Hopefully, some UOers can make it out and be heard: http://www.downtownclevelandalliance.com/page/sidsurvey.aspx Future of Downtown Survey Since 2006, the Downtown Cleveland Alliance has managed the Downtown Cleveland Special Improvement District (SID). The SID collects a special assessment on downtown properties to fund enhanced services, including uniformed safety ambassadors, sidewalk cleaning teams, marketing programs and special events. This sounds like this is quickly becoming only a CC project: Cleveland Clinic's stance on crime lab puzzles Cuyahoga County Prosecutor William Mason Posted by Sarah Jane Tribble/Plain Dealer Reporter June 16, 2009 20:49PM Categories: Cleveland Clinic, Crime, Cuyahoga County government, Real Time News When the Cleveland Clinic announced plans this year to build a $25 million medical testing lab, regional officials lauded the institution for its bold entrepreneurial spirit and the promise of hundreds of jobs. Behind the scenes, Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Bill Mason was scratching his head. The Clinic was supposed to be a partner with the county, Cleveland State University and the development company The Ferchill Group to build a combined crime and medical lab in Cleveland's blighted Midtown district. That project, which was expected to bring 1,000 jobs and help revitalize a key development district, was suddenly in limbo. Gypsy rocker Goran Bregovic turns Cleveland's Ohio Theatre into rockin' Balkan party by John Petkovic / Plain Dealer Reporter Tuesday June 16, 2009, 3:02 PM No one could confuse PlayhouseSquare with a Balkan bar. But Goran Bregovic came close. On Monday, June 15, the rocker-turned-Gypsy-bandleader transformed the Ohio Theatre into a Balkan dance party as part of the Cleveland Museum of Art's Viva! and Gala Around Town Series. Horns blared. Singers wailed. And a single rhythm bass drum kept it all driving. More at Cleveland.com http://www.cleveland.com/arts/index.ssf/2009/06/gypsy_rocker_goran_bregovic_tu.html

Cleveland area gets good reviews on "Road Rage"
Another study...out of the 25 metros studied...Cleveland and Portland came up with the best reviews. Even though it is impossible to not question the scientific aspect of this study, I think they're may be some truth to the lack of negative incidents while in the Cleveland area. Here's a blip: http://www.nydailynews.com/money/2009/06/16/2009-06-16_new_york_beats_miami_as_the_city_with_the_angriest_most_aggressive_drivers_in_am.html New York beats Miami as the city with the angriest, most aggressive drivers in America by Catey Hill daily news staff writer Tuesday, June 16th 2009, 8:30 AM http://assets.nydailynews.com/img/2009/06/17/alg_taxi.jpg Nagle/Getty/Getty Images Drivers in the Big Apple are the angriest and most aggressive in the nation, a new survey on road rage reveals. Cleveland: Case Western Reserve University News & Info
http://blog.case.edu/case-news/2009/06/08/kochgift (with VIDEO) Case Western Reserve University Receives $5 Million from Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Charles "Bud" Koch Charles "Bud" Koch, chair of Case Western Reserve University Board of Trustees, and his wife, Katie, have made a $5 million commitment to the university. Their gift will support a capital project to enhance the student and campus experience. This commitment is a legacy gift that acknowledges the Koch family's multi-generational relationship with Case Western Reserve University. Koch's father, Charles Joseph Koch, Sr., was a 1941 graduate of the Case Institute of Technology. The senior Koch was appointed CEO of Charter One Bank by his father in the mid-1960s and appointed his son, Bud, to the position in 1988. Koch, Sr. died in 2001. Bud and Katie Koch's two sons, Charles Brian and John P., each earned M.B.A. degrees from the Weatherhead School of Management. "Case Western Reserve has been a centerpiece of our family's lives for decades," Bud Koch said. "This gift gives us an opportunity to honor the Koch family legacy at the university, to celebrate this great institution, and support an even more engaging educational experience for the future." A member of the Case Western Reserve Board of Trustees since 1999, Bud Koch began his term as chairman on October 18, 2008, succeeding Frank N. Linsalata. "Bud and Katie's generosity is reflective of their overall support of the university," said Barbara R. Snyder, president of Case Western Reserve University. "Bud has already distinguished himself as a strong leader committed to helping the university realize the ambitious goals of our strategic plan, Forward Thinking." Koch was chairman, president and chief executive officer of Charter One Financial, Inc. prior to its sale to The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS). Koch also is a member of the board of Citizens Financial Group and is a director of Assurant, a specialty insurance provider. In addition, Koch serves as a director and former chairman of the Federal Home and Loan bank of Cincinnati. Koch is also the immediate past chairman and a member of the board of trustees at John Carroll University and serves on the boards of a number of Cleveland organizations. The Bratenahl residents have long been supporters of university-wide initiatives at Case Western Reserve. In November 2007, they were honored by the Hattie Larlham Foundation with the Rudolph H. Garfield Circle of Caring Award for their 25 years of service to the organization.

