposes to buy would save on energy costs, wondered about the wisdom of giving one company a 10-year contract and were unsure if the effort at creating a new economic model for city purchasing is viable. Finally, there continues to be mistrust of the administration. Darnell Brown, Jackson's chief operating officer, said the new ordinance gives companies the chance to prove claims that they can deliver both LED lights and jobs. The ordinance, which must be approved by council, requires the winning bidder to create at least 350 jobs and build a manufacturing plant and research facility in Cleveland. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2010/07/cleveland_city_council_committ.html

Cleveland: Downtown: The Avenue District
The difficulty of getting a condo loan may be the #1 issue, ESPECIALLY when the building is not half full (I straight up couldn't get a loan for the Avenue District because of this). Recently I was looking at buying, and I wanted to go condo, but there was about and $80,000-$100,000 difference in borrowing power when it came to a single-family home/townhouse and a condo. The condos I were looking at were just out of my reach loan wise, even though I could get a house for the exact same price. Long story short, I'm renting for another year or two until I can raise my credit score enough... I'm still pissed off there is a loan amount difference for condos and everything else...

Great Lakes Urban Exchange
^Maybe it would be a good time to invite some GLUE members to an UrbanOhio Happy Hour: http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,17344.420.html And if we're showcasing Cleveland...why not Cleveland's own Great Lakes Brewing Company?? I'm sure JivecitySTL could help spread the word to out-of-towners, as well as Cleveland GLUE members.

Cleveland: Leveraging Citywide LED Contract for Economic Development
Very interesting -- in the wake of the Cleveland City LED situation. I'm not sure if these are the same types of LED lights, but still interesting with the timing of this move: GE Lighting to license Rambus’ patented lighting innovations for LED lighting solutions June 29, 2010 | Julien Happich | To accelerate LED product development, GE Lighting, a unit of the General Electric Company’s Appliances & Lighting business, and Rambus Inc have signed a broad licensing agreement for the use of Rambus’ patented lighting innovations, including its product reference designs and manufacturing process know-how. The initial focus will be to create a flat-panel LED lighting system for architectural and commercial lighting for global markets. http://eetimes.eu/en/ge-lighting-to-license-rambus-patented-lighting-innovations-for-led-lighting-solutions.html?cmp_id=7&news_id=222902592&vID=209 GE Lighting and Rambus enter into license agreement for LED lighting solutions Posted on: Tue, 29 Jun 2010 04:38:29 EDT Jun 29, 2010 (M2 EQUITYBITES via COMTEX) -- Provider of lighting solutions GE Lighting and Rambus Inc (Nasdaq: RMBS | PowerRating), a technology licensing company, have signed a broad licensing agreement for the use of Rambus' patented lighting innovations. Wow, I had no idea they wanted to restore the balconies. This would be AMAZING! For Cleveland's Little Italy, a new gem at the corner of Mayfield and Murray Hill Roads Published: Tuesday, June 29, 2010, 3:24 PM Joe Crea, The Plain Dealer There's finally a new business operating at Mayfield and Murray Hill Roads. Mia Bella, a casual spot combining Italian and other Mediterranean cuisines, recently opened in the space that formerly housed Corbo's Bakery, long since relocated a few doors up the block. For her part, property owner Roseanne Passalacqua couldn't be happier for the transformation. "Everyone has put their heart and soul into this," she says, explaining that before the market crash of the Great Depression, the property was home to the Italian Savings and Loan. "We restored the tin ceilings, [and] a crystal chandelier, arches and other architectural features have been installed. My grandfather's safe is still here. The Mehmetis still use it as an office and wine room." Passalacqua says she hopes to soon have balconies erected on the front of the building. This treasure trove of a neighborhood appears to have a new gem in the fold. http://www.cleveland.com/dining/index.ssf/2010/06/post_3.html#_login

...but if I make it there, I can make it anywhere. :) ...as far as LBJ goes though, it is all about winning the championship and endorsement money from China. Good point...I think many newscenters are forgetting about the 15% Chinese ownership of the Cavs, The #1 selling Chinese beer Tsingtao’s sponsorship of the Cavs, and the "free" marketing that comes with it in China. If Lebron stays with Cleveland...China is going to have a larger influence on him, the team, and the city. Here's a story covering all this from 7 months ago: http://www.nbainchina.com/cleveland-china-lebron/

Cleveland: General Business & Economic News
I actually personally know 2 of these guys, and they really are "Cleveland lovers": Starting up in Cleveland: Young tech entrepreneurs may look elsewhere for success Jennifer Daddario Cleveland may rock, but for young tech entrepreneurs, it's the bright lights, big cities, and the call and experience of Silicon Valley that may lead to their success. Tim Gasper, 22, and Jim England, 23, are young Case Western Reserve grads who recently created CorkShare, a content-sharing website, in Cleveland. But the duo has hit the road and is spending their summer in Austin, Texas, to participate in the business incubator program Capital Factory. The idea is constantly and rapidly changing through the course of the Capital Factory program, but the duo hopes to have it all figured out by September, when they give their final presentation, a pitch of the company and product they have created. After that, the future of the company and the location of their headquarters are up in the air. Gasper, a self-described "Cleveland lover," says he knows he will be back one day, but also says, "We're trying to do whatever is best to keep moving our business forward." And that may mean taking their startup to another area. The tech community in Cleveland isn't as developed as in Silicon Valley or Austin, Gasper explains. "We want to get as many users as possible, and once you have a lot of users, then you apply a business model," Gasper adds. "It's an unconventional business model anywhere except the Valley." But Cleveland will always be a part of their plans. While the goal to make their business successful may take them away from their hometown, once success has been achieved, Cleveland is the next stop, and Gasper can foresee spearheading an incubator program like Capital Factory in Cleveland. http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/5535276/starting_up_in_cleveland_young_tech.html?cat=8
