Cleveland: Urban Gardens & Farms
A little blurb from a Blog I found: http://greenopolis.com/goblog/follownathan/follow-nathan-cleveland-a-bit-greener-than-i-thought Follow Nathan: Cleveland... a Bit Greener Than I Thought Submitted by follownathan on Sun, 07/12/2009 - 10:02am. When in Cleveland I was lucky enough to meet, chat and interview a few different impressive people starting with Meagan who has spearheaded a very cool project known as Gather ‘Round Farm. This was the first “urban farm” I have visited on this journey and I am certainly glad I made the visit. I never thought I would find myself conducting an interview in a chicken coop on a parking lot right next to fast food joints and a funeral home. But hey… this is America and with American comes urban environments and there certainly should be no reason as to why people cannot grow vegetables and raise chickens in a city landscape and as a matter of fact I encourage more city dwellers to do the same. At the end of the day this was one of the more interesting stops on this journey and the vivid contrast between farm and city life was completely unfolded right before me. As lower income families passed by with smiles and laughter while enjoying a meal from Wendy’s I realized that this urban farm has great potential to make a connection between the youth in the local community and where their food actually comes from. These are the types of people and organization that local communities and government need to support. I wish the people at Gather ‘round Farm the best in their mission and I hope their crops grow healthy and strong! If you know me well you are aware that one of my favorite things to see and do after a long ride is visit a local micro brewery and this was of course on the radar in Cleveland as well. I had put a feeler out to my twitter community letting people know that I was looking for and sure enough my someone came through! @Merehithmo who grew up in the Cleveland area and currently resides in Brooklyn, NY had guided me to the Great Lakes Brewing Company. I was honestly shocked to see and hear that sustainable business practices were one the very top of the priority list. It was a shock to find out that A. A brewery was environmentally driven and B. It was based in Cleveland Ohio. Two bullet points I would have least expected to see combined. In fact I am so impressed with the zero waste initiatives at Great Lakes I thought I would share a few with you here in my blog.

http://www.medcitynews.com/index.php/2009/07/cleveland-clinic-lou-ruvo-center-for-brain-health-opens-in-las-vegas/ Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health opens in Las Vegas July 13, 2009 by Mary Vanac Filed under Community, Top Story LAS VEGAS, Nevada — The Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health will accept its first patients today. The highly specialized clinical center will aim at advancing research, early detection and treatment of neurological diseases, according to the Cleveland Clinic, which in February agreed to staff and manage the center. Diseases to be treated include Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s, Parkinson’s and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, sometimes called Lou Gehrig’s disease. Las Vegas businessman and philanthropist Larry Ruvo began planning the center after his father, Lou Ruvo, died in 1994, a victim of Alzheimer’s disease. Larry Ruvo wanted to create a cognitive disease centerwhere compassionate care would go hand-in-hand with cutting-edge treatments, and sophisticated research would be combined with education for caregivers...

http://www.dose.ca/tv/story.html?id=70d49e15-163b-4590-9b62-e230973dc655 Matt Damon and LeBron James Head to Entourage Kat Angus Published: Monday, July 13, 2009 Entourage has received plenty of criticism lately for recycling its storylines, but the HBO comedy isn't having any problems recruiting celebrity guest stars, as TV Guide reports that both Matt Damon and LeBron James will make appearances on the sixth season finale. Although, to be fair, Damon's guest spot serves a double purpose of providing publicity for the actor's charity. "It wasn't hard to get him," executive producer Doug Ellin told TV Guide Magazine. "Matt came on the phone with me and wanted to do something that focused on his charity, One By One, which helps kids all over the world." Damon's main role in the finale is to make Vince (Adrian Grenier) feel so uncomfortable that the latter gives a large donation to One By One. "The joke is that Matt is very passionate about his charity - almost in a stalkerish kind of way," Grenier said. "Vince becomes intimated by his intensity. He ends up bullying Vince into giving much more than he should." "More than he should," Adrian? That's not a very charitable thing to say. Damon reportedly also shares a scene with Cleveland Cavaliers superstar Lebron James, and, as Ellis claims, "they just kill it!" The season finale won't air until Oct. 4, but if you can't wait for more celeb sightings on Entourage, former Friend David Schwimmer will be showing up on the Aug. 2 episode.

