  1. Uh oh...move over Lebron James, Drew is going to "save Cleveland": http://blog.cleveland.com/westshoresun/2009/05/drew_carey_and_local_realtor_h.html Drew Carey and local realtor host new show on Cleveland Posted by csteigman May 09, 2009 10:03AM Comedian and "The Price is Right" host Drew Carey is producing a new show called "Drew Carey Saves Cleveland". 2. Did anyone else notice this apparent residental that we lost? Would have been perfect student housing at the very least. On other note, I'd love to see some pictures of what was being torn down we the interstates were being built. I personally have a few familiy members who lived in "Big Italy" on around lower E.20 s and Woodland. They say there are completely no traces left, and I have to agree (most of the neighborhood streets aren't even in existence anymore!)
  3. This review cracks me up. The whole point of Terry's new theme is the Turkish sunset lighting and feel to the place. Didn't the reviewer realize this?? Maybe lighting placement could be better if there are some darker tables than others. The Tiramisu was probably from Corbo's (that's were most of the neightborhood restaruants get their desserts...and bread from Prestis')...still homemade buddy. It's generally served pretty cold...I guess it was slightly too cold! La Strada, a bright spot on Cleveland dining scene, should turn up the lights by David Farkas/Special to The Plain Dealer Friday May 08, 2009, 2:12 PM Lamb kebabs at La Strada restaurant. Thomas Ondrey/The Plain Dealer La Strada, which opened in the fall, boasts one of the city's most unusual dining rooms. Wooden tabletops, stucco walls and ornate chandeliers combine with wrought iron, stained glass and quasi-religious icons to lend the space a Christianity-meets-Islam vibe. To boot, a kitchen, with a wood-fired grill, is visible from the balcony than runs along one side of the restaurant; so is the Federico Fellini film "La Strada," which flickers silently above the heads of diners below. 4. More global influence: http://www.medcitynews.com/index.php/2009/05/cleveland-clinic-irish-university-strike-to-deal-research-medical-devices/ Cleveland Clinic, Irish university strike to deal research medical devices May 7, 2009 by Chris Seper CLEVELAND, Ohio — A deal with a prominent Irish medical school will broaden the Cleveland Clinic’s opportunities in Ireland as in the rest of Europe, according to a release from the university. The Clinic agreed on Wednesday to work with the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland to focus on medical devices and areas including orthopedics, cardiovascular disease and general surgery. The Clinic will partner with the school on clinical trials for approval in Europe and through the U.S.Food an Drug Administration approval. Cleveland Clinic Innovations Director Chris Coburn called the school “the old pros in navigating an international system” with a global reach that will benefit the Clinic, according to The Plain Dealer. The Royal College has several research projects focusing on bone development and focuses on cardiovascular and cancer research, among other areas. “It provides a great opportunity for both organizations to work together to address complex health-care challenges and develop innovative medical solutions that will ultimately improve patient outcomes and reduce health-care costs,” Frank Ryan, chief executive officer of Enterprise Ireland, stated in the university release.
  5. Man too bad they couldn't do some filming in Collinwood or Little Italy where some of this history occured. If anyone is unfamiliar with the story...he's a decent run down from wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danny_Greene ... mostly towards the bottom.

