  1. EDIT: I did a search for "Slavic Village" and didn't realze this was in the City Photos section...didn't mean to bring up such an old photo thread! I started a new topic in city discussion...hopefully for better. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ORIGINAL POST: I was in Slavic Village for the first time tonight (besides when I was really young), and it really was a sad and mysterious place in the same way. Although I only saw it at nighttime for a holiday concert, these were my impressions: 1) So much history still remains -- there really is a lot to see, even more than pope's 3 year old pictures (We got a little lost and we pretty much gave ourselves the self-guided tour of much of the area) 2) St. Stanislaus is a GEM. It honestly takes your breath away when you walk in, but I did get to see it by candle light at nighttime. 3) The prayer books are still half Polish, and mass is said in Polish once a week. How much a populace do they still have to support this? 4) That funeral home must have been rebuilt. There's an add for it on the church bulletin for 3675 E. 65th st. 5) E.55 and Broadway is a neat intersection with old (quasay abandoned) buildings. 6) Cleveland Central Catholic has a gorgeous 3-story brick addition (sorry, no pictures) 7) There is so much evidence of the neighborhood trying to stay alive. A majority of the foreclosed homes had their boards artistically painted with flowers, christmas lights and decorations, etc. Bottom line...there is still so much to save there. I really wish some more of the "suburban" Polish decendants would rally up some support to save the remaining heritage before it slips anymore. There were many Polish-Americans (suburbanites??) at the holiday concert tonight who had never even seen the Cathedral before tonight, and then were talking about returning to show some of their other relatives. Cool experience all the way.
  2. I do suppose in all retrospect, 20 years is much less than another 100-150 years. I'm not sure if that's what you're implying as well surfohio, but it does put it in better perspective. Building for the next generation is never a bad thing, and maybe that is something we have lacked here in recent history (EDIT: mostly meaning 60's and 70's ...seems like we're still recovering from the era!)
  3. Constantino's (W 6th) Avenue Market (E.13th)
  4. I found this very funny (CWRU Humor): [youtube=425,350]J-fyexuGl7M This also got me thinking about the most crossed pedestrian intersections along Euclid. My vote goes to these two: E9th and Adelbert Rd at Case (with the latter being possibly the most Jay-walked per day) . JMasek, has there been any special concern about that particular heavily used pedestrian intersection (especially safety of the students)?? For the first time I've even seen, there has been a crossing guard during office hours for the past 2 months directing traffic and people (But I was thinking it was due to the Cornell Bridge being out). I'd be up for Case getting another nice sum donation for a wide pedestrian bridge with weather-proof escalators and a covered moving sidewalk top...

Thought this was pretty neat. http://www.cleveland.com/living/photos/ Too bad there couldn't be a section exclusive to downtown living phoro this on Cleveland.com to promote the downtown city living lifestyle.
  6. Great news! ----------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.wkyc.com/news/news_article.aspx?storyid=79660 Are uniforms in Cleveland making a difference? Updated:12/11/2007 8:52:56 PM CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Metropolitan School District began the school year with uniforms at K to 8 schools and a strict dress code at high schools, and now about 4 months later some say it's made a difference. CEO Dr. Eugene Sanders says it's very early to pinpoint dramatic changes in the schools because of uniforms, but he says increased attendance may be an effect. "We have seen K to 8 schools go from 88.5% to 94% attendance," says Dr. Sanders. He says it will take a full year to see the full impact of uniforms, though. Teachers say it has changed the atmosphere in the buildings. They believe students are more serious and respectful of each other and themselves. That's not to say that there are no behavior problems at all. Other suburban school districts have been watching the impact of Cleveland's uniform policy to see if it might work in other districts. Akron is the largest district since Cleveland to implement dress code and uniform policies.
  7. Well, we're at least talking about progress now. Looks to be an extremely long progress unfortunitely. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2007/12/port_recommends_move_from_down.html Port recommends move from downtown to north of E. 55th Posted by Tom Breckenridge December 11, 2007 19:06PM Top port officials recommend that the port relocate to a man-made peninsula north of the East 55th Street lakefront. Members of the Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority's maritime committee voted unanimously Tuesday to recommend the relocation, from the port's 80-acre site downtown to a new, 200-acre site...

