  3. Cleveland Indians pondering a facelift at Progressive Field, but funding is a mystery By Henry J. Gomez, The Plain Dealer May 19, 2010, 5:23PM CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Progressive Field, not quite two decades old, might be getting a makeover. But who would foot the bill for any physical improvements is a mystery. Could it be the Cleveland Indians, whose money challenges became clear last year during the team's second fire sale of high-priced talent in as many seasons? Could it be Gateway, the nonprofit development group that operates the downtown ballpark? Or could it be Cuyahoga County, where taxpayers still are paying for the stadium's construction and, through an increased sales tax, have begun paying for a proposed medical mart and convention center? http://www.cleveland.com/cuyahoga-county/index.ssf/2010/05/cleveland_indians_pondering_a_facelift_at_progressive_field_but_funding_is_a_mystery.html
  4. Cleveland council members wonder about conflict of interest in Sunpu-Opto deal By Mark Gillispie, The Plain Dealer May 20, 2010, 4:00AM CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A New Jersey businessman who portrayed himself to Cleveland City Council as a friendly matchmaker in a deal between the city and a Chinese lighting company has emerged as a part owner of the firm's North American operations. Several council members have said ties between Peter Tien and Sunpu-Opto Semiconductor Ltd. are a conflict of interest that should kill any deal with the company. Top aides to Mayor Frank Jackson dismissed the conflict-of-interest charge, saying Tien had no ties to either party when he introduced Sunpu-Opto representatives to city officials at a meeting in Shanghai last year. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2010/05/cleveland_council_members_wond.html
  5. I'm loving these different tours. I'm hoping CWRU continues to do more of them--and for all students. Case has a history of its students being in their own bubble, and Universities generally supposed to contribute to the lifeblood of cities. Although recently, I feel the tide is turning for the better.. CWRU tour of Cleveland aims to improve 'cultural competency' By Kaye Spector, The Plain Dealer May 19, 2010, 6:15PM CLEVELAND, Ohio - The 80 or so medical researchers on a tour of Cleveland on Tuesday had, undoubtedly, already heard of Superior-St. Clair, AsiaTown and Hough neighborhoods. But many didn't know about the recent growth of urban gardens, the importance of neighborhood health care facilities and the historic need for good housing. On Tuesday, one trolley car went east to St. Clair-Superior, AsiaTown and Hough; the other went west to Stockyard. The researchers received a packet with the areas' demographic and historical information. http://www.cleveland.com/healthfit/index.ssf/2010/05/cwru_tour_of_cleveland_aims_to.html
  6. Here's to European and world spin-offs!! Team NEO launches $1 million program to draw international business to Northeast Ohio By Tom Breckenridge, The Plain Dealer May 19, 2010, 6:22PM CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The regional effort to draw new business is about to broaden its scope -- to the other side of the Atlantic Ocean. Team NEO, the region's business-attraction group, is launching a two-year, $1 million program to draw foreign businesses. Europe will be the initial target of the effort, to be funded by the Cleveland Foundation. Team NEO announced the hiring of a Dutch-born economic development professional to lead "Cleveland Plus Business Europe." And it enlisted the help of a consulting firm based in Germany. They will focus on biomedical and advanced energy, emerging industries in Northeast Ohio. The goal over two years is to land three or four deals with companies that commit to a minimum $1 million investment here and would generate at least 20 jobs over three years, officials said. http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2010/05/team_neo_launches_1_million_program_to_draw_international_business_to_northeast_ohio.html

