  1. Didn't see this posted anywhere yet--hellz yeah! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Cleveland Orchestra Extends Music Directors Contract By JAMES R. OESTREICH New York Times Published: June 7, 2008 At major American symphony orchestras just now, as in American politics, the watchword is change. A number of music directorships recently turned over, with others to follow. And several of the new appointments have signaled changes of direction, most notably at the New York Philharmonic and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, where youthful hirings hark back to the orchestras earlier days. But the Cleveland Orchestra is standing pat. It announced on Friday that it had renewed the contract of its music director, the Austrian conductor Franz Welser-Möst, to 2018, which happens to be the orchestras centenary. ....... http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/07/arts/music/07cond.html?em&ex=1212984000&en=75c4aca7ad3a170f&ei=5087%0A
  2. Wilson plays Robert "Fish" Fishman, music-mad drummer of an '80s hair-metal band, who gets booted from the group just before they hit it big. 7. I'd prefer an image of Superman for a while...so visitors and locals are aware of the local rots...damn that'd be cool. In all honesty though, I think the biggest and quickest (and not too expensive) improvement to Public Square would be to pave the road portions of the square in BRICK. It seriously would create an amazing sense of place and beauty, and probably spur more improvements.

  9. Very cool article from Cali: --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Five Simple Reasons The Cleveland Browns Are The NFL's Best Franchise by Jim Cantrell June 01, 2008 Professional football, as we know it, came into existence in 1920, with the founding of the American Professional Football Association. The league changed its name to the National Football League two years later, and the landscape of American sports has never been the same. Since that monumental year, there have been several debates as to which team and community could claim the mantle of the NFL's best franchise. 10. I was in Algebra Teahouse this morning for breakfast and a young woman walked in who was exploring the Little Italy neighborhood. After about 30 seconds of her standing in the doorway exclaimed "Wow...we don't have anything like this in Columbus!!" It made me smile.

