Cleveland: University Circle News (Non-Construction)
This thread is either long overdue...or maybe being cleaned in some form. This should help out with topics covering Natural History Museum, Cozad-Bates House, Botanical Gardens, Children's Museum, UCI, CMA, Hessler, etc -- all non-construction of course. REMBEMBER: We do have threads on Little Italy, CWRU, CIA, Cleveland Orchestra, and all the construction related threads. Cleveland: General Business & Economic News
Man this is a crappy day. Cleveland Police lay-offs, Cleveland Orchestra going on strike, and now American Greetings talking about moving?? Wow, I think we need a breather. Cleveland can't afford for one of these things to happen. Of course, not one has actually happened. EDIT: Oh wait, RTA cut routes....there we go; there's the Debbie Downer.

Cleveland: General Business & Economic News
Good article from The Economist: Restoring Cleveland Micro-projects aim to restore a shattered area Jan 7th 2010 | CLEVELAND, OHIO The recession has exacerbated the divide, as has the billion or more dollars poured into expansion projects in the University Circle area in recent years. Four cranes block out the skyline, but the foreground is row upon row of boarded-up houses and shuttered storefronts. The Cleveland Clinic, Case Western Reserve University and University Hospitals are powerhouses of economic activity, spending a combined $3 billion on goods and services annually. But little of that money stays local. The Evergreen Co-operative Laundry opened in October 2009 after spending $5.7 million in start-up costs on building and equipment. Ohio Solar Co-operative, a solar-panel installation company, also launched in October. Green City Growers opens later this year and will grow lettuce and herbs on 14 acres of once-abandoned lots, selling produce to nearby hospitals and competing with goods trucked in from Californian farms. Each of the ten projects aims to employ around 50 local workers. MORE AT http://www.economist.com/world/unitedstates/displaystory.cfm?story_id=15213793

Cleveland: Cleveland State University: Development and News
That building is directly across from Parkview Apts. I hate to say it, but I am definitely concerned for the students safety if this move is made...especially the ones who work late night. But, Overall a GREAT idea for such a hidden gem! It would pretty much connect CSU to the E.12 neighborhood. Cleveland Public Schools: News and Discussion
whoa... 18 Cleveland schools to close as part of transformation plan that aims to raise academic achievement By Thomas Ott, The Plain Dealer January 05, 2010, 6:30PM CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A dramatic reform plan will close 18 Cleveland schools, while making top-to-bottom changes designed to boost dismal academic performance within five years. The plan, announced Tuesday by Chief Executive Officer Eugene Sanders, is intended to better prepare students for college and careers, offer families more choices and demand accountability at all levels. It could also mean teacher layoffs, principal reassignments and the wholesale replacement of staffs at some schools. Sanders' recommendations, which the board will vote on Feb. 23, hinge on collaboration with the Cleveland teachers union, backing from the community and determining where he will come up with an estimated $70 million over three years to pay for the plan at a time when the school district faces a $53 million deficit. Cleveland Orchestra News & Info
OK -- this is getting serious. Here is one major asset so much important to the city both cultural and in our international view. Just wish we had some money going around. I'm hoping we have the support--Or maybe it's time to RISE UP CLEVELAND! Contract talks intensify at Cleveland Orchestra By Zachary Lewis, The Plain Dealer December 31, 2009, 4:18PM Contract negotiations between the management and musicians of the Cleveland Orchestra have begun to harden, setting the stage for a possible strike or lockout as early as next week. On the eve of 2010, the orchestra’s administration announced that the musicians had terminated the month-to-month extension under which they’ve been playing since September, and that as of midnight, no plan would be in place to pay the artists for work scheduled to begin Tuesday. The extension was to a three-year contract signed in September 2006. Without a new contract or extension, the players, members of the Cleveland Federation of Musicians, are free to strike. Cleveland: Whiskey Island Coast Guard Station Redevelopment
Old Coast Guard station languishes; Some cleanup, repairs done, but progress scant on plans for new use By Plain Dealer staff December 29, 2009, 7:18PM Whatever happened to the effort to fix up the old Coast Guard station linked to Whiskey Island? Like the glaciers that created the Great Lakes, the process on the station has been painfully slow. Even so, the hardy have crept into the buildings -- a former Coast Guard station headquarters, boathouse and service garage at the end of a not-fully-secure 1,000-foot pier linked to Whiskey Island. And the six-story observation tower offers unequaled views of Lake Erie and Cleveland. MORE AT http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2009/12/old_coast_guard_station_langui.html
