  1. I really love the momentum that has been occuring with this: first the bike racks going in all over the city, then bikes lanes being put in/planned, now a $370,000 "bike station" in the heart of downtown. 17 bikes is a good start. It sounds like they don't want to get too big, but that seems like a perfect number to start.

Terry Pluto's take on the trade: Like the Cleveland Cavaliers' deal for Shaquille O'Neal? You should love it by Terry Pluto, Plain Dealer Columnist Thursday June 25, 2009, 2:22 PM You should love the Cavaliers' trade for Shaquille O'Neal. Absolutely, positively, without-a-shred-of-doubt be gushing about the deal that brings a future Hall of Famer to Cleveland, a 37-year-old who still was voted the third-best center in the NBA. In Phoenix, O'Neal averaged 17.8 points and 8.4 rebounds while shooting 60 percent from the field and foul line in 75 games last season. The Cavs gave up so little in this trade. Ben Wallace is an aging big man contemplating retirement after breaking his leg last season and receiving treatments on both knees. They also sent the Phoenix Suns a spare part guard in Sasha Pavlovic, plus a second-round pick in the 2010 draft along with $500,000. The center’s members include Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals and the local biopharmaceutical company Athersys. 7. I'm not sure if this has been posted before, so: http://www.laprensatoledo.com/Stories/2009/062609/City.htm A Public Forum on the Medical Mart at the City Club The City Club of Cleveland will host Cuyahoga County Commissioner Tim Hagan; Cleveland Clinic CEO Toby Cosgrove; and President of Merchandise Medical Properties, Inc. Chris Kennedy to discuss the vision and details of the Medical Mart. Since 2005, MMPI, County officials, and local health care institutions have been negotiating how to turn the concept into a reality. The panel will convene at noon Monday, June 29, 2009, noon, at The City Club of Cleveland. In 2007, Cuyahoga County Commissioners implemented a ¼-cent sales tax increase to collect funds to support the development of a new convention center. After evaluating 18 sites throughout Cuyahoga County, MMPI worked to identify ways in which the Medical Mart and Convention Center could be built within the anticipated funds in the existing convention center. MMPI evaluated more than 18 sites throughout Cuyahoga County and, with the urging of County officials, focused its efforts on three downtown sites including Tower City, the existing convention center, and the Flats. Tickets are $18 for members and $30 for non-members. Lunch is included. They can be purchased by calling The City Club at 216.621.0082 or visiting the website at www.cityclub.org.

I like this story the best so far: Shaq Brings Starpower, Hope for LeBron Posted Jun 25, 2009 10:41AM By Jay Mariotti He's accustomed to the NBA's sunniest and most extravagant addresses, from Disney World to Hollywood to South Beach to the Arizona desert. Ontario Street in downtown Cleveland? Put it this way: Shaquille O'Neal will have to buy a winter coat, assume a less gaudy nickname (The Big Smokestack?) and watch courtside celebrities such as Jack Nicholson and Ludacris suddenly morph into Drew Carey. But there's nothing ludicrous about this new development in his fascinating journey through basketball and life. Shaq is intelligent enough to realize, at 37, that even one season with the Cavaliers could have a profound impact on his legacy -- and that of LeBron James. If Shaq wins his fifth NBA championship in a town that hasn't won a title in a major sport since 1964, and he succeeds in keeping an ambitious native son in his native northeast Ohio, his work will be done. Unfortunately, until recently, that meant a long trip to Cleveland, Ohio. However, in December 2008, the Rock & Roll hall of Fame NYC Annex was opened in Soho. And on May 12th a feature exhibit, "John Lennon, the New York City years" was added to the museum. The NYC Annex contains the following galleries: ------------------------------------------------------------------ If your teens haven't already discovered classic rock, this could be the perfect way for you to introduce them to it. 12. There's a little blurb in the NY Times Travel section today about Cleveland and St. Louis: http://intransit.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/06/25/art-gets-its-space-in-the-midwest/ Art Gets Its Space in the Midwest By Hilary Howard June 25, 2009, 9:19 am Cleveland Museum of Art Cleveland Museum of ArtBoth Cleveland and St. Louis have proven their dedication to the visual arts with the recent openings of new — and free — exhibition spaces. Yesterday, the Cleveland Museum of Art opened the East Wing. the first of three new wings, all of which will add 200,000 square feet to the property when they are completed in 2012. The East Wing, made of granite and glass and designed by architect Rafael Viñoly, connects the museum’s original 1916 beaux-arts building and Marcel Breuer’s 1971 addition. It will provide the exhibition space for the museum’s modern and contemporary art collection, which includes paintings like “Marilyn x 100” by Andy Warhol, “La Vie” by Pablo Picasso, and “In the Waves” by Paul Gauguin (www.ClevelandArt.org). And on July 1, a new two-block, three-acre sculpture garden called Citygarden will open in downtown St. Louis. A project of the City of St. Louis, which owns the land, and the Gateway Foundation, which provided the funding, the garden will feature two dozen works, including sculptures by Fernand Léger, Keith Haring, Aristide Maillol and Laura Ford. There will also be a 102-jet “spray plaza” that will emit colorful patterns and in which children may play. Citygarden will be within walking distance of the Gateway Arch and the Mississippi River.

The five-year grant from the National Institutes of Health will enable the Midwest Regional Center for Excellence in Biodefense and Emerging Infectious Diseases to pursue new or better treatment, diagnosis and prevention strategies for diseases such as anthrax, plague and dengue fever, according to a press release. "The continued NIH support is a vote of confidence in the significant accomplishments of the MRCE," center chief Samuel Stanley, vice chancellor for research at Washington University, said in the release. "The research being conducted in our Midwest center could have a very real impact on security in this region." Participants in the center -- one of 11 operating or planned around the country -- are Washington University, Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, the Cleveland Clinic/Lerner Research Institute, the University of Iowa, Saint Louis University, Kansas State University, Iowa State University, the Midwest Research Institute in Kansas City, Mo., and the University of Missouri-Columbia. The research emphasis is "on understanding innate immunity, a type of built-in protection against certain microbial assaults," according to the release, along with studying infections caused by smallpox and related viruses and the West Nile virus. Researchers have also sought to improve vaccine safety, identify new viruses and study the body's potential to fight off a variety of pathogens (Washington University release, June 24).
  14. I think what makes it tricky is not using the RTA or Public Transportation...its the location of where you work. RTA would be a no brainer if you worked at CSU, University Circle, Cleveland Clinic, etc....since they're all on heavy transportation lines. A Euclid side road is what makes it tough. With the distance, upcoming weather, variable schedules...its gonna take you being commited.

In a move based on cost-cutting and gender equity, the conference's Council of Presidents voted last week to revert back to the formats used from 2000 to 2006, maintaining full 12-team fields, but with first-round games back at campus sites. Every men's and women's tournament game had been played in Cleveland in each of the last three seasons.
