Cleveland: Case Western Reserve University News & Info
^Are they talking about the green space behind the library?? It's going to be a little hidden over there. Not to mention, it sort of is out by itself, especially compared to the residental locations. The only plus I can see expanding the fringes of the campus, and butting it right up against the Art Museum --seemingly more connectivity.

This alone is why this building should be saved -- moot point of any of our urban planning beliefs. How is there not a historic landmark there? Where is the Rock Hall on this one??

Cleveland: Case Western Reserve University News & Info
WOW! How about this for a gift?? Look's like we might be seeing even more cranes in University Circle. $20 million gift to Case Western Reserve University will kick-start plans for new student center By Janet Okoben May 03, 2010, 6:28PM A $20-million gift from an already familiar name at Case Western Reserve University will bring a new student center to campus. Tinkham Veale II, through the Veale Foundation, pledged the gift announced Monday night. Two buildings on the CWRU campus -- the Veale Convocation, Recreation and Athletic Center and the Veale Natatorium -- already are named for the 95-year-old donor. The new building, the Tinkham Veale University Center, is being billed as a "distinctive gathering place for all members of the university community." The Thwing Center, which currently houses the bookstore, a restaurant and student-organization offices, will remain in use. University leaders have chosen to build in the grassy area on East Boulevard, across from the Cleveland Museum of Art and between the Cleveland Institute of Art and the Kelvin Smith Library. Cleveland: Downtown Aquarium
Whatever happened to the proposed aquarium for the West Bank of the Flats? The highly touted tank is still on the drawing board, although a projected summer opening appears as if it will have to be pushed back. The developers said last June that they had collected about half of the total costs, and Cleveland City Council agreed to provide a $2 million loan. The aquarium was projected to attract more than 400,000 visitors a year and boost the city's economy by up to $10 million. City officials say anticipation for the aquarium continues to run high. Cleveland: Detroit-Shoreway / Gordon Square Arts District: Development News
GSAD getting more and more press: Gordon Square Arts District among winners of Cleveland Arts Prize By Julie Washington, The Plain Dealer May 03, 2010, 5:30AM CLEVELAND, Ohio -- In a rare move, a Cleveland Arts Prize has been awarded not to a person or an organization, but a neighborhood. Gordon Square Arts District -- a collection of theaters, restaurants and galleries clustered around West 65th Street and Detroit Avenue -- and its leaders are being honored for having the vision and influence to revitalize a Cleveland neighborhood using the arts as an economic engine. http://www.cleveland.com/arts/index.ssf/2010/05/gordon_square_arts_district_am.html ------------------------------------------------------------------- It's only intermission for renovations at Cleveland Public Theatre By Tony Brown, The Plain Dealer May 01, 2010, 11:59PM CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Our Lady of Perpetual Renovation. That's what Cleveland Public Theatre staffers call their main facility, two buildings near West 65th Street and Detroit Avenue. The company, formed in 1981, took over a former, second-story dance hall in 1984. A motorcycle club renovated it into the Levin Theatre in exchange for legal representation from CPT founder James Levin, a lawyer. In 1995, CPT acquired the 1912 Gordon Square Theatre next door. The Storefront Studio opened in the dance-hall building in 2007. Total investment through 2009 on those buildings: $1.5 million. http://www.cleveland.com/onstage/index.ssf/2010/05/its_only_intermission_for_reno.html

President Berkman is keeping up to his word: Cleveland State University finds location for its elementary school By Janet Okoben May 01, 2010, 8:30AM CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cleveland State University will pay $180,000 annually to lease First United Methodist Church for an elementary school the university is creating in partnership with the Cleveland School District. CSU trustees have approved a one-year lease for offices in the back of the church, at East 30th Street and Euclid Avenue. It has been vacant since January after that congregation merged with the Epworth-Euclid United Methodist Church at University Circle. The church sanctuary is not part of the lease with CSU. She just can't see it. Krumins is 7 years old. The film is "A Nightmare on Elm Street," the very R-rated remake of the horror classic that features melty-faced slasher Freddy Krueger. In flashbacks, Krumins plays Little Nancy, the younger version of the film's star, Rooney Mara. http://www.cleveland.com/moviebuff/index.ssf/2010/04/kyra_krumins_horror-movie_dile.html

Cleveland: Marketing the City
We all know Cleveland Cavs playoffs=money into Downtown and the area. but, how smart of a move for Gilbert was it to sell that 15% to the Chinese investors?? Even if these estimates of Chinese viewers are high, I bet there are still millions and millions of Chinese routing for Lebron and Cleveland. One great shot of the skyline already by TNT. Cleveland: Cavs in playoffs boosts local businesses' payoffs CLEVELAND -- The economic impact of the Cleveland Cavaliers' playoff run increases with every round the team competes in. Local businesses have been cashing in for years. The Cavs and Positively Cleveland estimate as many as 200,000,000 Chinese fans could be watching each playoff game, especially Cavs games. "Basketball is the most popular sport in China," says Roche. The Cavs not only have the game's most popular player in LeBron James, but a Chinese investor also owns a substantial portion of the Cleveland franchise. "All those views of Cleveland on TV, the beauty shots and scenes of our city, are priceless in terms of promoting Cleveland," Roche says, of the exposure Northeast Ohio gets on international NBA telecasts, especially in China. http://www.wkyc.com/news/local/news_article.aspx?storyid=135026&catid=3

Cleveland: Downtown: Playhouse Square Development and News
Haha thanks -- I really gotta check out the westside sometime. Either way, more lighting downtown is a HUGE plus. Just a simple addition of major lighting can really spruce up an area, and how awesome that's it's going here-- 500-1000+ residents via Collegetown in the next year, new Great Lakes Theater renovations and Cleveland Playhouse relocation, Kent State Univ addition, new businesses, potential residental and retail developments, and the strong possibility of the Jewish Federation Building becoming the Cleveland Immigrant Welcome Center--this stretch of Downtown Cleveland is quickly becoming one of the most exciting areas anywhere in the city. Lastly, the more lighting the better with all the new students moving down there.

Some rumbling coming from the west bank of the flats (wonder if this is connected to an aquarium by any chance...??) SAVING ROCK BOTTOM . . . Rumors are afloat that the popular Rock Bottom Restaurant and Brewery in Cleveland's Flats is on the brink of closing. Any truth, I asked managing partner Mark Stanton? "Our lease IS coming to a close, but Rock Bottom and the Jacobs Investment Group are working to extend our lease, and negotiations have been hard," Stanton says. Fans aren't giving up without a fight. A grass-roots movement is shaping up with the aim of either saving the Rock or coaxing it into a new location.
