RISE UP Cleveland! It is time. It always makes me happy we have an owner who is not cheap. Crews spent the day using cranes to hang banners and signs to celebrate the Cleveland Cavaliers bid to the NBA playoffs. Cleveland: General Business & Economic News
As we all know...but it is still nice to be reminded Cleveland poised to cash in on Cavs playoff run Posted By: Updated: 4/16/2009 10:07:27 AM Posted: 4/15/2009 5:28:48 PM CLEVELAND -- The city, fresh off the heels of the Rock Hall Induction Ceremony, is about to get another jolt of publicity and cash. "Every single game generates about $3.7 million in direct spending by fans attending the game," says Tami Brown ,of Positively Cleveland, the region's Convention and Visitors Bureau. "Millions more is generated by fans going out to bars and restaurants around the city." When the playoffs are involved, those numbers skyrocket. "We are hoping for a deep playoff run, and look most forward to the fans attending the conference finals," says Dennis Fischer, the manager of The Hard Rock Cafe in downtown Cleveland. Those attending conference finals games are more likely to be out-of-towners, willing to stay in hotels, pay the big ticket prices and purchase the playoff merchandise. In this down economy, LeBron and company have provided ticket brokers a horse worth riding. "The Cavs are the main thing right now," says ticket broker Scott Merk. "It's like printing money, as of right now." Channel 3 found tickets for the first round for as low as $27. The deeper the Cavs go, the higher the ticket price and the better the exposure for Cleveland. "That kind of visibility for city is priceless," Brown says. http://www.wkyc.com/news/local/news_article.aspx?storyid=111644&catid=3

Cimperman denounced Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Eileen A. Gallagher's decision to dismiss charges against one graffiti artist and reduce charges against another. The men were accused of spray painting hundreds of buildings, light poles and other public property. More at Cleveland.com http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2009/04/protesters_say_judge_was_too_e.html

Ohio Census / Population Trends & Lists
How important is this upcoming census for Ohio next year? And for cities like Cleveland, Cincinnati, Toledo, Dayton, Mansfield, Youngstown, Akron/Canton? I wanted to start the debate to see if there is anything that can be done to best ensure proper census info is being taken, especially for cities who have be losing population for decades, but seem to be plateau-ing...and even flirting with increases. How big would a moral boast be if some of these city limits posted an increase, not to mention increased federal dollars. What does everybody think?

Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
Not quite sure where to put this, so I guess "Cleveland Restaurants" works. Looks like Steve Schimoler is pushing for more live music competition at the restuarants in and around downtown: http://steveschimoler.wordpress.com/2009/04/07/cleveland-food-really-rocks/ Cleveland Food really rocks April 7, 2009 by schimoler Many of you have heard my angle of the correlation between food and music, and all it took to come up with the idea for Clevelandfoodrocks.com, was after a late night of jamming with Cream of the Crop and standing around with a bunch of fellow chefs all proclaiming that Cleveland rocks! A few key strokes later, I owned the domain names for Cleveland food, chefs and restaurants rock. So what next? start a free website that promotes our city and the robust food and music scene. A few calls to get a team together and we had ADCOM/OPTIEM agree to build the website, The Scene, WKYC, Cool Cleveland, Great Lakes Publishing and the Rock Hall all on board to sponsor at no cost!! Get a bunch of restaurants to pony up and have live music and some cool food and drink ideas and start the promo during the Rock Inductions week and the plan was on a ROLL. We ended up with a KILLER website (Kudos to ADCOM!!!!), 18 restaurants who all featured some great live music and everyone created fun rock inspired goodies for the menu. We got great TV, Radio and print coverage all highlighting Cleveland’s roll up the sleeves attitude. So now we need to keep the fires burning! Over the next 2 week we will be designing an ongoing promo schedule and make sure all Cleveland restaurants know that they can join in on the website activity as well as start getting their own house bands together for the future Battle of the Restaurant Bands contest this summer. In this challenging economy, we need to add value to the guest who frequent and support our establishments. Discounts don’t work! We need to raise the bar for the customer to insure that they can find not only great food and service in Cleveland but also a commitment to enhancing the total experience. Thanks to everyone who made this happen! Steve

Cleveland: Filling in Euclid Avenue
Sort of a recap of everything we already know...but tucked away from the PD nonetheless: Signs of new life along Cleveland's Euclid Avenue Posted by The editors April 06, 2009 04:16AM Categories: Editorial Throughout the many years it took to conceive, design and build the Euclid Corridor -- or HealthLine, as the Regional Transit Authority's sleek new bus route is formally known -- advocates insisted that this was an economic development opportunity, not simply a transportation project linking Public Square and University Circle. By rebuilding one of Cleveland's historic grand boulevards, they said, the city could breathe new life into a thoroughfare that had become anything but grand... http://blog.cleveland.com/pdopinion/2009/04/signs_of_new_life_along_clevel.html

