  3. Some british fine-dining: Pub Opens At Cleveland Hopkins International Jun 11, 2010 02:52 PM British-style pub fare is now on the menu for travelers at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (CLE). BAA Cleveland, developer of the Airmall at CLE, is pleased to announce the recent opening of The Pub, an Ohio-based restaurant chain offering an upscale, classic pub experience similar to those across the pond. The Pub (3,800 square feet) will feature traditional fare such as bangers and mash and fish and chips, along with a host of British-inspired appetizers, sandwiches, toasted paninis, salads and desserts. Passengers at Cleveland airport can grab a pint at The Pub in the main terminal by Concourse B security http://www.aviationnews.net/?do=headline&news_ID=180211

  5. Maybe we should send/sell them one of our stock of Cleveland Skyline photos...
  6. `Hot in Cleveland': TV Land insists that new comedy series is a love letter to our fair city Updated: Friday, June 11, 2010, 3:02 PM Michael Norman, The Plain Dealer The producers of TV Land’s new comedy series, “Hot in Cleveland," are going to great pains to assure us that they love our fair city. They even posted a valentine, “Things We Love About Cleveland,” on the TV Land blog, waxing rhapsodic about everything from Lebron James and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum to the Great Lakes Brewing Company and the West Side Market. "This show is going to end up being, I believe, a love letter to Cleveland," Valerie Bertinelli said during a telephone interview. "This is our way of paying homage to Cleveland. I've spent quite a bit of time in that area. I know it. And these women are discovering what people discover when they actually go to Cleveland -- what a great place it is." http://www.cleveland.com/tv/index.ssf/2010/06/hot_in_cleveland_tv_land_insis.html EDIT: Is it just me, or is that skyline not Cleveland...??
  7. ^^ Agreed 100%. Besides new construction, if any of those buildings from E 9th -E .12th could be converted residental, I know plenty of people who would move there in a heartbeat...but I'm talking condo mostly. 555 Euclid would be in the same boat as well. Piggy-backing off another success story of 668 Euclid and the Corridor, tripspapa's 24-hr "Titan's Gym" has a Facebook fan page. Feel free to become a fan: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Cleveland-OH/Titans-Gym-at-the-Atrium/120833517937534 I hope tripspapa isn't getting annoyed by another shout out...
  8. I brought someone there this weekend and he absolutely loved it. He'll definitely be back. I'm guessing just not too many people know about it yet. I hope they stay open...it's a great type of place to have downtown. Maybe we need to have our next UO happy hour there to support it... How was your visit to BODIES over the weekend? My friend and I are planning to actually go soon and I have high hopes for it. I think this has to partly do with seeing BodyWorld Exhibit a few years ago. I really enjoyed it and learned a lot. I have walked past the BODIES exhibit a few times already this week and people have been going in but I've yet to hear anything. I'm hoping to go next weekend or so. As a side note, I've been going to E.4th the past few weeknights and it has been pretty packed. It's really nice to see because there is a lot to offer but it is sad to see some places not open but that is an issue all on it's own. haha :) It was more packed and better than I expected. You know it's a draw for people who usually don't patronize E. 4th when I'm standing infront of Flannery's and had numerous people ask which direction to BODIES. The exhibit itself was very educational...and the sounds/visuals made me feel like I was in a museum. A little preview: there's one neat part where they show healthy lungs and black smokers lungs...then they have a place where you can drop your cigarettes in a bin -- I saw one guy do it. Whatever your beliefs, it's getting people down there. I personally learned quite a bit from it, but I missed it when it was at the science center.