Case Western Reserve University Spartans Athletics Discussion
Like I stated above, I think this is a great idea with helping the university with alumni relations, school spirit, sense of idenity, and the promotiion of the newly-found CWRU Fall sports success on the National level. Hideous uniforms...but I do like the Euclid Tavern after party. http://www.case.edu/athletics/varsity/news/2008-09/heritageday.html HERITAGE DAY MODERN DAY SPARTANS TO REMEMBER THEIR HERITAGE... This September 5 the modern day Case Western Reserve University football team will pay tribute to the University’s gridiron history, which began in 1890, by wearing retro jerseys as part of a first ever Heritage Day. Pictured below are senior receiver Ryan Kolesar (right) and senior linebacker Jeff Brown (left). The Spartans will face Kenyon College at 12:00 p.m., but instead of wearing their usual blue and white uniforms with the Spartan logo on their helmets, Case Western Reserve will wear a red and brown jersey with white pants. Brown and white were the school colors for Case Institute of Technology (Case, Rough Riders) and red and white were the colors of Western Reserve University (Reserve, Red Cats). The Spartans will also wear Rough Rider and Red Cats logos on their helmets in place of the Spartan. Across the front of the retro jerseys is “CWRU”, paying tribute to all football players who competed when the school's second reference was CWRU. After the decision to federate in 1967, Case Western Reserve saw the continuation of the Case-Reserve series for three more seasons. In the fall of 1970, Case Western Reserve University was represented by a single team in intercollegiate football. The proposal to merge the Case and Reserve football teams was made by the Case Athletic Director Phillip K. (Nip) Heim after discussions with the players of the two football squads and the Reserve and Case athletic directors. Flory Mauriocourt, head football coach at Reserve, was named head coach of the merged University team. Ernie Green, assistant vice provost for student affairs and former Cleveland Brown, announced the appointment in February of 1970 and said that it was strongly supported by Reserve Athletic Director Ed Lewis, Heim, and Case Football Coach Doug Mooney. The new team, the Spartans, continued to play in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference. The Case-Reserve rivalry started 78 years prior to the union. At the time, it was the oldest rivalry in the Midwest and third oldest in the country. Reserve won 49 games, Case won 18 and six ended in ties. In the early 1900’s both Case and Reserve played Big Ten teams on an even basis and both schools had winning records against Ohio State. For many years the Case-Reserve game was played at League Park on Thanksgiving Day. In 1941, a record crowd of 38,000 saw the contest in which Reserve defeated Case 26-6 and went on to beat Arizona State in the Sun Bowl. Reserve had undefeated seasons in 1894, 1935, 1936 and 1938. Case won four Ohio championships prior to 1933. From 1934 to 1942 Reserve won 65 games and lost only eight. The Case Rough Riders received their nickname during the 1930-1947 coaching regime of Ray Ride. Two of their greatest players were Bill Lund, one of the original Cleveland Browns, and Ray Mack who declined a professional football career to star with Lou Bourdeau as half of the Cleveland Indians’ second base-shortstop combination. Reserve teams were dubbed the Red Cats in the early 1930’s. Eddie Finnigan was the outstanding figure in Reserve football history. He was an all-American player in 1932. In 1951, he returned to Reserve as coach and Athletic Director. His teams won PAC championships in 1955 and 1960. The outstanding player of this era was the late Warren Lehr, who later starred as a defensive back with the Cleveland Browns. MORE FUN FACTS … The last Thanksgiving Day game played between Case and Reserve was November 26, 1953 at Clarke Field, the home field for Case at the time. Besides League Park, where they played over 10 times, the holiday game was also played several times at old Cleveland Municipal Stadium. The last Case-Reserve football game was played November 15, 1969 at Finnigan Field. The Red cats defeated the Rough Riders 28-14. **The above information was obtained from a "Rough Cats or Red Riders?" article printed in a Reserve alumni publication [The Men of Adelbert]. The Official *I Love Cleveland* Thread
I guess I'll post this here. An architect and Cleveland native who lives in Cleveland's Fairfax neighborhood with her husband, August Fluker, and their son, Cole, she chairs the city's Landmarks Commission. USA: Property Values News & Discussion
Well, Forbe's has the story ..where you at PD http://www.forbes.com/2009/07/10/clear-capital-housing-index-business-wall-street-home-prices.html Good News From Wall Street's Home Price Gurus Maurna Desmond, 07.10.09, 05:00 PM EDT A new housing market index with a solid pedigree says things are looking up. While most homeowners cringe at the still crumbling Case Shiller Home Price Index, the firm that Wall Street trusts to gauge home prices has launched its own metric. And it's mostly going up. After three years sliding across the board, home prices gained on a quarter-over-quarter basis in three out of four regions during the three months ended June, according to Clear Capital, a real estate valuation firm out of Truckee, Calif., that caters to institutional clients like banks and the government. "This month's market report was both surprising and encouraging," said Kevin Marshall, the firm's president. "There are still a lot of negative economic indicators out there, and housing market is not out of the woods yet, but it is a very healthy thing to see home prices stabilize for a bit." July index, the firm's first monthly reading, showed that home prices in the Midwest and the South rose 5.3% and 2%, respectively, from the quarter before. Ohio's three largest cities lead in quarterly gains with Cleveland rising 19.6%, Columbus, 15.6%, and Cincinnati, 12.9%. The Northeast, which is just beginning to get hit with foreclosures, saw very little price appreciation, just 0.1%. A seasonal uptick, spring is a popular time for home purchases, generous first-time homebuyer tax incentives, as well as ongoing foreclosure moratoriums were all credited with bolstering home prices. Subprime-scourged Las Vegas saw the steepest decline with a 12.4% slide. However, the West showed signs of stabilizing, falling only 0.7%, after losing as much as 10.5% in a single quarter last year. Clear Capital's numbers suggest more of an improvement than the June Case-Shiller index, released last week, which showed a slowing in price declines and not an uptick (See "Prices Stabilize, But Housing Trouble Still Looms"). This is because the indicator cooked up by economists Robert K. Shiller and Karl Case in the '80s and later purchased by ratings agency Standard & Poor's, has a three-month lag and is based on data furnished by county tax offices. "If we tried to speed things up significantly, the data is not going to be as complete, and then we are going to be facing big revisions," said David Blitzer, chairman of the S&P index committee. "I'd like to have to have faster reporting, but it's a tradeoff."