  7. From cleveland.com The Suite life The Warehouse District has undergone quite a makeover, thanks to recently opened spots Sin, Barley House and Suite Sixx. The latter has injected a new verve to the area -- and not just because of the colorful hot-rod-like graffiti on its walls. 8. Video Contest this month: http://www.positivelycleveland.com/hastilymade So, there’s this video making the rounds out there as the fictitious $14 million project of the “Cleveland Tourism Board.” (You know who you are, funny guys.) Positively Cleveland has created and distributed our fair share of videos highlighting Northeast Ohio’s assets from the glacial grooves at Kelleys Island to the musical riffs of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but the region’s real convention and visitors bureau only dreams of having that kind of budget to market the region to leisure and business travelers. That’s why Positively Cleveland and a sampling of its 650 hospitality partners are encouraging Cleveland residents and fans to take a turn at being video ambassadors for the region. Starting Wednesday, May 13, in the midst of National Travel & Tourism Week and Ohio Tourism Month, enter a viral video in the “Official Positively Cleveland Hastily Made Video Contest.” The ground rules? Entrants have just 2 weeks to create a video that’s under 2 minutes in length for (you guessed it) $2 or less. If the reward of a job well done that gets passed around on Twitter and Facebook is not enough motivation, there is an added incentive. Positively Cleveland and its members (who would like to have something amusing and upbeat to post to their Facebook pages) have stepped up to award two big prize packs for the most innovative pro-Cleveland Plus videos. The top five entrants with the most votes and comments on Positively Cleveland’s YouTube group page will move on to a final voting round by regional champions. The final 2 winners’ videos will be played in the Cleveland Plus Visitors Center operated by Positively Cleveland on Public Square (The Higbee Building, 100 Public Square, Suite 100) and featured on the convention and visitors bureau’s website. They will also win generous prize packages that let them discover even more to love about Northeast Ohio. Here’s what you could win... The 2 winners chosen by Positively Cleveland will recieve one of 2 huge prize packages: Package A: Bed & Breakfast gift certificate for two people valid for up to one year at Doubletree Hotel Cleveland Lakeside; One night stay in a Family Suite, which includes 4 waterpark passes to Great Wolf Lodge; Two tickets to Cleveland Indians vs. Milwaukee Brewers on Monday, June 15th; Two tickets to Mary Poppins at PlayhouseSquare on Friday, July 24th; $50 gift certificate to Prosperity Social Club; Two $25 gift certificates to Fat Fish Blue; Two VIP passes to Howl at the Moon Saloon (The passes entitle the bearer to unlimited free admission to Howl at the Moon Cleveland and drink specials for one year); $30 gift certificate to Beachland Ballroom & Tavern; Two tickets to see Little Shop of Horrors on the Mackey Main Stage, June 26 through August 2, 2009, at Beck Center for the Arts; Two round-trip Miller Ferry to Put-in-Bay passes on Miller Ferry; $50 gift certificate to NightTown; Two adault general admission passes to the Cleveland Museum of Natural History and Shafran Planetarium; Two admission tickets as well as a Rock Hall guitar from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum; $25 gift certificate to Ambiance, the Store for Lovers and T-shirts and other gift items from The Only Cleveland Store. 10. FE, There's a whole lot that goes into starting an LLC, obviously.. Not to mention legalities, goal setting/visions, pay...agian not a bad idea. Also, if you remember, this thread was started about 2 years ago..http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,11988.0.html Other people had ideas of being tour guides, bringing in companies, bringing in immigrants, etc BTW I don't think this "city sucks" by any means, nor do most people who post on here. You ended your post in the worst possible way....delete your last two sentences and you're golden.

Plenty of Parking!!...Sounds like a nice facility though City Stars To Play In Bedford The Cleveland City Stars announced today that Bearcat Stadium in Bedford, OH will serve as the club's new home. As part of the agreement with the Bedford City School District, the stadium will be known as Middlefield Cheese Stadium during all 2009 City Stars events. "Having our name attached to such a tremendous facility and associated with an organization as respected as the Cleveland City Stars is an honor for Middlefield Cheese," said Middlefield Cheese President and CEO John Rothenbuhler. "The City Stars are proven winners on the field, and perhaps more importantly, they are winners off the field as well. The agreement to bring the City Stars to Middlefield Cheese Stadium in Bedford will be beneficial for this great community, particularly the children who will have excellent role models on and off the field." Other terms of the agreement include free soccer clinics for children of Bedford and performance and attendance incentives for students of Bedford City Schools. Incentives include having students with improved G.P.A.'s and superior attendance announced and rewarded during City Stars games. "The Cleveland City Stars are happy to have a new home in Bedford," said Cleveland City Stars General Manager Mark Geissbauer. "Middlefield Cheese Stadium at the Bedford City Schools is more than a place for us to play. It offers us a chance to make an impact in the community and continue our mission of serving the city and changing the world while also taking advantage of Bedford's beautiful facility. The partnership with the school district falls right in line with what we have accomplished in our first two years and we look forward to a great relationship." Both sides worked together in ensuring the school district and the community would benefit from the partnership. "As president of the Board of Education, I can say that we are excited to have the Cleveland City Stars join the Bedford family," said Bedford Board of Education President Tim Tench. "I'm sure the organization will find our facility second to none and will consider our stadium a welcome home. We will treat the Stars and their fans as our own and everybody that's affiliated with the organization will be well taken care of." Pastor Doug Boquist, the team pastor for the City Stars and a long-time resident of Bedford, played a role in bringing the two sides together on an agreement. "I'm immensely pleased that the City Stars are making their home in Bedford," said Boquist. "This is a win for Bedford, a win for our schools and a win for the children of our community. For the past two years I have watched the City Stars unselfishly give their time and talent to help the children of the inner city. I am looking forward to seeing them work with the children of our community as well." Middlefield Cheese Stadium at Bedford City Schools holds 5,000 seats with room for an additional 3,000 in standing room and features restrooms, merchandise stands and full-service concessions under the grandstands. The 985,600 square foot stadium was built in 1994 at a cost of $7.95 million and was renovated in 2004 with the installation of a brand new FieldTurf playing surface over the 120 X 75 field dimensions. The state-of-the-art press box features two levels with room for announcers, reporters and scouts on the first level and production space on the second level. The 520 square foot scoreboard includes a message center with changeable graphics and displays. The grounds also include 539 on-site parking spots, including 25 disabled spots, with overflow parking readily available. http://www.clevelandcitystars.com/news/467-city-stars-to-play-in-bedford

