  1. Fir Street Cemetery on West Side of Cleveland renovated by Michael O'Malley/Plain Dealer Reporter Friday May 29, 2009, 9:00 AM CLEVELAND — Simon Zarumbowitz's tombstone had been sitting cockeyed for God knows how long. But on Wednesday, workers muscled old Simon's marker plumb again, giving it the stately posture it had when gravediggers set it on his fresh grave 108 years ago. 2. ^^ I feel like cleveland.com either plants in negative comments right away, or let those ones post first to stir controversy and more comments. Becuase after all the negativity and "disbelief," there is mostly comments of "so what" "good for him," " he's earned it," and "we got top talent".
  3. Wow...what a welcoming from the PD with all these stories about the new president's salary. Isn't this common for a President to get housing allowances? Cleveland State University's new president may get million-dollar penthouse Posted by Janet Okoben/Plain Dealer Reporter May 29, 2009 09:44AM Categories: Real Time News Updated at 11:20 a.m. CLEVELAND — Incoming Cleveland State University President Ronald Berkman is considering a $1.3 million downtown condo for his official residence when he moves to town in July. The property is a two-story penthouse suite in The Pinnacle building on Lakeside Avenue, in the Warehouse District. Built in 2005, the suite offers views of Lake Erie, the Flats and downtown offices. 4. bring on the Yankees? Seriously though, if the Indians can stay within 5 games back at the All-star break, I'd say they'd still have a chance at the AL Central with it not very strong this year.

Lebron...either scored or assisted almost all those 32 points....it was very obvious that just aobut everyone of those points was a direct impact from LBJ taking over. Man, I am soo hungover this morning. Started drinking early and keep drinking in celebration after the game.. Still got my morning run in though!

Read more at http://www.slamonline.com/online/news-rumors/top-news/2009/05/nba-continues-to-dominate-us-tv-ratings/ NBA Continues to Dominate U.S. TV Ratings by Ryne Nelson Baseball is slumping. Hockey doesn’t stand a chance. College and pro football are out of season. Spelling bees, um… yeah. Not only has bball drawn strong audiences in the Conference Finals, it’s setting all-time viewer records. To give some perspective, Game 4s of the Lakers/Nuggets and Cavs/Magic series out-performed the five network stations in similar time slots. Monday’s Lakers/Nuggets matchup drew 9.88 million viewers and a 6.9 national rating among adults 18-49, annihilating ABC’s The Bachelorette and NBC’s Dateline. Game 4 was easily ESPN’s most-viewed basketball game ever as well as the most viewed game on cable in history. But the record was short-lived as TNT’s telecast the following night of the Magic’s OT Game 4 win averaged 10.1 million watchers and a 6.3 national rating in the key demos. Chaps, Game 4 was the most-watched show on cable this year! Although reeling from the summer transition, this Game 4’s audience closely rivaled CBS’ encore combination of bona fide hits NCIS and The Mentalist. Not bad at all.

CC Sabathia, LeBron James and the naming of the Cleveland Cavaliers by Marc Carig/The Star-Ledger Thursday May 28, 2009, 9:07 AM ARLINGTON, Texas -- CC Sabathia remembers clearly the sight that sent all of Cleveland into a frenzy in October 2007. That's when his pal, LeBron James, came to the Indians' American League Division Series game wearing a Yankees cap. Which is why Sabathia, who was pitching for the Indians against the Yankees that night, joked that he might show up at QuickenLoans Arena on Thursday night wearing an Orlando Magic cap, the team that James and the Cleveland Cavaliers will oppose in Game 5 of the NBA's Eastern Conference finals. Sabathia, who has long been a huge NBA fan, bought two luxury suites for the contest. He plans on taking more than a dozen teammates to the playoff game, which falls on the Yankees' day off. "I just like the NBA," said Sabathia, who grew up a fan of the Golden State Warriors (that makes two of us). "Whatever city I'm in, if they have a team, I'm going to show up and watch. I watch a lot of Cavs games. I obviously go to a lot of Warriors games, Magic games (in spring training). It's going to be fun tomorrow night." From NYC: http://www.wnyc.org/news/articles/132968 Cleveland’s Bus Rapid Transit by Dan Moulthrop http://d2umcibyw4ztss.cloudfront.net/img/132962/132962-0.jpg NEW YORK, NY May 28, 2009 —As American cities increasingly look to expand their transit options but keep costs low, many planners are looking at Bus Rapid Transit, or BRT. The city of Cleveland, Ohio, launched a BRT called the Health Line, about six months ago...with two promises. The first: better, more efficient public transit on an important city artery. The second promise was more nebulous: that the BRT would provide an economic boost to the city's depressed downtown. In WNYC's look at BRTs around the world, Reporter Dan Mallthrop takes a look at how it's going in Cleveland. ......... Conley "In a place like Cleveland, hope comes in small morsels." Cleveland City Councilman, Tony Brancatelli. There's a reason why, on Tuesday, I was standing in the middle of a sports bar clasping my hands in prayer while watching as the Cleveland Cavaliers let Game 4 slip away. Though I stood several hundred miles away watching the game from a New York City restaurant, I knew exactly how my fellow Clevelanders felt, as we all witnessed what seemed to be hope dwindling away in the remaining seconds of over time. Being born and/or raised in northeast Ohio means a few things; blue collar working class background, gray days, and living and dying with every single Cleveland sports team from the Browns, to the Indians, to the Cavs. It also means being resilient and holding strong to our pride in the face of Chicago Bulls and Pittsburgh Steeler fanatics, and even uninspiring sports writers.
  12. Maybe it's not a bad thing if the visitors' center is relocated to the GLSC--just hope it isn't crammed in there. Too bad nothing new can be built or expanded. The visitor's center is greatly under-utilized in its current location anyways. NASA Glenn visitor center could close or have a new home later this year by Tom Breckenridge/Plain Dealer Reporter Wednesday May 27, 2009, 6:00 PM BROOK PARK -- The NASA Glenn visitor center, host to three decades of wide-eyed wonder about space and flight, could close or have a new home later this year. It could also stay right where it is on the center's sprawling Brook Park campus -- if NASA Glenn can find new partners and money to plug a funding gap. 14. Superman-themed comic book convention coming to Cleveland this summer Posted by Michael Sangiacomo/Plain Dealer Reporter May 27, 2009 14:56PM Categories: Breaking News, Entertainment, Real Time News CLEVELAND — Villains Lex Luthor and Doomsday come to Superman's hometown in July but don't worry, Supergirl will be in the city to stop them. Actually, actors Michael Rosenbaum and Sam Witwer, who play Luthor and Doomsday on the television series "Smallville," are coming with only the best of intentions -- to headline a Superman-themed comic book convention. The Screaming Tiki Cleveland Super-Con will be July 10-12 at the Halle Building on Euclid Avenue as part of the fifth annual Ingenuity Festival. well here's the positive news blurb for today: http://www.cleveland.com/ohio-sports-blog/index.ssf/2009/05/cleveland_cavaliers_vs_orlando_9.html Kudos, Cavs fans: The Orlando Sentinel interviewed TNT's Ernie Johnson and Kenny Smith prior to Tuesday's game. Here's what Smith had to say about Cavaliers fans: Q: How does Orlando rank in terms of crowd excitement compared to other cities? Kenny: They're good. I would say middle of the pack honestly. Cleveland is definitely No. 1. Their pregame rituals and hype ... I thought it was corny until I was there. They're at the top of the list right now

