  1. NRP, University Settlement team on Slavic Village plan STAN BULLARD A joint venture by University Settlement, a long-established social service provider in Cleveland's Slavic Village neighborhood, and Cleveland-based apartment developer NRP Group stands to replace a vacant five-acre site at 5163 Broadway Ave. with a $16 million housing development. The plan, dubbed Slavic Village Gateway, calls for constructing two four-story apartment buildings facing Broadway and low-rise townhouse suites on the block's eastern perimeter. Backers hope it will spur additional real estate development on nearby vacant parcels on the northern stretch of Broadway, which differs vastly from the largely intact Broadway commercial district near Fleet Avenue. https://www.crainscleveland.com/real-estate/nrp-university-settlement-team-slavic-village-plan
  2. Collinwood, Glenville residents plead with Cleveland school district to save Collinwood High Updated Oct 29, 2019; Posted Oct 28, 2019 By Patrick O'Donnell, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio – Collinwood and Glenville residents pleaded with the Cleveland school district Monday night to halt plans to close Collinwood High School and merge it into neighboring Glenville High School. Residents complained that shutting Collinwood and putting a fence around it would be a huge eyesore for the neighborhood. They worried that forcing rival schools to become one will draw violence from students and from the different gangs in the neighborhoods. And they begged the district to not make students travel a few miles to school, instead of a few blocks now, on overcrowded buses or by walking on dangerous streets. https://www.cleveland.com/news/2019/10/collinwood-glenville-residents-plead-with-cleveland-school-district-to-save-collinwood-high.html

  10. Cuyahoga Falls really has added a nice energy to its urban city core...new to the area: Asterisk Coffee Bar to celebrate grand opening in Cuyahoga Falls this week Today 6:30 AM By Anne Nickoloff, cleveland.com CUYAHOGA FALLS, Ohio -- Asterisk Coffee Bar is a new enterprise cooked up by the creators of Akron Coffee Roasters. The new Cuyahoga Falls cafe celebrates its grand opening this Thursday, after having been softly opened for a couple of months. Asterisk, located at 2101 Front Street, is just a 10-minute drive away from Akron Coffee Roasters, located at 30 North High Street in Akron. But because it’s technically located outside of Akron, it had to adopt a new name, said owner Albert Macso, a co-owner of the two cafes. There’s also one other major difference between the two businesses: Asterisk was able to snag a liquor license, unlike Akron Coffee Roasters. Because of this, it offers a full menu of craft cocktails, beer and wine. https://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/2019/10/asterisk-coffee-bar-to-celebrate-grand-opening-in-cuyahoga-falls-this-week.html
  11. Some cool Lake Erie usage with possible future connections to the rest of the region: Bradstreet’s Landing in Rocky River to break ground in spring 2020 Today 5:30 AM By Laura Johnston, cleveland.com ROCKY RIVER, Ohio -- Rocky River plans to break ground next spring on a $3.4 million revamp of Bradstreet’s Landing, a Lake Erie park whose pier has been closed since November 2017. Rocky River received $350,000 from the state and $1.1 million from Cuyahoga County in casino proceeds for the project. Bobst sees the work as complementary to the county’s plan for a lakefront trail and the Cleveland Metroparks’ development of a water trail. https://www.cleveland.com/news/2019/10/bradstreets-landing-in-rocky-river-to-break-ground-in-spring-2020.html
  12. Regarding the signage seen and chatter in Little Italy: Just noticed these signs in many storefronts along Mayfield and Murray Hill for the first time today. Increasing backlash from locals opposed to new neighborhood development. The proprietor of one gallery/boutique caught me snapping a pic, and came out to talk. He called Quattro “an abomination”, and said the city is “forcing new development down our throats”. How big of a factor will this growing coalition of resistance be going forward? It's primarily related to the Hemingway project @ Cornell and Murray Hill at this point https://www.cleveland.com/news/2019/08/controversial-little-italy-apartment-project-approved-by-landmarks-commission.html From the article: The new building would rise on the north side of Cornell Road between Random and Murray Hill roads. It would require demolition of two aging wood-frame houses occupied by five rental apartments. Here's from social media: The appeal of the Landmarks decision that approved the teardowns and construction of Hemingway’s, 230’ long, 3 story + subterranean parking garage, 44 unit apt. bldg. is scheduled at the Board of Zoning Appeals, on Monday, November 11, 2019 at 9:30 a.m. Please write/email and please encourage neighbors, friends and relatives to write too! You don’t have to live here to care! We must continue to make our voices heard for appropriate development and historic preservation!

  15. One day, I'm going to spend some time creating the list of East side neighborhood threads to match the west side: House of Wills: Long abandoned Cleveland funeral home with fascinating past gets new life (photos) The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio - If any place should have its share of ghosts, it would be Cleveland’s House of Wills. But to call the crumbling funeral home with the mysterious name on East 55th Street haunted is to trivialize its story. Though many people’s thoughts turn to the looming 50,000-square-foot edifice around Halloween as they imagine the spirits that loom behind its ivy-covered walls, the House of Wills deserves attention all year. https://www.cleveland.com/life-and-culture/g66l-2019/10/85aeeb239f5112/house-of-wills-long-abandoned-cleveland-funeral-home-with-fascinating-past-gets-new-life-photos.html

  24. From our chatter above consistently discussing non-Circle North projects in Glenville and our previous chatter about the need to better represent East side neighborhoods, I propose we rename this thread to either: Cleveland: Glenville: Development and News or Cleveland: Glenville / East Boulevard: Development and News I kind of like the second one better, to match what we have for "Cudell / West Boulevard" thread.
