  1. An interesting read from MedCity: Doctor-turned-venture capitalist excited about Midwest investing Q. What’s it like working with Bio Enterprise? A. Every day, I’m amazed at the level of involvement that ultimately translates into economic development for Northeast Ohio. It’s exciting stuff. It’s great for the entrepreneurs. http://www.medcitynews.com/2010/05/doctor-turned-venture-capitalist-excited-about-medwest-investing/
  2. More improvements to Cleveland's Sustainability: Cleveland adopts local food incentives Submitted by Marc Lefkowitz Today’s Cleveland-Cuyahoga Food Policy Coalition meeting shed light on Cleveland’s new policy to attract and create local, sustainable business. New legislation allows the city to offer a 5% discount to local food businesses bidding for city contracts. Since most bids are decided by 5% or less, a discount for being a certified Local Sustainable Business—a process that will be determined by the Cleveland Office of Sustainability—will offer a ‘huge’ advantage, said one staffer at the city. “We see the West Side Market as a perfectly centralized distribution point,” he said. “It could be where local farmers and purchasers like us have a marketplace a few times a week.” http://www.gcbl.org/blog/marc-lefkowitz/cleveland-adopts-local-food-incentives
  3. In an area where it is easier to get fast food than fresh produce, I love this! From Vacant to Vibrant Vision to reuse decaying inner-city land for urban farms, gardens takes shape; advocates see potential for self-sustaining industry By KATHY AMES CARR 4:30 am, May 10, 2010 Picture this: Cleveland's landscape reinvigorated with life in the form of urban farms and market gardens. It may be a long way off, but the idealistic vision for the city slowly is taking root as farmers and other entrepreneurs reuse vacant land and parking lots for urban agricultural initiatives. “The local food industry, of which urban agriculture is a part, is experiencing double-digit growth,” said Brad Whitehead, president of the Fund for Our Economic Future. “The great thing about urban agriculture is that it goes beyond business. It unites the rural and urban areas, and we realize a common destiny.” http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20100510/SUB1/305109996
  4. President Berkman has been a pretty d@mn good pickup for the city... Urban Med School To CSU Monday, May 10, 2010 Just one year into his tenure as President of Cleveland State University, Dr. Ronald Berkman is set to add a major enhancement to C-S-U. ideastream®'s Rick Jackson reports that Berkman wants a public medical school on campus - and he's already found a willing partner. Recognizing both the high vacancy rate in some medical jobs here - and sensing what he calls a need for a public medical school in the area, Ronald Berkman has championed a deal with the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine and Pharmacy, based in Rootstown, to offer a Med School track at CSU’s downtown Cleveland campus. Its focus will be primary medical care in urban communities - in keeping with Berkman’s goal of making CSU better reflect its urban surroundings. http://www.wcpn.org/WCPN/news/30672

Whoa thanks for the link. I really had no idea about any of this. Definitely going to look into this. EDIT: FlygalH2K, besides Shaker Lakes, one of the best places to run is Lakeview Cemetry is University Circle. I know it sounds weird running though a cemetry, but it is very scenic with winding sidewalks and hills.

The team invited Towler after it learned he is a big fan of LeBron James. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2010/05/raymond_towlers_dream_comes_tr.html

  22. Anyone know if we're losing any historic buildings?? Cleveland school district places 25 buildings on demolition list By Thomas Ott, The Plain Dealer May 05, 2010, 9:25AM CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Cleveland schools will add to a stockpile of closed buildings this summer, then go on a demolition spree. The district intends to level 25 buildings, including 13 of the 16 schools set to close in June, according to a plan released this week. The downsizing is part of the district's attempt to erase a $53 million deficit. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2010/05/cleveland_school_district_want.html
  23. I was wondering if all those aerial shots of the Rock Hall during the nationally-televised Cavs game would help Cleveland tourism at all. 24. Sounds like they may have nabbed the right guy for the job. Cleveland-Cuyahoga Port Authority taps new chief executive By Sandra Livingston, The Plain Dealer May 04, 2010, 11:10AM CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority this morning selected William Friedman, of Indianapolis, as the port's new chief executive. "This is truly an honor," Friedman said after the morning meeting where it was finalized. "I wouldn't be here if I didn't think the Port of Cleveland had tremendous potential." Friedman served from 1990 to 2004 as chief executive of the ports of Indiana and Seattle. He left to become a vice president of ports and logistics for the real estate investment trust Duke Realty Corp. and has served as a management consultant for the past year. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2010/05/cleveland-cuyahoga_port_author_1.html
  25. London architect to design 20-year Cleveland Clinic growth plan By Steven Litt, The Plain Dealer May 04, 2010, 9:05AM CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Cleveland Clinic has reached around the globe to London, England, for a team of architects to help it chart the next 20 years of growth at its campus in the city. Dr. Toby Cosgrove, the clinic's chief executive officer, said that the clinic has hired Foster + Partners, headed by Lord Norman Foster, one of the world's leading architects, to spearhead a four-month planning process. Cosgrove said the results would be made public in late summer. The goal is to find locations for hundreds of millions of dollars' worth of new construction, gradually expanding the clinic to the edges of its 168-acre campus, where 25,000 of its 40,000 regional employees work. http://blog.cleveland.com/architecture/2010/05/london_architect_to_design_20-.html