Great Lakes Urban Exchange
oh no! Pittsburgh is copying us! Pop Up Pittsburgh, Inspired by Cleveland - May 30th April 5th, 2009 by Abby Wilson View Profile In the last year and a half, Sarah and I have traveled to almost two dozen GLUE cities. Although differences abound, vacancy is something each of these places copes with. Our friends in the policy world spend a lot of time researching strategies to combat urban abandonment, and their efforts are critical to our cities’ future prosperity. But I have a hunch that imagination and community celebration in some of our cities’ abandoned spaces might be just as important to our efforts to fill them up. As a graduate of Leadership Pittsburgh’s 2007-2008 Leadership Development Initiative program, I was thrilled to learn that this year’s class is implementing an idea I first learned about in Cleveland - an idea that combats vacancy with imagination and community engagement. Leadership Pittsburgh’s 2008-2009 LDI class is bringing Pop Up to Uptown! A Fall 2008 Kent Magazine article defined Pop Up as follows: ”A Pop-Up event is, as [Terri] Schwarz explains, a temporary use of vacant land or buildings. The intent is to highlight the different kinds of potential in vacant sites in Cleveland, and to develop a sustainable business model for others who want to try their hands at similar festivities. The events, or installations as they are sometimes called, are envisioned to include outdoor markets, restaurants and shops, art installations, concerts, landscape interventions and other fun, yet thought-provoking events…” Thanks to Leadership Pittsburgh and The Sprout Fund, Uptown on the Move, Pittsburgh’s very own Pop Up project, is happening on May 30th. If you are ANYWHERE nearby on that date, you should join us! From Pop Up Pittsburgh:“Come and experience POP UP PITTSBURGH! “Uptown on the Move” on May 30th, 2009 a one day event highlighting the Uptown Neighborhood of Pittsburgh through a traveling progressive block party that engages and positively affects the community and encourages residents from throughout the region to experience and appreciate Uptown’s assets and potential…” http://www.gluespace.org/blog/?p=349

Cleveland: North Collinwood / Waterloo Arts District: Development and News
Altough this doesn't have to do with new construction...the neighborhood is still undergoing transformation. I came across this interesting article from Toledo thanks to the Rock Hall inductions this year.: http://www.foxtoledo.com/dpp/news/wupw_ToledoFreePress_Cleveland_rocks_040309 Cleveland rocks Updated: Friday, 03 Apr 2009, 8:52 PM EDT Published : Friday, 03 Apr 2009, 8:52 PM EDT by MICHAEL MILLER, Editor-in-Chief, Toledo Free Press CLEVELAND - I would not have believed a DJ could spin ’60s and ’70s R&B vinyl for 90 minutes and play only records I have never heard. My knowledge of the music is not encyclopedic, but it’s deep and wide enough so that DJ Mr. Fishtruck couldn’t possibly play nearly two hours’ worth of jams I did not recognize. But he did, and that was only one of the pleasant surprises experienced March 27 during a tour of the city of my birth, Cleveland. DJ Mr. Fishtruck — former Toledoan Mark Leddy — owns, with Cindy Barber, the Beachland Ballroom & Tavern, part of Cleveland’s Waterloo Village Model Block Initiative. The concept is to take a less-than-vibrant area and rebuild it by creating an arts and entertainment district. It’s close to what the Warehouse District is doing in Downtown Toledo, but the results have been spectacular...

From USAToday.com: Indians should contend in wide-open AL Central By Tom Withers, AP Sports Writer CLEVELAND — Across the plaza from LeBron James' home-court office, powerwashers blast winter's leftovers off the seats and corridors inside Progressive Field. With opening day approaching, the fabulous ballpark is being spruced up for another season. Outside the gates, it's quiet. Real quiet. There's only one customer at box office window No. 7, and after picking up an extra ticket for an April 10 game against Toronto, the longtime fan summed up how many Clevelanders are feeling about the Cleveland Indians and their chances of winning in 2009. "It's going to be a show-me first attitude," said George Roth of Shaker Heights, a season-ticket holder for the past 15 years. "Right now, with the economy, it's LeBron and the Cavaliers. Then, it's the Indians. I think after what happened last year, fans are a little more reticent." Full story at http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baseball/al/2009-04-01-2552447943_x.htm
