  1. Ohio Third Frontier Commission awards money to NE Ohio biomed companies By CHUCK SODER 9:47 am, June 24, 2010 The big winners during the Ohio Third Frontier Commission's Wednesday meeting were biomedical companies, particularly those focused on imaging, as well as venture development group JumpStart Inc. and interns across the state. The commission awarded about $7 million to biomedical companies in Northeast Ohio and another $1.2 million to JumpStart. The group also voted to increase the size of its internship program to about $3 million for the fiscal year starting July 1, which is about double what the program received in past years, said Norm Chagnon, executive director of the Third Frontier Commission. CardioInsight Technologies Inc. of Cleveland was awarded $1 million to commercialize a technology for the imaging of electrical activity on the surface of the heart. Collaborators on the project include University Hospitals Case Medical Center, the Cleveland Clinic, Battelle Memorial Institute, Le Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Bordeaux, Michel Haissaguerre, M.D., and Draper Triangle Ventures. http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20100624/FREE/100629913

The Wyndham projects the games on their big screen when they are on. Maybe we could all plan on meeting there one day (if it's nice) and watch it. There are tables & chairs outside as well during the week! :) Way to go USA! Such a good game today!! I'm in, do we know when the next game is yet? Saturday at 2:30! I'll try to organize this to the best of my ability. haha. But there is a chance of rain(30%) & isolated thunderstorms on Saturday but the high is supposed to be 85. I can find out today if the Wyndham will be playing the game on their big screen on Saturday when I walk to work & if they will have tables and chairs out for people who want to watch it. Now, if it rains, does anyone have a specific place to all meet up at? Any favorite bars near or around Cleveland? I enjoyed watching the game two Saturdays ago at Garage Bar & it actually wasn't crowded unlike The Angler (sp/name?) across the street in Ohio City. But that is just me. :) Very cool idea. An Urbanohio Happy Hour/World Cup event. Unfortunitely, I'll be in Charleston, SC...

U.S. soccer team thrilled with American fans' response to World Cup success Published: Thursday, June 24, 2010, 11:29 AM Associated Press sports staff Irene, South Africa -- Tim Howard got back to the team hotel after the big win over Algeria, turned on a television and saw David Wright. Then he noticed what the New York Mets third baseman was wearing. "I guess he went out and bought a Landon Donovan jersey a couple of weeks back, and he wore it yesterday," the American goalkeeper said Thursday. "That's pretty cool, when you see guys like that in other sports, high-level athletes who you respect, getting involved and enjoying our team and our success." The Americans' opening 1-1 tie with England was seen by 13 million people on ABC, the largest audience to watch the U.S. soccer team since the 1994 World Cup at home. The controversial 2-2 draw with Slovenia was seen by 5.2 million viewers and 3.9 million homes — the most households for soccer in ESPN's history. http://www.cleveland.com/worldcup/index.ssf/2010/06/us_soccer_team_thrilled_with_a.html

  8. There was an article today in the Cleveland PD about rise in Ohio College population over the past decade. One thing stood out of me: Every major city in Ohio has a large state school, expect for Cleveland. Even Youngstown State is almost the same size of Cleveland's largest public, Cleveland State University. A few questions arise: How strong is an economic engine with having a high number of educated young people in a dense area? Should Cleveland do all it can to expand Cleveland State University an addtional 5,000-10,000 students?? What are the positives for cities like Columbus, Cincinnati, Toledo, and Akron with having such large state schools? Any other thoughts?? Here's the article: Enrollment up sharply since 2000 at Ohio's large universities Published: Thursday, June 24, 2010, 8:01 AM Rich Exner, The Plain Dealer Enrollment at at the main campuses at Ohio's public universities is up 14 percent since 2000. Ohio State remains the largest, at 55,870 students. But five others top 20,000 students each: Cincinnati (31,296), Akron (26,395), Kent State (25,351), Toledo (23,136) and Ohio U. (22,640). http://www.cleveland.com/datacentral/index.ssf/2010/06/enrollment_up_sharply_since_20.html
  9. Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority to pay $415,000 for advice on sludge, other issues Published: Thursday, June 24, 2010, 5:00 AM James F. McCarty,The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority will pay consultants $415,000 for advice on disposing of sludge, improving its shipping business and relocating docks. William Friedman, the authority's new president and chief executive, told board members Wednesday that he would have preferred to keep the work in-house, but needed the expertise of consultants. "We have big decisions with substantial economic consequences for the entire state that need to be made," Friedman said. "But we don't at this time have many of the facts to intelligently make these decisions. Soon we will." http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2010/06/cleveland-cuyahoga_county_port_15.html

