Cleveland: Case Western Reserve University News & Info
^ And this medical school has added a new $515 million facility to its profile: Case Western Reserve, Cleveland Clinic launch new era of health education with Samson Pavilion dedication Innovative architectural design and state-of-the-future technology to welcome students from dental, medical and nursing schools APRIL 9, 2019 Case Western Reserve University and Cleveland Clinic launched a new era of health education today in dedicating the centerpiece of their new campus, the Sheila and Eric Samson Pavilion. “The dedication of the Sheila and Eric Samson Pavilion demonstrates the extraordinary value that the spirit of philanthropy brings to new generations of students. The Health Education Campus will have a major impact on advancing medical education and patient care,” said Tom Mihaljevic, MD, Cleveland Clinic chief executive officer and president. “Its unique curricula and design will inspire health care professionals to be members of interdisciplinary teams and promote lifelong learning.” This spring, the four-story, 477,000-square-foot building opens to 2,200 students from Case Western Reserve’s dental, nursing, and medical schools, including those from Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine. Students from the university’s social work school also will come to the Samson Pavilion for shared coursework, but will continue to take the majority of their classes in their own newly renovated building on Case Western Reserve’s main campus. As designed by London architects Foster + Partners, perhaps the most striking part of the Samson Pavilion is the 80-foot-high, 27,000-square-foot central courtyard newly named the Delos M. Cosgrove Courtyard through a generous gift from the outgoing chair of Cleveland Clinic’s Board of Directors, Robert E. Rich Jr., and his wife, Mindy. Dr. Cosgrove is the past CEO and president of Cleveland Clinic and currently serves as an executive adviser. https://thedaily.case.edu/case-western-reserve-cleveland-clinic-launch-new-era-of-health-education-with-samson-pavilion-dedication/

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
Here we go: Greater Cleveland RTA ridership hits record low - now less than a third of what it once was Today 7:38 AM By Rich Exner, cleveland.com CLEVELAND, Ohio - RTA ridership last year slipped to a record low of 35 million, less than a third of annual totals during the late 1970s and early 1980s after local transit systems merged to form the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority. RTA carried at least 115 million passengers for each of its first six years, from 1976 through 1981. This included the record of 129.7 million set in 1980. But the number fell below 100 million for the first time in 1983 and below 50 million for the first time in 2009. Facing funding issues, both from fare and tax sources, the agency has made numerous route cuts over the years, including service cuts to a number of urban routes in March 2018. RTA ridership in 2018 totaled 35,006,764, down 4.5 percent from 36,672,559 a year earlier, with the biggest drop being on the HealthLine service that links Public Square to University Circle and beyond, RTA reported. Here’s how RTA broke out ridership by mode: Bus - down 4.4 percent from 22.9 million to 21.9 million. Red Line rapid - down 0.6 percent at about 6.3 million each year. Blue and Green line rapid - down 0.6 percent at about 1.6 million each year. HealthLine bus rapid transit - down 14.7 percent from 4.3 million to 3.6 million. Trolley - up 1.6 percent from 939,262 to 954,284. Paratransit - down 1.1 percent from 593,722 to 587,423. https://www.cleveland.com/datacentral/2019/04/rta-ridership-hits-record-low-a-fourth-of-what-it-once-was.html

Northeast Ohio: Regionalism News & Discussion
Imagine our influence and swagger if we lived in a countywide City of Cleveland, the idea behind the latest installment of Cleveland Connects Posted Apr 6, 8:00 AM By Chris Quinn, Editor and President, cleveland.com/Advance Ohio Conversations keep bubbling up about creating what Columbus, Indianapolis, Nashville, Louisville and so many others have: size, influence, pride and swagger. So, at cleveland.com, 2019 is the year we climb the mountain anew, with a series we think we will call, We Are Cleveland. We plan to dig back into the cost of our Balkanization, the advantages of being a large city, the steps needed to ensure that all populations have the chance to win elected office and the power we might have if, overnight, we became one of the biggest city economies in the nation. Reporter Pete Krouse will kick off the latest effort next month with a series examining what’s happening in St. Louis, which is heading to a vote on combining dozens of municipalities into a single city. St. Louis is not the first to go down this road, but examining how it is tackling the challenges could help focus the conversation in Northeast Ohio. In the following months, Pete will revisit some of the topics we covered 15 years ago – including the cost savings to taxpayers -- as well as some new ones, such as the pride the region might feel or the influence a much larger city of Cleveland might have when competing in economic development circles. https://www.cleveland.com/news/2019/04/imagine-our-influence-and-swagger-if-we-lived-in-a-countywide-city-of-cleveland-the-idea-behind-the-latest-installment-of-cleveland-connects.html

Car mogul Bernie Moreno sells 7 North Olmsted franchises to focus on blockchain business Updated 2:52 PM; Today 2:16 PM By Emily Bamforth, cleveland.com CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Bernie Moreno is gradually dissembling his car dealership empire to focus on his blockchain-based tech company, Ownum. The car mogul sold seven car dealership franchises last week, leaving two locations to his name. He sold off his Volkswagen and Nissan dealerships in Streetsboro at the end of 2017 and a flurry of other locations, including those in Massachusetts and Kentucky, before that. Moreno is a well-known advocate of blockchain technology, a digital hyperledger system used for recording transaction. The technology is still in early stages of adoption, but Moreno launched an effort last year called “Blockland” to try and make Cleveland a blockchain technology hub. He founded Ownum and started Blockland last spring. https://www.cleveland.com/news/2019/04/car-mogul-bernie-moreno-sells-7-north-olmsted-franchises-to-focus-on-blockchain-business.html- Cuyahoga Falls: Development and News

