  1. ^Sorry guys, that was tongue-in-cheek...I should have done a winky face or some other different emoji. And the west side "finally" getting something was a joke too. Relatedly, you can see the demolished building by going back in time from the Google Streetview link.

"I was always in love with this building. When I came to America I worked at Heck's and I'm taking the bus, and all the time I would say 'What's going on with this building, why is it closed?' " The building, at 10031 Detroit Avenue just west of West Boulevard, had been closed since 1997 until Zaloshnja opened it June 1, said Giuseppe O'Connell, a veteran restaurant worker, server and de facto manager. In an earlier incarnation, The Palazzo was Palmina's Restaurant, which stood for decades. That restaurant opened in 1947 across the street from the current location before it moved in 1954. The city had appropriated its location for the West Side Rapid Transit. https://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/2019/10/the-palazzo-realizes-chef-owners-dream-on-clevelands-west-side.html
  3. Very cool...and in Cleveland: Rock Hall Ceremony to air live on HBO for first time in 2020 Updated 7:57 AM; Today 7:19 AM CLEVELAND, Ohio – It hasn’t even been a week since John Sykes was announced as the next Chairman of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation and he’s already dropping bombs about next year’s Induction Ceremony in Cleveland. It was announced earlier this week that Sykes, who is President of Entertainment Enterprises for iHeartMedia, will replace Rolling Stone founder Jann Wenner as chairman of the New York-based institution, which handles the inductions, effective Jan. 1. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Sykes revealed that next year’s ceremony will air live on HBO for the first time ever. The Rock Hall has yet to announce a date or venue for next year’s ceremony. Though, April and Public Auditorium are usually safe bets, respectively. Thus, Cleveland would play host to the first live broadcast of the Rock Hall Inductions, putting a global audience’s eyes on the city in real time. https://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/2019/09/rock-hall-ceremony-to-air-live-on-tv-for-first-time-in-2020.html

  5. Playhouse Square lost one of its saviors this week. Generations of Clevelanders will always be forever in her debt ... what a woman: Lainie Hadden, 88, bubbly and persuasive civic crusader, died Friday Updated 4:55 PM; Today 4:39 PM By Grant Segall, The Plain Dealer Cleveland, Ohio - Bubbly, witty and determined, Elaine “Lainie” Grasselli Hadden championed Playhouse Square and many other Cleveland causes. Hadden attended the Cleveland Orchestra on Sept. 19 and died the next day at University Hospitals. She was 88. A slim woman with a regal crown of hair, Hadden was best known for leading the drive that turned a clutch of decrepit 1920s theaters into Playhouse Square, the nation’s biggest complex of stages outside New York. In 1972, as president of the Junior League, she raised $25,000 to help a driven Ray Shepardson save the Euclid Avenue theaters from the wrecking ball. She also deployed an army of women and children to scrape scrub and restore the theaters. She once called them “the Augean stables of Cleveland,” alluding to squalid sites of myth. https://www.cleveland.com/metro/2019/09/lainie-hadden-88-bubbly-and-persuasive-civic-crusader-died-friday.html

Passengers said some train cars lost power just west of the West 3rd Street station following the game. “It was jam packed, shoulder to shoulder, a lot of people were drunk,” said passenger Nick Szabados, who said he boarded at the North Coast Station. “Finally started taking off, and the tram just shuts off. The lights shut off, the air conditioning cuts out, and it stops moving.” He said passengers on his train were kept on board with no air conditioning and little communication from RTA for about an hour. “It's already humid as-is, it's getting hotter and hotter, and people are freaking out,” Szabados said, noting another passenger forced open train doors to create airflow. https://fox8.com/2019/09/23/people-are-freaking-out-packed-rta-trains-come-to-standstill-after-browns-game/ Browns fans were trapped on RTA trains hours after the game Sunday night RTA response: “RTA let its customers down." 12. Three interesting quotes 1) The Geis team researched condo development in Cincinnati and Columbus, where they found that developers were scrambling to keep up with demand, Geis said. 2) Historically, developing condo projects downtown has been difficult to finance. Geis said the company plans to self-finance the project. Once the deal closes, Geis expects construction to start immediately and last nine to 10 months. That's fantastic news the funds would be in place ready to go. We don't get to hear that all too often.

Since then, Northeast Ohio has been a popular destination. Among those seeking refuge here, many are professionals, including nurses. An emotional ceremony was held Friday night as a handful of nurses who survived the storm got a second chance to take care of others in a community they now call home. The first round of 17 graduates are already in high demand. "Every hospital in Ohio has told me we have a need for Hispanic nurses because there's not enough of them," Vargas said. https://www.news5cleveland.com/news/local-news/cleveland-metro/nurses-displaced-by-hurricane-maria-get-chance-to-work-in-cleveland

But owner Matt Vann said Monday that the community won’t grant a zoning variance to allow the brewery. He said he withdrew his application for a state brewing permit about a month ago. Meanwhile, the Jolly Scholar is taking over The Rough Riders Room in Carlton Commons on the Case Western campus and will turn it into a barrel-aging facility. The small restaurant will open soon, but it will be awhile for the permitting to be approved related to beer-making, he said. https://www.ohio.com/news/20190812/jolly-scholar-not-coming-to-richfield-plans-barrel-aging-site-at-case-western
  20. Cool metrics. Good find. Two biggest standouts: - Steady increase of students from China - Steady decrease of students from Ohio Also interesting to see the steady uptick of students from California and Illinois (presumably from Chicagoland).