  13. An interesting article... Sour Mix Getting Sweeter Cleveland's cocktail culture steps up by stepping back in time by Douglas Trattner It was only a matter of time until Cleveland's cocktail scene began to catch up with its food scene. Just as local chefs now routinely rely on fresh ingredients to construct their menus, area bartenders are following suit. Vanishing from bars are the bottles of Rose's concentrated lime juice, replaced by freshly cut citrus, squeezed at the last possible moment. Fading too are apathetic bar jockeys who know little and care less about the spirits behind them and the people in front of them. Today's enlightened bartender — or bar chef, or mixologist — is passionate about the art and craft of the cocktail. "With the evolution of the dining scene in Cleveland, customers are becoming more educated and sophisticated about food," explains David Haynes, bartender at Dante. "That sophistication naturally carries over into cocktails. Customers are no longer satisfied with a cold Budweiser." http://www.clevescene.com/cleveland/sour-mix-getting-sweeter/Content?oid=1935980
  14. Cleveland Clinic nets federal funds for research facility revamp June 23, 2010 The Taussig Cancer Institute at the Cleveland Clinic has been awarded more than $2 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for the renovation and expansion of its translational cancer research facilities. The National Center for Research Resources, which is part of NIH, awarded the grant. The funds will be used to update 3,600 square feet of laboratory space that was built on the clinic's main campus in 1928. The space was last renovated in the 1950s. Renovations will include a shared instrumentation room that will free up an additional 500 square feet to allow for more bench research. The expanded laboratory area also will allow for the recruitment of up to four new independent researchers, a dozen technical support positions, and an administrative assistant. http://www.cancernetwork.com/display/article/10165/1597041

  16. This is the only GLSC thread I could find--I hope I'm not causing a headache but here it goes: 1) Could we rename this thread "Cleveland: Great Lakes Science Center News and Exhibits" or even "Great Lakes Science Center/NASA Glenn Visitor's Center News and Exhibits." 2) Since the NASA Glenn Visitors Center is now inside the GLSC, maybe we can merge some of the posts regarding the move and relocation to this thread... http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,3352.30.html (posts 49-57) Anyways...looks like having NASA on the lakefront is really paying off: Skylab space capsule lands at Cleveland's Great Lakes Science Center Published: Tuesday, June 22, 2010, 11:00 PM Liz Navratil, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio — The capsule used in the Skylab 3 space mission traveled 24.5 million miles, setting a record 37 years ago. Tuesday, the capsule traveled 13 miles to become the centerpiece of NASA's Glenn Visitor Center at its new location in the Great Lakes Science Center. NASA announced in January that it was moving its visitor center from its Brook Park facility to the downtown museum so more people could access it. Over the last four months, pieces of exhibits -- such as shuttle and rocket models -- have been transported to the science center. "In the first two months [downtown], more people have seen these artifacts than would see them at Glenn in a year," said Howard Ross, associate director of planning and evaluation for the Glenn Research Center. "We wanted to make people more aware of NASA." http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2010/06/skylab_space_capsule_lands_at.html

  24. Ohio home sales rose in May, but national sales unexpectedly fell Published: Tuesday, June 22, 2010, 10:34 AM Updated: Tuesday, June 22, 2010, 11:23 AM Michelle Jarboe, The Plain Dealer But a nationwide report released today showed that sales of previously owned homes fell last month, a sign that the housing market is struggling to maintain momentum now that several incentive programs have expired. The National Association of Realtors said sales of existing homes dropped 2.2 percent from April to May, according to seasonally adjusted figures. Without adjusting for seasonal patterns, existing home sales rose just 0.8 percent. Many analysts were expecting a much larger increase. In Ohio, where the Realtors combine reports on new and existing homes, sales rose 10.6 percent from April to May, according to a report released this morning. The Ohio Association of Realtors does not provide seasonally adjusted figures. Home sales are up, across the board, when compared to last spring. In the 15-county local area, house sales jumped 38.5 percent from May 2009, while condo sales were 64.7 percent higher last month than a year before. Statewide, sales of new and existing homes were up 27.7 percent from May 2009. In Ohio, where the Realtors report average prices instead of medians, the average sale price for a new or existing home was $137,310 in May, up 3.9 percent from a year before. In Northeast Ohio, the average sale price for a single-family home was $128,622, a 19.6 percent increase from May 2009. The average sale price for a condo was $123,568, up 8.5 percent from a year before. http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2010/06/ohio_home_sales_rose_in_may_bu.html