Did anyone else notice this? Cavs guard break nose in opener INDEPENDENCE, Ohio (AP) — Cavaliers guard Sasha Pavlovic broke his nose in the fourth quarter of Cleveland's Game 1 win over Atlanta on Tuesday night. Pavlovic was elbowed by Hawks forward Zaza Pachulia in the fourth quarter of the Cavs' 99-72 win. He left practice early on Wednesday and was fitted with a mask at the Cleveland Clinic. Cavs coach Mike Brown expects Pavlovic to be available for Game 2 on Thursday night. Pavlovic, whose playing time diminished toward the end of the regular season, had seven points and three rebounds in 12 minutes of the opener. The 25-year-old married his longtime girlfriend last week while the Cavs, who swept Detroit in the first round, were waiting for Atlanta to finish its series with Miami. 13. That sort of has a Coventry feel, but better. They have the bookstore with entrances from inside Tommy's and the street. Obviously with the colonial arcade, that would add a whole new, unique effect.

  16. ^^I know, isn't the tone completely different?? It doesn't give me a headache and it's smooth to read. If this is true, then this is starting better than any of us expected. Fingers crossed obviously, but hope this serves as a prelude to successful medical conventioners coming to Cleveland.
  17. From Med City News... Medical conferences could come to Cleveland a year from now May 5, 2009 by Chris Seper CLEVELAND, OHIO — The private company that will build and run Cleveland’s upcoming medical mart and convention center will consider creative construction to hold its first medical conference a year from now, a Merchandise Mart Properties Inc. executive said. MMPI officials have long said they could quickly use the public auditorium of the city’s old convention center if that was the site selected to build the new facility. The City of Cleveland on Monday agreed to sell the old convention center Cuyahoga County, which will give the property to MMPI to build and operate the new convention center. 20. I was mostly refering to the fact why a PD reporter would start an article in that manner. I'm not even knocking him for writing the article. On the plus side, he's does put the quotes in about the potential of Cleveland success. Who knows, maybe it was his motive to try and persuade people to continue to push for change....? Again, I was not trying to start a convo on Forbes or perceptions of the city. I'm just perplexed why a local writer/paper would take such an initial negative tone even goes as far to say "you may need to move away".....how does that help anything??
  21. MuRrAy HiLL replied to a post in a topic in Sports Talk
Well does TNT not have the budget for new live shots all the time?? Maybe we're spoiled by ESPN and ABC usually having live shots showcasing the city around the arena. I know probably 90% of the country doesn't even care what the skyline looks like in realtime, but it's still a nice shoutout/showcase/respect for the city. I brought this up since TNT has consistantly not had live coverage of anything Cleveland recently. Hell, I think last game, there wasn't even a key on Key Tower and the scaffoling on TT was almost full...but I could be wrong. Bottom line .. who knows. Either way, Cavs home game, second round begins! Maybe I should find a cinco de mayo bar to watch the game tonight..
  22. MuRrAy HiLL replied to a post in a topic in Sports Talk
yeah...He's in the pregame and halftime discussion for TNT. He's terrrrrible ..and to top it off, doesn't seemt to have any respect for Cleveland. Most recently, his comments on the city itself. What place does that have in a sports analysis anyway?? http://www.cleveland.com/cavs/index.ssf/2009/03/cavaliers_shrug_off_barkleys_d.html Really? You so sure about that? Which part? TNT? Stock footage? who knows, maybe they've have some live coverage this time.. is that what you were refering to? I was a little confused as well.
  23. Wow. maybe someone at Forbes had a bad experience at Case!! But I wasn't trying to start a discussion on these crazy lists...(hell i may even make one up someday!), rather the style and tone of reporting.
  24. I know people on here have always felt the slanted vibe/shock headlines/half truths the PD seems to put out at times (especially with the new editor..!) BUT, today I found a story in the paper that starts off even "anti-cleveland" in the opening line, and I quote: Can't find a job? It could be time to move. What?! From a Cleveland paper that's dropping in subscriptions? The article ends on a more opimistitic note, essentially sounding like Forbes is keeping an eye on Cleveland...BUT what is the point for the PD and the writer to start an article like that for the city it serves?!? seriously? Maybe I'm beating a dead horse on this one, but it just p!ssed me off today. (luckily LBJ MVP, Tribe won in extra innings, postive amtrak coverage, and cavs playoffgame tonight...so it's not keeping me in too bad of a mood :-D) And maybe the author was just looking for some sort of attention-getter. here's the link to what I'm taking about. It deals with another Forbes list: http://www.cleveland.com/business/plaindealer/index.ssf?/base/business-12/1241512432314840.xml&coll=2

Argh! Game 1 tonight is on TNT....8 pm....which probably means more stock footage of Cleveland and Charles Barkley weighing in on things.