Pilot program helps refugee students in Cleveland learn how to succeed 900 refugee students attend CMSD Posted: 7:48 AM, Apr 04, 2019 CLEVELAND — When the final bell rings at John Marshall High School in Cleveland, it signals the end of the day for most students. Except for those in room 308. They started in this room as strangers from seven different countries just a few months ago — 26 students who came to the U.S., to Cleveland, as refugees. Now, they call themselves a family. The majority are from Syria, but there are also students from Sudan, Tanzania, Democratic Republic of Congo, Iraq, Afghanistan, and more. “A lot of these families have experienced traumatic events and the worst thing that could possibly happen is they make all the sacrifices and come to the U.S. and don’t succeed here,” Vogel said. “So we want to be bridging that gap of partnering with students and their families and seeing them reach those educational and career goals.” https://www.news5cleveland.com/news/local-news/cleveland-metro/pilot-program-helps-refugee-students-in-cleveland-learn-how-to-succeed- Cleveland: Downtown: The Centennial (925 Euclid Redevelopment)
^^Utterly jaw-dropping!! Side question -- is Jules Guerin the same artist who painted the murals in the Terminal Tower entrance?- Ohio Transit Funding
Well hot d@mn. Passed by Ohio House and Senate yesterday: The budget also will more than double funding for public transportation, increasing it from the current $33 million per year to $70 million. Ohio currently provides among the lowest support in the nation for public transit, which supporters say is an important economic tool, getting lower-income workers to their jobs, and helping reduce congestion. https://www.ohio.com/news/20190402/ohio-lawmakers-approve-105-cent-gas-tax-increase-19-cents-for-diesel/1 Ohio lawmakers approve 10.5 cent gas tax increase, 19 cents for diesel By Jim Siegel The Columbus Dispatch @phrontpage Posted Apr 2, 2019 at 3:31 PMUpdated Apr 2, 2019 at 6:54 PM- Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail

One last little update...and more info on the live music: Cosmic Dave’s Rock Club opens in former Barking Spider Tavern space at Case Western Reserve University APRIL 2, 2019 For more information, contact Bill Lubinger at [email protected]. The enticing sounds of live music—combined with a creative menu featuring fresh ingredients—are emanating once again from a former early 1900s carriage house at the heart of the Case Western Reserve University campus. Cosmic Dave’s Rock Club, measuring about 2,500 square feet with a patio, is a bit of a twist on the locally owned and operated Dave’s Cosmic Subs, founded in Chagrin Falls in 1997 by Dave Lombardy. North Coast Cosmic Subs LLC, a Dave’s Cosmic Subs franchisee, signed a long-term lease for the university-owned building. The new location features a full bar, including a variety of craft and domestic beers and 12 taps. On the food side, Dave’s Cosmic Subs shops are known for their varied menu and fresh ingredients—including vegetarian options—and decorated in a ’60s, tie-dye, California vibe, thus the “cosmic” name. Menu items also complement specialty cocktails and feature occasional seasonal dishes. On the entertainment side, Sidhu said they’re working on booking artists and bands of various musical genres for Friday and Saturday nights, with open-mic nights for students and others to showcase their musical talents. https://thedaily.case.edu/cosmic-daves-rock-club-opens-in-former-barking-spider-tavern-space-at-case-western-reserve-university/- Cleveland SC Soccer Stadium
Perhaps. But I would guess it is used less than the Q (which balances all types of events). Like anything with enough notice, I don't see why it would be a problem. It's be a win-win, the more I think about it. Plus, the team would have a Cleveland city address.- Cleveland: Demolition Watch
M- Cleveland SC Soccer Stadium
I'm late to the game here, but if the proposed stadium is to be for 5,000 seats, the powers that be should be seriously considering working with Case Western Reserve to expand seating at the established DiSanto Field in University Circle, which has an AMAZING intimate environment. And it has access to great public transit with stops along the Heathline and Red Line. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DiSanto_Field- Cleveland Brewery / Beer / Alcohol News

The Jolly Scholar to give away brewery ownership (video) Today 5:30 AM By Marc Bona, cleveland.com CLEVELAND, Ohio – Hold on to your pint glasses: The Jolly Scholar has a giveaway planned to end all giveaways. A classic 1970s film, a generous brewery owner and a creative idea will result in five fortunate people becoming owners of the bar-brewery on Case Western Reserve University's campus. Owner Matt Vann announced the details of the program today. Probably the biggest part of the program is that the five will be chosen randomly and will not have to pay anything for the part ownership. People come in to the bar and order beers all the time. But when Vann receives final approval to launch the ownership project, people will spend a lot of time watching bartenders pour their pints. That's because a golden capsule - five, actually - will be specially inserted into kegs at various times on assorted dates. The capsule will contain a compressed deed granting a percentage of the business to the beer holder. Vann said engineers on campus developed the capsule technology. https://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/2019/04/the-jolly-scholar-to-give-away-brewery-ownership-video.html- Cleveland: Little Italy: Development and News

Popular Night Market Cleveland returns to Old Chinatown after year hiatus Updated 9:39 AM; Today 8:57 AM By Laura DeMarco, The Plain Dealer Cleveland, Ohio – Night Market Cleveland is back. After a year hiatus, the popular Taiwanese-style monthly summer market will return to Cleveland's Old Chinatown at Rockwell Avenue and East 21st Street on one Friday a month in June, July, August and September. For three years, Night Market was one of Cleveland’s most popular and unique events. It began with just a few hundred attendees per month in 2015, and ended up attracting more than 20,000 attendees some nights in 2017 with its unexplored location, artful mix of locally made goods and foods from more than 120 vendors, music, dance and other entertainment. https://www.cleveland.com/news/2019/03/popular-night-market-cleveland-returns-to-old-chinatown-after-year-hiatus.html- Cleveland: Demolition Watch
