Interesting article: Cleveland fans need a new mindset when it comes to LeBron James http://www.ohio.com/ By PATRICK MCMANAMON Akron Beacon Journal It's time to change our thinking about the future of LeBron James, time to turn the viewpoint that James will leave Cleveland on its ear - for good reason. Because the Cavs seem to have something very slick and important up their sleeve. And that is to keep James and give him a superstar-caliber cohort as a teammate. The vision - and it's not a pipe dream - has James staying and playing on the same team as Dwyane Wade. Or Chris Bosh. Or Josh Howard. Or Amare Stoudemire. Or any of the other big-name NBA guys who can become a free agent in the summer of 2010. Don't laugh. There is only one NBA team positioned to sign two superstars in 2010, and that's the Cavaliers. That's because there's only one team with a superstar and the cap room to sign another. Everyone has been focusing on the cap space of the New Jersey Nets or the New York Knicks or Athens, Greece, but the Cavs quietly have manipulated themselves to the point that they have more salary-cap room than anyone for that offseason. The Cavs have almost $30 million in cap space - and that counts James' salary, which will go away when he opts out of his final year. Full story at http://www.bnd.com/508/story/445157.html
  3. From the Cleveland Jewish News..every little bit helps: http://www.clevelandjewishnews.com/articles/2008/08/19/news/local/fed0815.txt Federation expands Public Education Initiative Thursday August 21, 2008 The Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland has added a sixth site to its Public Education Initiative (PEI), which sends members of the Jewish community to Cleveland city schools as tutors. Students at the Entrepreneurship Preparatory School (E-Prep) will now have access to PEI tutors. PEI is already in operation at Buckeye-Woodland, Audubon, Bolton and Buhrer schools and the Juvenile Detention Center. While most PEI tutors help students improve their reading skills, tutors at E-Prep will receive special training to work with students in grades 6-8 in both math and reading. Created in 1999, PEI now coordinates over 200 tutors who commit to spending at least an hour a week during the school year serving more than 300 students.

  7. I'm surprised this hasn't been posted yet...on the front page of the PD today (although I'm sure about everyone has seen it by now): ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ http://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2008/08/tom_hanks_signs_on_to_help_gre.html Tom Hanks signs on to help Great Lakes Theater Festival's Hanna Theatre renovation campaign by Tony Brown/The Plain Dealer Sunday August 17, 2008, 6:47 PM Tom Hanks' movies have earned $3.3 billion, making him the third best-selling leading man in Hollywood history. And it all started at Lakewood High School in 1977, when a bushy-haired, baby-faced, 20-year-old actor-intern from California got a weekly paycheck of $45 for doing bit parts at Great Lakes Theater Festival. It was a break Hanks, who couldn't even get a role onstage at his college theater in Sacramento, has never forgotten. So starting this week, Hanks - 52 and earning $45 per nanosecond - will lend his name, face and voice to Great Lakes' effort to raise the last $3.6 million in a $19.2 million campaign to renovate PlayhouseSquare's historic Hanna Theatre into a state-of-the-art new home. http://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2008/08/tom_hanks_signs_on_to_help_gre.html

  9. Another article on companies in NEO looking for employees: ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Get in Sync For many emerging and successful tech companies, the biggest challenge is finding talent. As a community, we must get in step to solve the problem. Dan Hanson [email protected] Executives from growing Northeast Ohio technology firms paraded in, one by one, for TechSync. It was billed as a celebration of technology companies in Greater Cleveland to inspire and accelerate growth. But the panel also shared a frustrating concern: For both the established and emerging companies, the most serious problem was not foreign competition or attracting financing, it was finding skilled people. ..... http://www.inside-business.com/ME2/dirmod.asp?sid=F8C8DDD4679A4F8481CFF990B1FAAEA5&nm=Archive&type=Publishing&mod=Publications%3A%3AArticle&mid=7B30C2FA072245DE9AD5D82735C7041A&tier=4&id=99325CEFD3434B2DB145EA1F4AB18237

  15. aww...they changed the picture finally....
  16. Since this is Cleveland's oldest neighborhood, I bet as they excavate deep enough, they’re going to find some cool artifacts back from the first 100-150 years of the city.
  17. *reminder 2008* WHEN: August 14-17, 2008 WHERE: Little Italy/Murray Hill MORE INFO: http://www.ohiotraveler.com/Venue%20Files/feast_of_the_assumption.htm http://cleveland.about.com/od/events/p/feastassumption.htm Can change the heading to just "CLEVELAND: Little Italy Feast of the Assumption"?
  18. Man, that thing's looking ugly...knock it down already! Is it safe to assume they're saving the stone facade,by the way they are taking it off?? Thanks for the pics Mayday!
  19. I highly doubt they know anything else--hell, we probably know more! I bet the writer/staff just didn't know what Bob Golic looked like. But to also just put "Golic," maybe they were a little confused when the first name was different than what they were reporting..so they tried to play it safe..
  20. OK--this PD reporting is getting worse and worse (and sad/not funny any more)....check out the picture of Bob [in this case MIKE!] Golic for the new restaurant: http://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2008/08/bob_golic_part_of_team_opening.html EDIT: should I email this to Mike and Mike...or would it look too bad for Cleveland?? To quote the article "one of the city's most popular sports figures" and they can't even get his picture right.
  21. Man, if this isn't a new extreme, I don't know what is: http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080812/METRO08/808120367

  23. Here's an article that talks briefly about a minnosota writer's stay in Ohio. http://www.houstonconews.com/articles/2008/08/06/opinion/00henry.txt A lot can be learned, even while on vacation "But in all honesty, Ohio is a great place to visit. The people are friendly, its big cities and rolling country hills are mesmerizing, the peaches are the best you'll find anywhere in the country, and you can't beat enjoying dinner on the island, watching the sun disappear into Lake Erie."