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20090615/SUB1/306159989[/url] Med mart plan lacks lodging element Some think adjoining hotel should be part of agenda By STAN BULLARD 4:30 am, June 15, 2009 A big piece is missing from the plan to make a success of the new convention center and medical mart in downtown Cleveland, according to some experts: an attached convention center hotel of as many as 800 rooms with a development cost of about $160 million. However, Cuyahoga County officials are leaving that project to a private developer, if not for now, for after the $425 million mart and convention center opens in 2012 and establishes itself in the meeting marketplace. It's an approach that suits most local hoteliers because of the dire effect the recession has had on the hotel market. More from Crains:

Survey: Most Ohio college students plan to leave
I agree. This article is not in context of the rest of the country. I also agree this is a bigger problem for Ohio in other states....but there are always two sides to the story. I know plenty of people who work Downtown Cleveland who are not from Ohio.

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
From the blog..."waiting for next year:" http://www.waitingfornextyear.com/?p=13178 From One 23 to Another...Stay in Cleveland Alright, I admit it. The headline may be a little misleading. Still, Michael Jordan was asked recently about LeBron James and his impending free agency. I was a bit surprised to hear that Jordan said anything about it at all, considering his involvement with the Bobcats. But Jordan, speaking to a New York Daily News reporter, had this to say- “He’s made his mark in Cleveland. I know New York fans would love to have him, but you need a lot more components than just one player. He’s done a heck of a job in Cleveland and they deserve to have him there. He’s from that area. In terms of the game itself, small markets can benefit from it a lot more than the big markets can. That’s not a discredit to New York at all.” This is of course nothing we haven’t been saying for months- even years, but it is nice to have Jordan on our side for once.

Cleveland: Opportunity Corridor Boulevard
Cleveland's Opportunity Corridor mustn't be stalled by insular interests by Thomas Bier Sunday June 14, 2009, 5:00 AM Bier is an executive in residence at the Levin College of Urban Affairs, Cleveland State University. Alarm bells rang as I read about the initial meeting of the steering committee formed to shepherd the creation of the Opportunity Corridor, the centerpiece of which involves constructing a new parkway-style road from East 55th Street where Interstate 490 ends to East 105th Street near Cedar Road. It is a major Cleveland economic development initiative. The parkway would provide ready access to large swaths of abandoned land and buildings in the old, old core of the city's East Side. It also would provide a much-needed route to and from the Cleveland Clinic and institutions in University Circle, thus relieving congestion on Chester and Carnegie Avenues. Cleveland: Public Square Redesign
I like the timeline on page 5. Also, I think what hurts the square is lack of retail along it. As much as I enjoy the height of Key Tower and 200 Public Square, they don't add anything to the street feel. Whatever gets built on the public lot along public square...MUST have 1st floor retail. The feel would improve immensely adding to the Park Building, Cadallac Ranch, and Tower City provide already. Lastly, I like bricks...walkways, streets??, and intersections add another great element to a city core.

Ohio: Residency Rule Requirement
Cleveland residency requirement's strikedown could be final blow to home rule in Ohio cities Posted by Henry J. Gomez/Plain Dealer Reporter June 15, 2009 09:00AM Categories: Real Time News If you listened closely last week, you could hear it. Mixed with the sound of public workers slapping high-fives and police radio channels crackling with excitement was the whack of a gavel pounding another nail -- perhaps the final one -- into home rule's coffin. Ohio logs gain in clean energy jobs
From the Cleveland PD: Jobs in green industries in Ohio grew at fourth-highest rate in U.S., study say by Frank Bentayou/Plain Dealer Reporter Friday June 12, 2009, 12:09 PM Updated at 5:03 p.m. CLEVELAND -- While Ohio has lost industrial jobs for years, employment at businesses focused on conservation and alternative energy grew here by the fourth-highest margin of any state in the nation through 2007, according to a study a nonprofit group released Friday. The report, prepared by Pew Charitable Trusts and its environmental group, also put the state at the sixth spot nationally as of 2007 in terms of green businesses launched. And it pegged Ohio as No. 17 in venture capital investments in green technology between 2006 and 2008, an index of how much money channeled into new environmental business creation.
