Cleveland: Downtown: Tower City / Riverview Development
Is there a separate "Terminal Tower residence" thread?? If so, please relocate. First Look: Inside the new Terminal Tower Residences By Jordyn Grzelewski, The Plain Dealer | Posted June 28, 2019 at 05:00 AM | Updated June 28, 2019 at 06:05 AM CLEVELAND, Ohio — In the 89-year history of downtown Cleveland’s iconic Terminal Tower, the only people to ever call it home were the Van Sweringen brothers, the railroad barons who built the tower. That is about to change. In September, tenants will begin moving in to some 297 apartments that are now being converted from office space inside the 52-story building, which has the distinction of being downtown Cleveland’s second-tallest building and perhaps its most recognizable landmark. K&D Group, which purchased Terminal Tower from Forest City Realty Trust in 2016, is converting 10 floors into residential living. The cost of the project is about $100 million, including the $38.5 million deal K&D struck to purchase the tower and a parking garage beneath it. https://expo.cleveland.com/news/g66l-2019/06/7ae9a128835685/first-look-inside-the-new-terminal-tower-residences.html

That’s the magic of the Interactive Garage, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s new interactive exhibit unlike anything the museum has ever put together. The Interactive Garage, which opens to the public on July 1, allows visitors to play actual instruments by themselves, alongside friends or strangers at the museum. Trained professionals will be available on screen and in person to assist as you learn Beastie Boys’ “Sabotage” on guitar, Queen’s “We Will Rock You” on drums or Aretha Franklin’s “Chain of Fools” on keyboard, among other classics. https://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/2019/06/rock-halls-2-million-interactive-garage-set-to-wow-visitors.html

Cleveland: Midtown: Development and News
In other Midtown news, the worst hotel in Cleveland has been purchased: Old Cleveland hotel gets new owner STAN BULLARD June 24, 2019 03:10 PM A New York City-based hotel investor is the new owner, through 3614 Euclid Holding LLC, of the 181-room University Hotel & Suites in MidTown Clevelandas a result of a long-lingering foreclosure proceeding. The affiliate of the Crimson Rock Capital hotel investment company obtained the deed to the 1964-vintage hotel on Friday, June 14, according to Cuyahoga County land records. Crimson secured the property through a receivership sale authorized by Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas with a credit-bid for $3 million because it had acquired for an undisclosed amount the distressed mortgage on the property from a lender, Grand Pacific Holdings Corp. of Monterey, Calif. A credit-bid recognizes the investment that the lender already has made in the property with a mortgage. https://www.crainscleveland.com/real-estate/old-cleveland-hotel-gets-new-owner

Lakewood City Council expected to approve $72 million One Lakewood Place project Updated 7:23 AM; Today 6:28 AM By John Benson, special to cleveland.com LAKEWOOD, Ohio -- City Council early next month is expected to approve the proposed $72 million One Lakewood Place. The major mixed-use project is set for the city-owned former Lakewood Hospital site located at the southwest corner of Detroit and Belle avenues. “We’re at the final approval stage for basically what amounts to a rezoning of the property to a planned development (PD) district designation in our code,” City Council President Sam O’Leary said. “The underlying PD has been approved by our planning commission and architectural review board. The city council president noted the entire process has been resident-driven with community-visioning sessions through various boards, commissions and public meetings. “We’ve had really a number of opportunities for robust conversation with adjacent residents and businesses to make sure the development is reflective of what they want to see and sensitive to what they need,” O’Leary said. https://www.cleveland.com/community/2019/06/lakewood-city-council-expected-to-approve-72-million-one-lakewood-place-project.html

Cleveland: Cuyahoga River News & Discussion
10 years later from the creation of this thread...a new article is born ... from the New York Times: A Cleveland River Once Oozed and Burned. It’s Now a Hot Spot. The Cuyahoga River burst into flames for the last time in 1969. As tourism climbs, the city celebrates the river’s rebound 50 years later. By Erik Piepenburg June 7, 2019 A misconception still clings to Cleveland and it comes down to three words: river on fire. From 1868 to 1969, the polluted Cuyahoga River, which cleaves Cleveland into east and west, caught fire 13 times. In 1969, a photo in Time magazine dramatically showed a brave little fire department boat battling a wall of angry flames. This June marks the 50th anniversary of the day in Cleveland when the Cuyahoga River burst into flames for the last time. Outrage over the disaster led to the creation of state and federal environmental protection agencies and to the passage of the federal Clean Water Act. Thanks to environmental safeguards and the formation of a regional sewer district, the thriving river is helping to redefine Cleveland’s public face, to a point where tourism is up. In 2017, Destination Cleveland, the regional convention and visitors bureau, announced that Cleveland had seen an average increase of nearly 550,000 visitors per year for the previous eight years. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/06/07/travel/cleveland-cuyahoga-river-pollution.html

Cleveland: Population Trends
Cleveland's population flattens near 385,000 after decades of big losses, new census estimates say By Rich Exner, cleveland.com | Posted May 23, 2019 at 12:01 AM CLEVELAND, Ohio - Cleveland’s population appears to be leveling off heading into the official count next year after a half-century of significant losses at census time every 10 years. New estimates released Thursday place Cleveland’s population at 383,793 for 2018, down 0.4 percent from 385,428 a year earlier. The number is just an estimate, as opposed to the more precise official count that will be conducted in April 2020. But the estimate is another piece of evidence of a stabilizing city, coupled with recovering home sales prices and large new residential housing projects in some areas such as the near West Side. https://expo.cleveland.com/news/g66l-2019/05/d1695a54c89135/clevelands-population-flattens-near-385000-after-decades-of-big-losses-new-census-estimates-say.html

Join us on Wednesday, May 22nd at the Ohio Theatre as we recognize this project and 12 others for achievements in historic preservation. Built in 1926 by the City of Cleveland, the Highland Park Mausoleum was the first municipally owned and operated mausoleum in the country. The impressive building also housed administrative offices for all of the city’s cemeteries, a crematorium and chapel. The building functioned in this capacity until 2010, when it was vacated due to severe disrepair.- Cleveland: Little Italy: Development and News