  9. I did not know where to put this...just two feel good stories about people pushing for better in Cleveland and reusing what we already have: http://www.wcpn.org/WCPN/news/31052
  10. A nice little write up about Cleveland's "Gardens Under Glass:" Cleveland shopping mall sprouts urban farm By Julian Martin June 10, 2010 A shopping mall in Cleveland is putting a new spin on typical food court fare by trading Chinese food and chicken strips for fresh tomatoes and edible flowers. The Galleria at Erieview’s new Gardens Under Glass project houses an indoor farm amidst the mall’s shops and galleries. Built to cater to consumers’ increased interest in sustainability, as well as a way to revitalize empty retail space, the farm’s produce will be sold to mall patrons and incorporated into mall restaurant menus. Last year, Vicky Poole, the Galleria’s marketing and events director, was inspired to turn the mall’s central atrium into an indoor farm after seeing a photo of dozens of plants growing in a New York café windowsill, according to The Plains Dealer. After being awarded a $30,000 grant in February by Civic Innovation Lab, Poole and Jack Hamilton, a gallery owner at the mall, began working on the project’s first indoor organic garden. http://eatdrinkandbe.org/article/index.0610_green_sustainmall
  11. New leadership coming in. Cleveland Institute of Art's David Deming Retires After 12 Years of Innovative and Thoughtful Leadership CLEVELAND, OH.- David Deming will retire as president and CEO of The Cleveland Institute of Art on June 30 after a 12-year tenure. Deming spearheaded the plan for a unified campus on Euclid Avenue that will feature substantial renovations to the Joseph McCullough Center for the Visual Arts and construction of a new building immediately to the west of it. Renovation of the McCullough building began last spring and will be complete by the end of the calendar year; the new building will be constructed thereafter. Environmentally sensitive designs call for a “green” roof with sculpture garden and visual screens designed by acclaimed Dutch architect Winy Maas. The new campus will be part of the revitalized Uptown neighborhood of Cleveland’s University Circle. Deming will be succeeded at the Institute by Grafton J. Nunes, currently dean of the School of the Arts at Emerson College in Boston, whose term will begin July 1, 2010. http://www.artdaily.org/index.asp?int_sec=2&int_new=38594
  12. Great event this weekend showcasing Cleveland culinary skills at the Rock Hall, with "Rock themes:" Chef Jam 2010 at promotes Cleveland-area restaurants with food, rock music Published: Friday, June 11, 2010, 12:00 PM Michael Heaton, The Plain Dealer Steve Schimoler, the chef-owner of Cleveland's Crop restaurant, may mince homegrown garlic and chives, but he doesn't mince words. "Not to be crass, but if you own a restaurant in this town, you get asked to donate to every charitable event imaginable," he said recently. "And we do it. I thought, why don't we have an event to promote us?" Thus was born Cleveland Food Rocks, an organization thatpromotes the best this town has to offer in the way of tasty comestibles. In 2009, the events were tied into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremonies, which took place in Cleveland. This year, Schimoler has come back with Chef Jam 2010, in which 25 local chefs will be offering rock-music-related dishes Sunday night at the Rock Hall to raise money for Cleveland Food Rocks and the Rock Hall education department. Some of the chefs who are musicians will also be playing. Schimoler is a drummer in Cream of the Crop. http://www.cleveland.com/taste/index.ssf/2010/06/chef_jam_2010_promotes_clevela.html

uh oh... Greater Cleveland ad blitz begins Messages aimed at helping King James make the right free agency decision By Ken Robinson, Newsradio WTAM 1100 Friday, June 11, 2010 (Cleveland) – An advertising campaign is underway, that is targeted to just one person…LeBron James. Dave Gilbert, president of the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission says a dedicated group of citizens has produced a television, radio, internet, newspaper campaign to keep the “king of the court” in Cleveland. Gilbert explains that the ads direct people to the website MoreThanAPlayer.org which outlines specific actions that can be taken to convince James not to leave. With other cities like New York and Chicago launching campaigns to lure LeBron, Gilbert claims northeast Ohio would be conspicuous by its absence, for not doing the same. http://www.wtam.com/cc-common/news/sections/newsarticle.html?feed=122520&article=7229538