  19. Still spreading the influence: http://www.cleveland.com/medical/index.ssf/2009/05/cleveland_clinic_doctors_tappe.html Cleveland Clinic doctors tapped for leadership roles in national medical societies by Plain Dealer staff Tuesday May 26, 2009, 2:00 PM Dr. Eric A. Klein, and Dr. Kenneth W. Angermeier, both physicians at the Glickman Urological & Kidney Institute at the Cleveland Clinic, were recently named as the heads of two prestigious professional organizations within the urology community. Klein, chairman of the Glickman Urological & Kidney Institute, was named president of the Society of Urologic Oncology, a post he will hold through 2011. In that role he will act as the organization's chief executive officer, chair its executive committee, preside at major annual meetings and act as a liaison with the American Urological Association. The society was created in 1984 to enable qualified members interested in the care of patients with malignant genitourinary diseases to meet to discuss and implement ideas to improve care.
  20. Man, I can't believe no one can help her out. E. 4th is a UO favorite street/neighborhood! Where are the forumers who live on the street? Or at least know a lot about it??
  21. I disagree. This Chinese group will promote their product, the Cleveland Cavaliers and their global icon LBJ, to their people...the 1.3 billion people. Billboards, maybe 1 exhibition/regular season game a year, commercials should become common in the near future. I don't find it outlandish for the hugely growing popularity for basketball in China (mostly thanks to Yao Ming) to have a spin off of another 500,000 or more fans of Cleveland, even if it is mostly Lebron fans. Any addition over 100,000 has to have some sort of trickle down effect on NEO, even if it's just merchandise and the occasional fly over visits for games. If this Chinese group is going to put money into this franchise, they are going to promote it. Not to mention, the NBA will have their backs who already promotes Lebron, Kobe, Yao other there already in the bigger cities.
  22. ^^I'm surprised there hasn't been more of a response to this news. Right away what comes to mind is: 1) Chinese influence on the city itself (more Chinese reporters, business, tourists, residents?) 2) Lebron, Cavs, Cleveland being promoted in China, especially in its major cities 3) Lebron almost for sure staying in Cleveland now/ Possibility of signing an Asian player or two to help market the team. 4) More $$$ investment on promotion, players, the city EDIT: maybe this should have it's own thread since this is more business than sports....
  23. I think the indians deserve a shout out after last night's 10 run come-from-behind victory. I've already posted about this possible deal in the "Cleveland General Business" thread....but how about China getting on the side of Cleveland. influx of immigrants anyone?? From the Washington Post: Chinese predict Yao-Lebron pairing after investment report By Nick Mulvenney Tuesday, May 26, 2009; 12:42 AM BEIJING (Reuters) - Chinese basketball fans are already gleefully predicting Yao Ming will join LeBron James at the Cleveland Cavaliers after reports a Hong Kong-based company is set to take a minority share in the NBA franchise. U.S. media reported over the weekend that New World Development Company was to take a 15 percent holding in the Cavaliers, the second-largest stake after owner Dan Gilbert. The NBA is hugely popular in China with hundreds of millions tuning in to games involving Houston Rockets center Yao and the report has been met with great enthusiasm in Internet chat rooms. "It's very clear that the Cavaliers' next step is to buy Yao Ming," one netizen said on Sina.com. "And then to win the league championship, and then to build a Cavaliers' dynasty!"
