Story on Bang and Clatter opening night....overflowing as expected. Hopefully they can keep it up! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bang and Clatter opens theater in Cleveland 4/24/2008 - West Side Leader By David Ritchey ‘This Is How It Goes’ features fine acting, but moves slowly CLEVELAND — The Bang and The Clatter Theatre Company, a star in the Akron entertainment galaxy, opened its second theater — Sometimes In The Silence ... — last week, at 224 E. Euclid in Cleveland. The Cleveland space is about 8,000 square feet and is in a facility that was once used as a shoe store. However, the playing area is flexible and, of course, has a seating area that can be expanded to accommodate more people. The theater is near The House of Blues and about half a block from several good restaurants and bars... http://www.akron.com/akron-ohio-entertainment-news.asp?aID=2220

Cleveland: Case Western Reserve University News & Info
From the CWRU website: http://blog.case.edu/case-news/2008/04/22/global April 22, 2008 Case Western Reserve University, city of Cleveland and Cleveland Clinic make landmark commitment to social responsibility Organizations position themselves as regional leaders for sustainability and social responsibility by signing on to United Nations Global Compact Case Western Reserve University, the city of Cleveland and Cleveland Clinic marked Earth Day 2008 with a joint commitment to corporate responsibility towards the environment, human rights, labor rights and anti-corruption. The three organizations became members of the United Nations Global Compact today (April 22) at city hall with President Barbara Snyder, Mayor Frank Jackson and Oliver Henkel, Chief External Affairs Officer from Cleveland Clinic, signing on to support and advance the 10 principles of the compact. "Case Western Reserve University prides itself on being a leader in sustainability and social responsibility," said Snyder. "By bringing the university, city and Clinic together through the United Nations Global Compact, we can begin to work with one another to address social, economic and environmental issues both locally and globally." The Global Compact is an international initiative to promote responsible corporate citizenship. With over 4,000 worldwide corporate members, including companies such as Coca-Cola and Microsoft, it is the world's largest social responsibility movement. Cities, corporations, academic institutions, non-profit groups and other organizations join the compact to promote corporate citizenship to make business part of the solution to the challenges of globalization. By joining, these organizations voluntarily take responsibility for the impact of their activities on customers, suppliers, employees, shareholders, communities and other stakeholders, as well as the environment through sustainability and ethical business practices. "By joining the Global Compact, the city of Cleveland is making a commitment to take a greater role in contributing to society and the environment," said Jackson. "Together with Case Western Reserve and Cleveland Clinic, we can put Cleveland on the map as a leader in sustainability, which we believe can be a key driver of future growth in the region." Henkel added, "Cleveland Clinic is committed to the development of sustainable, socially responsible environments for the benefit of a healthy society. We proudly affirm the principles of the United Nations Global Compact along with Case Western Reserve University and the City of Cleveland." Case Western Reserve has played a role in the development of the Global Compact. Secretary General Kofi Annan called up on the center for Business as an Agent of World Benefit (BAWB) at the Weatherhead School of Management to facilitate the first meeting of the of business leaders at the United Nations General Assembly in 2004. Recently, BAWB and Case Western Reserve were designated secretariat of the Global Compact in the United States, making Cleveland a "hub" for social responsibility in North America. To that end, the university has been a leader by example in the region through initiatives like its Suppliers Diversity Initiative to eliminate barriers for purchasing and contracting, resulting in more opportunities for minority and female-owned businesses. Other programs include an upgrading and retrofitting of the mechanic and lighting systems in every building on campus and the "adoption" of households in neighboring areas to conduct energy interventions in an effort to reduce energy bills for fixed-income home owners. The city of Cleveland also has taken measures to put it at the front of this worldwide movement. In 2006, Jackson signed on to the Mayor's Climate Protection Agreement, recognizing the importance of addressing climate change. The city has challenged local businesses to buy local to help support the local economy, protect the environment and support local jobs. Through its sustainability office, the city is reaching out to residents and businesses to engage in a dialogue on how to build a "green city on a blue lake." Case Western Reserve also hosted a Global Compact forum in 2006 which brought over 400 business leaders and educators from over 40 countries to Northeast Ohio and resulted in plans for transforming business education that the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is now leading. In November 2007, the school and Fairmount Minerals hosted the first Global Compact regional meeting. Fairmount Minerals was the first business organization in the region to join the Global Compact. The company recently was named a No. 1 Corporate Citizen by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
Ha! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ LeBron is ready for fouls and Soulja Boy Posted by Jodie Valade, Plain Dealer Reporter April 23, 2008 15:04PM LeBron James is gearing up for Thursday's Game 3 against the Washington Wizards by preparing for the worst: plenty of more hard fouls and probably lots of Soulja Boy echoing throughout the Verizon Center. "If they hit us with a punch, we have to be able to counter their punch," James said Wednesday before realizing his choice of words and grinning. "Not literally. Let me change the wording. If they make a few shots, we have to counter their attack." James said he was surprised that Wizards center Brendan Haywood was not suspended for the flagrant-2 foul he delivered in Game 2, and that Haywood never apologized for shoving him out of bounds when he was midair. Haywood told reporters in Washington that he apologized to James. The physical play -- specifically the fouls aimed at James -- has been the focus of this series as Cavaliers coach Mike Brown and James have voiced concern for the Wizards' vocal intent to make each James basket difficult. Cleveland: Cleveland Clinic News & Info
Wow. This may warrant a new thread someday, but very interesting and exciting news! : ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cleveland Clinic plans a 'Farmers Market' on Euclid Avenue campus CLEVELAND -- A farmers market is being planned for the urban Cleveland Clinic campus on Euclid Avenue by this summer. The market is planned for the parking lot next to the Clinic's Crile building. Fresh food sold at the market will come from 35 area farms, including ones planned on vacant inner-city lots owned by the Clinic. Visitors to the market will be able to pick up health information, watch cooking demonstrations and be tested for diabetes, high blood pressure and diseases. Some food could end up in Cleveland Clinic cafeterias. Planners hope the market will open July 30 and every Wednesday after that through October. http://www.wkyc.com/news/news_article.aspx?storyid=87859&provider=gnews