  16. Cleveland food selection just got better. What a spike in recent years!

  18. Eaton breaks ground for $170 million headquarters project in Beachwood Published: Thursday, June 10, 2010, 2:20 PM Michelle Jarboe, The Plain Dealer BEACHWOOD, Ohio -- Eaton Corp. broke ground this morning for its new corporate headquarters, a $170 million project that will occupy a 53-acre site in this East Side suburb. The diversified manufacturer, currently based in downtown Cleveland, plans to move about 700 employees to the Chagrin Highlands property in late 2012. The new Eaton headquarters will include a 580,000-square-foot building, enclosed parking, a fitness facility and walking trails. Surrounded by tall grass, on a ridge above much of Cuyahoga County, Eaton officials, politicians and members of the development team plunged gleaming shovels into a pile of dirt. The project developer, the Richard E. Jacobs Group, expects to begin site work next week and to start raising steel for the buildings early next year. http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2010/06/eaton_breaks_ground_for_170_mi.html
  19. Cleveland Botanical Garden selected for national pilot sustainability rating program Published: Thursday, June 10, 2010, 10:30 AM Michael Scott, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Cleveland Botanical Garden is on the forefront of setting new nationwide sustainability standards for landscape projects -- not only by pushing the green envelope on its own, but by developing new guidelines for everyone else. The University Circle garden was selected last month by a nonprofit group to be one of 150 pilot sites across the United States, Canada, Iceland and Spain where a new voluntary rating program will be evaluated. "We're thrilled to be a part of this -- to be able to share and learn of others' great ideas and for the privilege of showcasing this to the public in Northeast Ohio," said Natalie Ronayne, executive director of the Botanical Garden. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2010/06/cleveland_botanical_garden_sel.html
  20. I do have a decent amount of faith in President Berkman and CSU. Florida International expanded while he was there, and I see similar things for CSU. Not to mention, both went from a mostly commuter school to becoming a more "conventional" campus. My favorite quote from President Berkman is from his Inauguration Day. "Our campus has the potential to become an exciting, diverse, cosmopolitan neighborhood, and I intend to do everything I can to make that a reality," Berkman told faculty and friends of CSU at the Allen Theatre on Friday. "I envision a day soon when faculty and staff will come to live in this neighborhood, send their children to school here and together build a new, vibrant neighborhood in the city of Cleveland." ^^I still don't see why they couldn't do neighborhoods for Cleveland. The safety of the city changes drastically depending on where you live. Do you live on Woodland and E. 111 or do you live in Tremont or West Park.
  22. St. Emeric Hungarian Catholic Church parishioners want to preserve building as cultural center Published: Thursday, June 10, 2010, 9:30 AM Robert L. Smith, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Members of St. Emeric Hungarian Catholic Church fear they have a lot to lose after the last Mass on June 30, when their historic church on Cleveland's West Side is scheduled to go dark in the downsizing of the Cleveland Catholic Diocese. Northeast Ohio is home to the largest Hungarian-speaking population in the nation, partly because of St. Emeric's Hungarian language school. Each week, hundreds of children attend gatherings of the Hungarian Scouts in the church's Scout House, where a folk dance troupe rehearses. More than a house of worship, St. Emeric is a cultural center for the Hungarian-American community on a secluded street behind the West Side Market. Parishioners, rebuffed in their efforts to keep the church open, now hope they can keep the cultural traditions alive. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2010/06/can_a_doomed_nationality_paris.html

Strong rumors that IZZO is visiting Cleveland today...how's the weather?? Michigan State coach Tom Izzo reportedly will visit Cleveland today, meet Cavaliers officials Brian Windhorst, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Tom Izzo has flirted with NBA jobs before and then backed away from the edge only to stay at Michigan State. There's a chance that is what could be happening with his latest suitor, the Cavaliers. But there's no doubt the Michigan State coach is getting closer to that edge. According to a Michigan State source, Izzo has scheduled a trip to Cleveland on Thursday to meet with team officials and possibly tour the Cavs' facilities. Whether or not Izzo will go through with the trip is unknown. http://www.cleveland.com/cavs/index.ssf/2010/06/sources_say_msu_players_believ.html
  25. Cleveland public school students wow crowd at foundation meeting Published: Thursday, June 10, 2010, 6:00 AM Margaret Bernstein, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cleveland Foundation leaders enlivened their annual meeting Tuesday at Severance Hall by spotlighting several examples of hope hewn from poverty. President and Chief Executive Officer Ronald B. Richard said signs of success are sprouting for the 10 "innovation schools" his foundation has helped fund in the Cleveland school district in recent years. He then wowed the crowd by telling them that 100 percent of seniors at the School of Science and Medicine on the John Hay campus have been accepted to four-year colleges. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2010/06/cleveland_public_school_studen.html
