  1. Relocating back to CLE next month. Is there a combinable Cleveland institution membership discount option available? For example, I'm looking to get annual family passes to the Great Lakes Science Center, Cleveland Museum of Natural History, Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, etc.
  2. ^ Well, then let's jump to Physics then! More than a half-dozen Nobel Prize winners coming to Case Western Reserve campus to mark 50 years since seminal theory began to emerge MAY 24, 2018 Every October, the world’s largest and most prestigious group of physicists gathers in Stockholm, Sweden, to honor those among their ranks who will join a century-old pantheon of Nobel Prize winners. This June, Cleveland could give Stockholm a run for its Nobel presence. As many as eight former winners of the Nobel Prize for Physics are expected on the Case Western Reserve University campus to mark the 50th anniversary of the Standard Model of Physics. That foundational theoretical model coalesced in 1967-68 and has gradually become accepted as the best explanation of all matter and how it holds together. http://thedaily.case.edu/celebrating-standard-model-particle-physics/

For members of the softball team, it is the bond that brings them together in pursuit of the ultimate goal: a National Championship. The Spartans knew they had the potential for a special season during offseason workouts, and while there were struggles at certain points of the year, they lived up to that promise by advancing to the NCAA Division III Championships, which will be played in Oklahoma City this weekend. https://www.wkyc.com/article/sports/ncaa/chemistry-key-to-case-western-reserves-ncaa-softball-tournament-run/95-557878854

Some more coverage on the CWRU softball team's upcoming trip to Nationals: Moving on: CWRU softball advances to NCAA Championships MAY 22, 2018 The seniors on the Case Western Reserve University softball team had a busy—and extremely memorable—weekend. Fresh off winning a best-of-three series against Hope College in the Super Regionals of the NCAA Division III Tournament Friday and Saturday, the team arrived home at 1:30 a.m. Sunday. By 8 a.m., the seniors were lining up for commencement ceremonies. And now, in just two days, the team will head to Oklahoma for the 2018 NCAA Division III Softball Championship. “It’s quite a week in the life of a 22-year-old,” said Head Coach Josie Henry. http://thedaily.case.edu/moving-cwru-softball-advances-ncaa-championships/

  8. Controversy surrounds 1st place finisher in Cleveland Marathon Posted 9:49 am, May 20, 2018, by Adrienne DiPiazza, Updated at 11:39AM, May 20, 2018 CLEVELAND — Cleveland Marathon officials are looking into a technical rule after the second place finisher says the first place winner broke a minor race rule. Daniel Mesfun was clocked in as the unofficial winner of the 41st annual Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon on Sunday with a time of 2:16:32. According to race director Jack Staph, the second place runner, who was in the lead for the majority of the race, thought Meslun, who was behind him, was running the half marathon because he had a shirt over his bib. http://fox8.com/2018/05/20/controversy-surrounds-1st-place-cleveland-marathon-winner/
  9. Congrats to Cincy for adding a 9th!
  10. While Western Reserve was playing their home football games at League Park during this era, Case Tech played at their games at lowly, but historic, Van Horn Field. Here's an aerial view of a home game from 1935: https://frontend.case.dgicloud.com/islandora/object/ksl:uarchives-arcima00019 Side historical note: September 28, 2018 will mark the 100-year anniversary of famed Notre Dame coach Knute Rockne's coaching debut at the football field shown in this aerial, Van Horn Field. You'll also notice a few prominent buildings, plus all the houses along Adelbert Road and Euclid Ave that are no longer standing.
  11. Commencement speech from this weekend: Former Cleveland Clinic CEO offers unexpected advice at commencement MAY 21, 2018 Former Cleveland Clinic CEO Toby Cosgrove told Case Western Reserve University’s Class of 2019 Sunday about a topic he said he felt “eminently qualified to address.” Leadership? No. Health care? No. Cardiac surgery? Yet again, no. Instead, he focused on failure—namely, his own. http://thedaily.case.edu/former-cleveland-clinic-ceo-offers-unexpected-advice-commencement/?hootPostID=d8e169563fe9dc061b6f8c9b723f8e89

HUGE news out of Case Western Reserve...another large collaboration with Microsoft, this time on Magnetic Resonance Fingerprinting (the first collaboration being the Microsoft HoloLens): Here is the official link: http://www.case.edu/mrf And from Microsoft: https://blogs.microsoft.com/blog/2018/05/18/microsoft-quantum-helps-case-western-reserve-university-advance-mri-research/ Microsoft partners with Case Western on quantum computing and Hololens tech that improves MRIs BY CLARE MCGRANE on May 18, 2018 at 11:28 am MRIs are one of the most commonly used diagnostic tools, but the technology behind that imaging has remained largely the same for decades. Researchers at Cleveland’s Case Western Reserve University are working to improve that technology, and Friday they got a big boost from a new partnership with Microsoft. The tech giant announced it is working with Case Western researchers to put advanced quantum computing to use in creating higher quality imaging technology, as well as using the Hololens augmented reality platform to present the images to doctors in 3D. https://www.geekwire.com/2018/microsoft-partners-case-western-quantum-computing-hololens-tech-improves-mris/