  12. IdeaStream Consumer Products Relocates World Headquarters to Downtown Cleveland CLEVELAND, May 30, 2008 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ ----IdeaStream Consumer Products, LLC, a full-scale consumer products company specializing in serving the world's largest retailers and office products resellers, is relocating its world headquarters on July 1, 2008 to the Caxton Building in downtown Cleveland. Currently located in Parma, Ohio, the move will more than double IdeaStream's office space and align the company's innovative strategies to its physical workplace. "Coming from an office above a machine shop in Parma to one of Cleveland's most historic and well-respected buildings is a huge step for us," said Tony DeCarlo, president and CEO, IdeaStream Consumer Products. "Expecting aggressive growth in the future, we wanted our office to be a reflection of our business and personality." To better serve its growing number of employees and customers, the comfortable and spacious new office will include: multiple conference rooms, display racking for retail presentations, a photo studio and multiple storage spaces for samples and inventions. The downtown location also offers many benefits to the company, as a number of its key service providers are located in the area. Furthermore, the new headquarters will serve as a tool to attract Cleveland's best and brightest to fill the inevitable job openings in the future. With offices in Cleveland, Arkansas and China, IdeaStream's managing owners plan to build IdeaStream into a $200 million consumer products company in the next five to 10 years, eliciting a substantial number of prospective job openings. With this in mind, the new office in the Caxton Building is designed so IdeaStream can easily double the number of offices and workstations comfortably to sustain growth. IdeaStream worked with Richard Siegfried from Richard E. Siegfried Architects Inc. to create an office that strategically mimics the company's progressive work process. By listening to the needs of customers and consumers, IdeaStream responds quickly with original designs and practical, cost effective products. By investing in technology, understanding value position, and managing the supply chain through leading-edge point-of-sale tools, the company aligns its goals with that of its customers. This business cycle inspired the design layout of the new office to promote efficient and harmonious workflow. "Our new headquarters will help enhance productivity, recruit talent and will also be an interesting place for customers to come and visit us," DeCarlo said. "IdeaStream thrives on energy and creativity; Downtown Cleveland is just the perfect environment for that." 14. Cleveland decides to steal three 2008-05-27 19:04by Bob Timmermann In tonight's White Sox-Indians game in Chicago, Cleveland pulled off the first triple steal since, I believe, 1987. With the bases loaded in the sixth inning with David Dellucci on third, Grady Sizemore on second, and Jamey Carroll on first, Chicago reliever Ehren Wassermann faked a pickoff to third and threw to first. Carroll had broken away from the bag, but before the White Sox could put a tag on him, Dellucci broke for the plate and Paul Konerko's throw was not in time. Sizemore and Carroll moved up a base and all were credited with steals. The last triple steal I've turned up before this was back on October 1, 1987 by the Atlanta Braves in Houston. It came with Gerald Perry on third, Ken Oberkfell on second, and Jeff Blauser on first. Danny Darwin was on the mound for Houston. After a pitch, Perry broke for home as catcher Ronn Reynolds threw the ball back to Darwin. Darwin fired the ball back to Reynolds, but the catcher couldn't hang on and Perry scored with Oberkfell and Blauser moving up. http://griddle.baseballtoaster.com/archives/998800.html
  15. Awards for National City?? -------------------------------------------------------------- Cleveland Rocks! Posted by John Soat, May 27, 2008 04:37 PM How did the CIO of a rust-belt financial firm buffeted by the mortgage meltdown mess pull out a big win in Cambridge, Mass., last week? Here's a hint: Make the most of what you've got. The winner of the MIT CIO Innovation Award at last week's MIT Sloan CIO Symposium was the CIO of National City Corp., Joseph McCartin. McCartin has been CIO of the Midwestern bank, which has been forced in the last several months to borrow large sums against possible write-downs related to the mortgage market tumble, for about five years. A multiyear, multidiscipline program centered on cost containment involving homegrown Cobol-based applications combined with cutting-edge integration and interoperability technology was what led to his award. The program, known as "Core Renewal," involved the updating of legacy systems with a sophisticated service-oriented architecture to create an innovative platform for crafting customized consumer and small-business offerings and a sophisticated customer loyalty program. A key technology component, according to McCartin: WebMethods, from Software AG. A lot of people around him advocated a "rip-and-replace" strategy, McCartin said last week during an interview at the luncheon honoring his award and others, but he knew that would be disruptive and cost prohibitive. Instead, McCartin is looking forward to employing predictive analytics based on the data gleaned from the bank's new customer-oriented business model. http://www.informationweek.com/blog/main/archives/2008/05/cleveland_rocks.html

  18. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2008/05/whatever_happened_to_the_hulet.html Whatever happened to ... the Hulett unloaders? By V. David Sartin May 26, 2008 05:04AM Q. Will the giant Hulett ore unloaders -- seen by some as the symbol of Cleveland's 20th century industrial might -- ever be rebuilt and on display? The Huletts have been sitting in pieces amid scrub brush at the west end of Whiskey Island since 2000 with little hope of being rebuilt soon.

Public assesses proposed sites for convention center, medical mart Posted by Sarah Hollander May 22, 2008 22:22PM Downtown's grassy malls emerged as the favorite location for Cleveland's new convention center and medical mart at a public forum Thursday night. About 100 people attended the meeting, sponsored by Cuyahoga County. Most who spoke favored renovating and expanding the existing Cleveland Convention Center on and under the malls and building a connected medical mart nearby... http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2008/05/public_assesses_proposed_sites.html

  22. Cool feature article from the PD: Restaurant Row: Cleveland's Gordon Square Arts District emerges as a dining destination by Joe Crea/Plain Dealer Food Editor Tuesday May 20, 2008, 11:07 AM To the casual observer, urban neighborhoods seem to just sort of exist. The same goes for restaurant districts. Cleveland's Murray Hill neighborhood, better known as Little Italy, has been a flourishing immigrant community, and a dining destination, since the early 20th century. Children of the 1950s and 1960s were central to the evolution and rise of countercultural Coventry Village in Cleveland Heights, though its life as a bustling business district preceded their arrival by generations... for more: http://www.cleveland.com/goingout/index.ssf/2008/05/clevelands_gordon_square_arts.html
