August 17, 2018 11:52 AM Case Western Reserve receives $936,000 grant to study ways to improve food systems in Cleveland CRAIN'S CLEVELAND BUSINESS A three-year, $936,000 grant from a nonprofit will enable a research team led by Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine to use computational modeling to help promote better community health through more equitable food systems in Cleveland neighborhoods. The university announced in a news release that under a Tipping Points grant from the Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research, the team — led by Darcy Freedman, an associate professor of population and quantitative health sciences at the med school — will conduct a study called "Modeling the Future of Food in Your Neighborhood" that will examine several key food-system strategies. "These include efforts such as supermarket expansion, healthy-eating social marketing campaigns, and emergency food assistance programs," the school said in the release. The goal is to develop strategies to sequence, integrate and tailor these efforts to achieve maximum community benefit. In addition to the Case contingent, the team includes researchers from Ohio State University, the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, and "a dozen community stakeholders with expertise in community-based food systems, community and economic development, food security, health equity and neighborhood action," according to the release. http://www.crainscleveland.com/health-care/case-western-reserve-receives-936000-grant-study-ways-improve-food-systems-cleveland

Cleveland Heights: Development and News
I know it's underwhelming to hear an "extended stay," but the area needs much more furnished, temporary housing. Top of the Hill project may reach new heights over University Circle Updated 12:55 AM; Posted 12:37 AM By Thomas Jewell, special to cleveland.com CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, Ohio -- Top of the Hill developers are looking at adding more height -- possibly nine stories in all -- on the corner of Cedar Road and Euclid Heights Boulevard. That would be primarily residential on the upper floors, in the form of about 285 luxury apartments being proposed in the "detailed design phase" of the project underway, along with further traffic and parking studies. The proposed approval phase for the "Planned Development Overlay" district -- also including a parking garage for 550-600 cars and a reduction in retail space to 13,000-14,000 square feet -- should get underway in the fall. After going before the City Planning Commission and council, permits could be issued next spring, with construction of the $75-$80 million development in the summer of 2019 on the four acres of city-owned property. https://www.cleveland.com/cleveland-heights/index.ssf/2018/08/top_of_the_hill_project_may_re.html

Cleveland: Ohio City: Development and News
Market Plaza caught the company's eye due to Dan Whalen, a 30-year-old Willoughby native who started working in real estate in 2012 and moved to Chicago in 2014. A former high school, college and arena-football quarterback, Whalen signed on at Harbor Bay in May "He would call on a pretty regular basis to check on the site. He was very persistent. ... These guys are looking at this pretty aggressively," said Tom McNair, executive director of Ohio City, Inc., a nonprofit neighborhood group. If you google Dan, he’s a very pro Cleveland guy...all-American QB from Case Western Reserve as well. For example, he wrote this piece in 2011: http://www.news-herald.com/article/HR/20110901/NEWS/309019974

Not sure where else to post this (mods please relocate if needed)...but this is serious damage for years to come for Tremont streetscapes. The Forest City just cannot have nice trees... Tree trimming causing outrage in Tremont neighborhood Posted 10:20 pm, August 1, 2018, by Melissa Reid CLEVELAND -- Residents in Cleveland's Tremont neighborhood are up in arms after recent tree trimming along West 14th Street, Scranton Road, University Road, and many other side streets. “I think that’s a shame because if you could see how they trimmed them, those trees are probably going to die in a few years,” said Tremont resident, Wally Skoropos. “I was furious. It’s gonna take years for those trees to grow back. Our neighborhood has to look at them,” Ward 3 Councilman Kerry McCormack told Fox 8. https://fox8.com/2018/08/01/tree-trimming-causing-outrage-in-tremont-neighborhood/

Case Western Reserve University Spartans Athletics Discussion
Case’s alumni donations have been flexing its muscle in recent years. New locker rooms, Wyant field house, renovations to baseball field, etc... and not endowed uniforms. Not sure if it’s a coincidence with recruiting, but most sports have been way up in recent years. Agreed on the uniforms...another feather in the cap across all sports recruiting.

ENDOWED: Nike Air Sole inventor's family donates $1.9 million to Case Western Reserve University for sports uniforms Updated Jul 23, 1:19 PM; Posted Jul 23, 1:17 PM By Emily Bamforth, cleveland.com, ebamforthCleveland[/member].com CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The family of the man who invented revolutionary Nike "Air Sole" technology donated $1.9 million dollars for student athlete uniforms at Case Western Reserve University. Piccadilly Artisan Creamery moves into former Coquette space in Uptown Updated 6:13 AM; Posted 6:12 AM By Nikki Delamotte, cleveland.com, NDelamotteUllmanCleveland[/member].com CLEVELAND, Ohio - Ice cream, coffee and patio lounging is poised to be the recipe for success for Piccadilly Artisan Creamery in Uptown. Stroll through the district these days and you might notice something just a little bit different. The ice cream shop, opened in 2014 by Adrian Bota, has moved down one storefront to take over the space formerly owned by Coquette Patisserie at 11607 Euclid Ave. Since the Parisian cafe closed its doors earlier this year, Piccadilly plans to fill a bit of the niche it left. The shop will soon be serving pastries and coffee through a partnership with Cleveland's Vintage Tea and Coffee. Expect to see espresso, cappuccino, pour overs, green tea lattes and more in the coming weeks. "Coquette had a good clientele that was coming in for coffee, tea and pastries, and we wanted to continue with some of that," Bota says. "We want people to see it as a third space where people can come and enjoy ice cream or have a meeting and a cup of tea or coffee and croissant. We wouldn't do that when Coquette was next door, but now we can become a little more of a one-stop-shop." https://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2018/07/piccadilly_artisan_creamery_co.html

Nice! More federal money coming into University Circle and the creation of a new research center. A win-win: U.S. Department of Energy awards $10.75 million to establish Energy Frontier Research Center at Case Western Reserve University The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) awarded Case Western Reserve University $10.75 million over four years to establish a research center to explore “Breakthrough Electrolytes for Energy Storage” (BEES)— with the intent of identifying new battery chemistries with the potential to provide large, long-lasting energy storage solutions for buildings or the power grid. “We hope to come up with the next generation of electrolytes that could be incorporated into new, large-scale batteries—and those batteries could store energy more efficiently, more reliably, more cost effectively and more safely,” said Robert Savinell, Distinguished University Professor at Case Western Reserve, who will lead the DOE’s new Energy Frontier Research Center (EFRC). http://thedaily.case.edu/breakthrough-energy-storage/