  9. I just love this video: [youtube=425,350]3UNs6eO_OK0
  10. Man all of this is too pain full to look at...Thanks Map Boy and StrapHanger for posting these pictures. I used to love walking past the "Magnolia" building and enjoying how unique it was. Now here's the sadest thing of all. In Map Boy's first two pictures. I was thinking "Man, I thnk they demo-ed the wrong buildings in the picture"....only to realize that the other buildings are artist renditions of what is going to be built. :-(. Really too bad the VA couldn't incorporate the streetscape into its crappy plans
  11. I had nooooo idea where to put this, but I thought it was a neat story: --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Students install energy-saving lamps at museum December 10, 2007 By Mike Sever Record-Courier staff writer The Climate Club of Waterloo High School has helped a Northeastern Ohio museum save energy and some money. In November, the club made a field trip to the Steamship William G. Mather, a former bulk freighter that is now a museum and part of the Great Lakes Science Center in Cleveland. There, the club changed out 176 light bulbs with fluorescent bulbs that burn longer and more cheaply than incandescent bulbs...

In Cleveland's Little Italy, both the old high school (Murray Hill high school) and the elementary school (can't remember the name of the top of my head) have been converted -- residental and studios/shops respectively. IM me if you'd need photos.
  14. I ate dinner at Teresa's Pizza tonight....They have a nice little set up and a great location. I had a good convo with the part owner -- sounds like they will be starting to advertise this week. He also said without advertising, they've been doing better than expected, especially at lunch. Good to hear. Check it out if you haven't already.

^^Brookings is also based out of Washington. I wonder if that had anything to do with it as well.

Everything in this world would be OK if the Cavs could get Kidd. Jordan and Pippen--James and Kidd.
  19. ^^ lol, what a queer-bait!
  20. I Went West, Welcome! Off the top of my head, here are some of the things you have missed Downtown: 1) Rise of E. 4th Street. http://www.east4thstreet.com/ 2) Incredible increase of downtown population (4,500 in 2002 about 8,000-8,500 in 2007 -- rise of about 20%-30% per year) 3) East bank of the Flats gone! -- but coming back soon as more of a residental neighborhood. 4) Possibly the addition of the Federal Court House Tower (built 5-6 years ago) 5) Numerous building and facade renovations. (Ex: http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php?topic=2055.690 .. scroll halfway down) Other: 1) Lebron James as a religion 2) Billions of dollars of new construction in University Circle I'm sure there is much more -- but I would say come back and visit again soon!
  21. Zaremba does own that patch of green now, correct??
  22. Unfortunately, it's pretty obvious that this has nothing to do with a massive rat infestation. The city knows that it cannot flat out say "we need to get as many homeless of public square and definitely not feed them there!" It does definitely hurt insider and outsider perception of the city when you walk by a line of homeless people getting food at the heart of a city center, and the city realizes this. Since there really is no way of banning people from giving away food on public square...the next best option -- promote some sort of indoor facility with heat, bathrooms, showers. But who's neightborhood is that going to be in...the avenue district?? Like stated above...doesn't really address the underlying problem. Only a temporary "fix"
  23. I really would like to come to one of these...( something has always came up in the past !) So the date being passed around is Friday, Dec 28th??
  24. I really like the Dave and Busters/ESPN Game Zone would be a great space for the 1st 1-2 floors of May Co. in a couple years. Besides the home games of 3-5 Sports year round downtown (counting arena football and AHL Hockey), and decent and rising student population of CSU and University Circle, there should be a fairly steady draw (and how about all those from the conventions of medical mart!! ;) ). Of course marketing would be the key, but it started out right (like discounts to local college students for the first 1-2 years, promotionals at the games, advertising, etc.) I see no problem for something for like that to be successful. Not to mention, Cleveland's diehard fandom--which should be a staple.
  25. Was there just three nights ago -- best dive bar in downtown Cleveland. And yes they still use Johnny's kitchen for 1/5th the price. Altought this is W. 6th. Cleats and that place next to The View are good dive bars near E.4th.