  13. Some good opinion.. Cleveland needs a casino while it awaits its casino: editorial By The Plain Dealer Editorial Board May 18, 2010, 4:36AM "Win-win" isn't a phrase that pops up much in the gambling game, but that's exactly what opening a temporary casino in the Higbee Building could be for downtown Cleveland and its residents. A "Phase 1, Come and Get a Taste of the Real Deal" would offer a rightly cynical citizenry tangible proof of progress toward building a $600 million, high-end, high-roller house of chance here -- not by 2011, as developer Dan Gilbert first promised, but by 2013. http://www.cleveland.com/opinion/index.ssf/2010/05/cleveland_needs_a_casino_while.html
  14. Opinions?? Cleveland council committee embraces LED lighting deal By Mark Gillispie, The Plain Dealer May 17, 2010, 10:02PM CLEVELAND, Ohio -- City Council's Finance Committee gave its approval Monday night to a deal that would grant a Chinese company exclusive rights to sell millions of dollars in LED lights to the city. The full council, however, did not approve the measure Monday because it lacked the 13 votes needed to pass an emergency ordinance. The legislation is expected to be approved next week during a third reading of the ordinance, at which point only 10 of the council's 19 members will have to give their support. The proposed 10-year deal with Sunpu-Opto Semiconductor has turned into a crucial test of Mayor Frank Jackson's efforts to revitalize Cleveland. The agreement calls for Sunpu-Opto to make Cleveland its North American headquarters and create 350 jobs in exchange for being the city's sole supplier of LED lights. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2010/05/cleveland_city_council_mulls_l.html

  16. Cleveland Furniture and Millwork Fair coming to downtown in July By Tom Breckenridge, The Plain Dealer May 17, 2010, 5:35PM CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Supporters of a downtown district showcasing the region's strengths in product design will test the concept with a furniture fair in mid July. The Cleveland Furniture and Millwork Fair will gather the region's furniture makers -- most of them Amish -- at the Halle Building on Euclid Avenue. For more than 3 years, top officials at Cleveland State University and the Cleveland Institute of Art have pitched the idea of a District of Design near PlayhouseSquare. The area would feature consumer-product showrooms and design studios that would attract buyers from across the country. 19. Bicyclists' commute to Cleveland about to get easier, more secure and arty By Thomas Feran, The Plain Dealer May 16, 2010, 12:00PM Two-tired Cleveland commuters soon will have a place to rest their bikes and bones. Regulations taking effect June 16 require secure bicycle racks to be installed at many parking lots and garages in Cleveland, even if they're not open to the public. And the Bike Rack -- a parking station with showers, lockers and repair services -- should open downtown in late summer. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2010/05/bicyclists_commute_to_clevelan.html

Big turnout boosts event officials: Cleveland Marathon Insider By Joe Maxse, The Plain Dealer May 16, 2010, 7:29PM Boom town: The popularity of running may be on the downswing nationally, but you wouldn't know it based on Sunday. For the second year in a row the Marathon and accompanying events had a record number of entrants, approaching 16,000. 21. Higbee Building being considered as temporary site for Cleveland casino By Joan Mazzolini, The Plain Dealer May 14, 2010, 7:00AM With Tom Breckenridge CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Higbee Building next to Tower City is emerging as the location for an early version of Cleveland's casino. Casino developer Dan Gilbert confirmed in a statement Thursday that his group, Rock Ventures, was investigating a "phase one" casino on the site. "Rock Ventures is in the later stages of due diligence of the downtown Cleveland Casino which includes finalizing a long-term agreement with a gaming operator as well as the ongoing evaluation of a "phase one" gaming operation within the Higbee building," Gilbert said through his spokeswoman. "Although neither of these major decisions have been finalized, we are making significant progress on both of these fronts," he said http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2010/05/higbee_building_being_consider.html

Is anyone going to the Cleveland conference?? JULY 15-17, 2010 http://urbanlabsconference.wordpress.com/ That's right, the long-awaited, much-anticipated, highly-celebrated ANNUAL GLUE CONFERENCE is upon us again. This time, we're showcasing the glories of Cleveland. Our theme this year, "Great Lakes Cities: Urban Laboratories," was selected because we know that our cities are the premier testing grounds for new ideas about what cities can fundamentally BE, and how they can serve ALL of their residents in an equitable, sustainable way. The ideas being concocted in our cities have applicability everywhere--and shouting that from the rooftops will allow us to emerge as leaders in the school of urban re-imagining. At the conference, you and 99 other urban enthusiasts can expect to: hear about a range of good ideas, including organizing efforts and policy changes; receive tours of Cleveland and some of Cleveland's most exciting projects; work collaboratively on an exciting, Cleveland-based initiative; and, most importantly, get to know each other--each of you a potentially invaluable resource to your new GLUEster friends. Check out UrbanLabsConference.com periodically for news about the agenda, tours, and other events as the conference draws near. And if you know you're free on July 15-17, why not REGISTER NOW? We promise this will be as much fun as summer camp. See you there! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
