More HAND: Judy’s Hand Pavilion arrives at Toby’s Plaza as part of citywide contemporary-art exhibition JULY 3, 2018 Over the past week, a new public art installation has taken shape at Toby’s Plaza: Judy’s Hand Pavilion, part of this summer’s FRONT International: Cleveland Triennial for Contemporary Art. The piece, designed by Chicago-based artist Tony Tasset, is a silver hand that stands at about 25 feet tall and 7 1/2 feet from the heel of the hand to the ground. At the wrist, it is approximately 10 feet wide. Its exterior is fiberglass, while concrete fills the fingers. The sculpture is intended to double as a public shelter and gathering spot on Toby’s Plaza, an open space made possible by the support of alumna Toby Devan Lewis, a local author, art curator and philanthropist. http://thedaily.case.edu/judys-hand-pavilion-arrives-tobys-plaza-part-citywide-contemporary-art-exhibition/?hootPostID=e07cc2359e840ab14d6a20f6f23bb629

Cleveland Brewery / Beer / Alcohol News
CWRU Students Helped Matt Vann transform the Jolly Scholar from a Campus Bar to a Fully Functioning Brewery June 13, 2018 by Douglas Trattner "We're hidden pretty good," says Matt Vann, owner of the Jolly Scholar. "I always say that we're the hardest brewery in Cleveland to find." Jolly Scholar's location, tucked into a building on the campus of Case Western Reserve University, is just one of the challenges Vann faces that his competition does not. Despite being a captive audience, many students don't even reach legal drinking age until halfway through their undergraduate studies. Those who are old enough to drink disappear for nearly three months each summer. And then there's the staff, which experiences significant turnover with each new scholastic calendar. None of that is news to Vann, of course, who replaced a generic food service provider in this space 13 years ago to open Jolly Scholar. He started out in 2005 with four beer taps, two of which were devoted to macro suds. Responding to the rise of craft beer, the owner later upped the number of tap handles to 24. Hard alcohol also found a home on campus at Jolly Scholar, which seems to fly in the face of the whole helicopter parent era. "The agreement is that we want to be the responsible enabler," says Vann, asserting a better-here-than-there mentality. "Nobody is going to care about these students the way we are going to care about them." "Our concept is built largely around our students," he explains. "We have masters of accounting students keeping the books and running distribution, we've got Weatherhead [school of Management] students helping to facilitate marketing strategies, we've got CIA students that help us with packaging ideas, and we've got chem students helping to propagate yeast." https://m.clevescene.com/cleveland/cwru-students-helped-owner-matt-vann-transform-the-jolly-scholar-from-a-campus-bar-to-a-fully-functioning-brewery-with-broad-appeal/Content?oid=19488441

Case Western Reserve Spartans just lost a great man to cancer -- longest tenured athletics department employee: Longtime CWRU Equipment Manager Hugh Marshall Passes Away Posted: Jun 15, 2018 Case Western Reserve University equipment manager Hugh Marshall, who touched the lives of thousands of members of the community during his over-30 years of service to the campus, passed away on the night of Thursday, June 14, 2018 at the age of 65 after a battle with cancer. This past season, on October 14th, Marshall was on the sidelines for his 300th-consecutive CWRU football game, a 63-28 win at Thiel College in Greenville, Pennsylvania, and went on to participate in 306-straight Spartan football games by the end of the year. "Hugh may have touched more lives on campus than any other CWRU employee over the past 30 years," said CWRU Head Football Coach Greg Debeljak. "Every Spartan athlete knew and liked Hugh, and he always had a friendly word for anyone who he came across." He was recognized for his 30 years of service at the CWRU Department of Student Affairs end of year celebration in May. Hugh's unwavering support of the athletic program at Case Western Reserve helped immeasurably improve the collegiate experience for countless students over the last three decades. Hugh is survived by his older brothers Bill and Craig, and his younger brother David. A memorial service open to the public will be held at Horsburgh Gymnasium in the Veale Center on the campus of Case Western Reserve University on Saturday, June 23rd from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. http://athletics.case.edu/general/2017-18/releases/20180615id9fwh

^ not sure. Case Western Reserve, Ohio State are NIH powerhouses June 05, 2018 10:53 am SCOTT SUTTELL Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology News notes that the NIH "invests nearly $37.3 billion annually in medical research," with more than 80% of the funding "warded through nearly 50,000 competitive grants to more than 300,000 researchers at more than 2,500 universities, medical schools and other research institutions in every U.S. state and around the world." It ranked the 50 universities (including medical schools), research institutions and teaching hospitals by how much NIH funding they have received during the current 2018 federal fiscal year, through May 29. Cleveland: General Business & Economic News
This. Cleveland-Akron-Canton needs to not only think of themselves truly as one region, but also, more importantly, create policies that reflect and reinforce this great notion. I’m a big fan of goal-setting... nice work Columbus metro. It’s crazy how far out other cities promote their regions that encompass a dozen or so counties, where Cleveland seems to make the conversation more about suburbs vs city. And on that note regarding the article of future leadership, just wanted to make known I am relocating this month back to the region. I can’t promise a championship...

It is finished. Collaboration creates connection as Nord Family Greenway opens JUNE 1, 2018 UNIVERSITY NEWS Hundreds gathered Thursday evening to dedicate the Nord Family Greenway, a 2,200-foot-long expanse that exemplifies the accomplishments possible when organizations collaborate toward a common goal. Begun years ago as a project to ease pedestrian transit between Case Western Reserve University’s main and west campuses, the 15-acre commons today offers open-air spaces suited to performances, picnics and even quiet contemplation. Most of all, it is a permanent, living invitation to those beyond University Circle to explore not only the greenway itself, but the dozens of arts and cultural institutions that fill the roughly square-mile district. “This project is not only useful and beautiful, but it also advances the guiding principle of the Greater University Circle Initiative: to connect residents from neighborhoods including Upper Chester and Hough to the cultural, economic, and educational opportunities in University Circle,” Cleveland Foundation President and CEO Ronn Richard said, adding that it also will “allow University Circle institutions and employees to benefit from the wisdom, gifts, and energy of their neighbors.” http://thedaily.case.edu/collaboration-creates-connection-nord-family-greenway-opens/

Beautiful: “Most important, the sources said Wesley Finch, the company's founder, is enthused about the prospect of creating condos next to the vast CWRU Nord Family Greenway, a 20-acre transformation of the area between East 101st Street and Case Western's Tinkham Veale University Center. The $20 million greenway is replacing neglected woodlands with lawns, walking paths and biking trails. One of the sources said Wesley Finch views the project as a Cleveland version of New York's Central Park.”

Cleveland: Random Quick Questions
^ Much thanks Punch; it's certainly been a while for me. Good to know about the combinable discount. I was not aware. Fantastic info. For as much as we travel, I will definitely be using this all over the country. Had no idea about this agreement But now I'm a little torn. If I understand the reciprocity correctly, right now I could go locally to the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI), buy a family membership and then use it to get in free to both the Cleveland Natural History Museum and Great Lakes Science Center. HOWEVER, I do want to support the Cleveland institutions, so I'll plan on buying my memberships in NEO.