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
I agree there could be a better effort to make the RTA awareness higher at Hopkins. If budgeted properly, I bet it would be a good investment for RTA in both the short term, but especially the long run. I have friends who live here on the eastside that have friends pick them up at the airport (many of which practically live on the UC rapid stops), but I have educated them!

Cleveland: University Circle (General): Development and News
Geez oww, Litt. I can never understand his distaste for that gorgeous complex. If anything, it adds to the diversity of UC. The new townhome designs and location really do create a new visible border for UC. This small addition to the cirlce area makes a major leap forward in helping create a better sense of place and identity for the area.

Ohio: Historic Preservation Tax Credit News & Discussion
This really was an amazing program to help breathe new life in our cities. I understand the state doesnt have the money anymore, but could we at least shoot for a higher number than $120 million in 2010?? It should honestly be 5-15 times that for communities to truly feel the impact and spur new growth. And why is the other thread locked?

Cleveland Browns Discussion
Even Boston is showing us some love: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Brown-out period ending Light could be shined on Cleveland this year By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff | April 20, 2008 The Cleveland Browns are without picks in the first three rounds of the NFL draft, all but ensuring that they won't be on the league's radar when the annual picking begins next Saturday. No worries, says general manager Phil Savage. Savage realizes it will probably be the last time for a while that the Browns are relegated to back-burner status, a spot they've become familiar with since reentering the league in 1999. Times have changed in Cleveland, as evidenced by the Browns being selected for five prime-time games when the NFL released its 2008 schedule last week. Cleveland Cavs Discussion
Other news about the series: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The 'Fro is back Posted by Jodie Valade April 19, 2008 12:34PM Most important pre-game sighting: Ben Wallace's afro. Wallace has worn his hair in braids since arriving in Cleveland via mid-season trade. But the surest sign that the playoffs have begun and the Cavaliers mean business is that Wallace picked out the full 'fro for this Washington series. With both Wallace and Anderson Varejao's moppy head of curls, the Cavaliers are sure contenders for the all-hair team. A couple other pre-game notes: DeShawn Stevenson was booed roundly by the crowd at The Q when he was announced, and admitted that he's "the most hated man in Cleveland" -- based on reports teammates brought back from strolling through Tower City last night. The Cavaliers apparently couldn't afford a new playoff slogan, because they're recycling last year's "Rise Up!" Maybe that will only change when Cleveland has risen to the ultimate height of an NBA title? More at http://blog.cleveland.com/sports/2008/04/the_fro_is_back.html

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
I always enjoy reading the news from the opponent's perspective. From the Washington Post: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Wizards' Physical Play Doesn't Rattle James By Michael Lee Washington Post Staff Writer Sunday, April 20, 2008; Page D10 CLEVELAND, April 19 -- LeBron James was knocked to the floor in the first period after Andray Blatche hit him in the mouth. He was knocked to the floor in the second period after Brendan Haywood fouled him while attempting to set a screen. Haywood then stood over him. He drove to the basket so many times and absorbed so much contact that Cavaliers Coach Mike Brown said James "could've played for the Browns." That never stopped him from going at the basket. And it didn't stop James from taking control of Game 1 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals with three aggressive drives to the basket that resulted in six consecutive points and a 93-86 win on Saturday. "I was built for this," James said after tallying 32 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. "I'm not 6 [feet] 9, 260 pounds to shoot jumpers. I go to the hole and I create contact." Cleveland-Costa Rica Trade Agreement
More follow-up news: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Costa Rica deal spurs a desire for more Sunday, April 20, 2008 Tom Breckenridge Plain Dealer Reporter When the world went flat, Cleveland got flattened. And that's a big reason Mayor Frank Jackson found himself in Costa Rica 12 days ago, firming up a trade deal with President Oscar Arias Sanchez. The Cleveland that Jackson presides over has suffered in the global economy, one that New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman has famously described as "flat" -- a level playing field for industries of all kinds, including the brawny ones that once fortified Greater Cleveland but have since left. http://www.cleveland.com/news/plaindealer/index.ssf?/base/cuyahoga/1208593978262640.xml&coll=2&thispage=3

Cleveland: Downtown: East 4th Street Developments
Feisty Bang and the Clatter Theatre Company set to open $700,000 facility in Downtown Cleveland by Tony Brown/Plain Dealer Theater Critic Saturday April 19, 2008, 12:00 AM The stakes: $700,000. Which, by the way, they don't actually have. The players: Two scruffy, mid-30s longhairs from Akron. They're both named Sean, and both have Irish surnames, but they call themselves "the Hillbilly" and "the Jew." The gamble: That on a torn-up street in a desperate-to-be-cool downtown entertainment district of depressed Cleveburg, these hiptidudes can produce in-yer-face theater in an abandoned shoe store they've transformed into a state-of-the-art smackdown forum... http://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2008/04/feisty_bang_and_the_clatter_th.html