  15. A moot point, but for future reference you can get private rooms at the hostel for approx $75 http://www.theclevelandhostel.com/private-rooms/ Regardless, I hope you have good weekend in the CLE! Buy yourselves some CLE sweatshirts :)
  16. Definitely stay at the Cleveland hostel.
  17. Well for all the beautiful mansions demoed to build those ugly Case buildings, I bet they're trying to at least hold on to the two remaining original structures.
  18. Three big news stories today for CWRU varsity athletics, repping Cleveland, OH sports very well today:) 1) First time in the playoffs in 17 years, first time winning the regional playoffs: CWRU Softball Captures Notre Dame Regional; Heading to NCAA Super Regional Posted: May 13, 2018 The Case Western Reserve University softball team will be playing in the Super Regional of the NCAA Championships for the first time in program history after sweeping the Ohio Northern University Polar Bears on Sunday in the Notre Dame Regional. The Spartans started the day by shutting out the Polar Bears 5-0, and then won the second contest by a score of 5-1. CWRU is now 35-9 on the year, while ONU finished out its season at 32-11. The Spartans will now await the winner of the Hope College vs. Calvin College Regional Championship game that is being held in Holland, Michigan tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. The winner of that regional will play the Spartans in the NCAA Super Regional at a site to be determined from Friday, May 18th through Saturday, May 19th. http://athletics.case.edu/sports/sball/2017-18/releases/20180513sdbntm 2) CWRU baseball sweep the University of Chicago today to end the regular season. This means, against those fellow nerd research institution, CWRU's series records were: vs Brandeis 4-0 vs University of Chicago 3-0 vs University of Rochester 1-0 vs Emory 3-1 vs New York University 3-1 vs Washington of St. Louis 2-2 CWRU Baseball Sweeps Chicago to Conclude Regular Season Posted: May 13, 2018 The Case Western Reserve University baseball team ended its regular season on a high note on Sunday, sweeping a doubleheader against the University of Chicago with a 7-6 walk-off victory in the opening game of the day, and following with an 11-4 win in game two of the doubleheader at Nobby's Ballpark in Cleveland, Ohio. The wins give the Spartans a sweep of the three-game series against Chicago, as the team ended the year on a four-game winning streak. Case Western Reserve stands at 29-10 on the season, while Chicago completed its 2018 campaign with a 26-13 record. http://athletics.case.edu/sports/bsb/2017-18/releases/20180513ph385u 3) CWRU football defeated the Milano Rhinos 41-6 in Italy today, before the game was called for a thunderstorm in the second half CWRU Spartans Efficiently Dominate in Italy The Case Western Reserve University Spartans started fast and decisively sprinting to a 28-0 first quarter lead versus the Milano Rhinos then cruised to a 41-6 victory in Limbiate, Italy just north of Milan. The game was shortened as a thunderstorm struck equally decisively early in the 4th quarter with the Spartans threatening to score inside the Rhinos 10-yard line. The international friendly was a rematch of two clubs that met in 2015. The Rhinos, who had recently won four games in a row to vault into playoff position in the Italian Football League, were not able to handle the precision and speed of the Spartans who scored on every possession in the first half and added a defensive ‘pick-6’ as well. http://americanfootballworldwide.com/featured/cwru-spartans-efficiently-dominate-italy/
  19. Demoing the top of Cedar Hill is fascinating to me, as it currently holds a number of the university's fraternities and sororities, plus the mentioned dorms. Pure speculation, but those available Magnolia Drive mansions (being university owned) would certainly work for a Greek life relocation.

Well Yabo-dabba-doo, get to it! Ditto! You're in charge, kind sir. BTW, you guys definitely checked out my improvements on the Cleveland Navbox. One feature I love about wiki is it allows you to access page views. 21. Here is the Facebook page link: https://www.facebook.com/CLEChainReaction/ Old Brooklyn set to succeed Slavic Village as the next Cleveland Chain Reaction neighborhood KARIN CONNELLY RICE | FRIDAY, MAY 11, 2018 Businesses like Old Brooklyn Cheese, City Diner, The Noun, and Vino Veritas Winery are just a few that have popped up in Old Brooklyn in the last 16 months—with several more including Lilly Handmade Chocolates, Atmoscapture, and Metropolitan Coffee set to join their ranks soon. Now, thanks to Cleveland Chain Reaction, five more businesses will set up shop this year. This morning, on Fox 8’s “Kickin’ It with Kenny” morning segments, officials announced that Old Brooklyn will be the location of this year’s business competition. Old Brooklyn beat out Midtown, Shaker Square/Larchmere, and Collinwood to be the investment neighborhood. “We’re excited about it because it builds off the already-existing momentum of forward progress we’ve made over the last few years,” says Jeff Verespej, executive director of Old Brooklyn Community Development Corporation (OBCDC). He cites Drink Bar and Grill and Cake Royale as companies that spurred the more-recent arrivals like Sabor Miami and Coffee, Coffee, Coffee. -- So is Old Brooklyn Cleveland’s “hot” new neighborhood? While Verespej is reticent to use that exact phrasing, he feels confident and excited about the direction Old Brooklyn is heading. “Our growth is undeniable and should be recognized,” says Verespej. "Our housing prices have increased significantly, and the neighborhood has seen more small business growth in the last couple years than it has in generations.” http://www.freshwatercleveland.com/breaking-ground/ChainReactionTwo051118.aspx
  22. ^ For those unfamiliar with the high school, here's a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OHIZq_4FpSw Looks a bit expense to run...
  23. These mansions are absolutely gorgeous. Here is the CWRU campus map (side note: the new CWRU medical school and dental school are on the map). I wonder if CWRU will try to snag these properties, especially at presumably a lower price? https://case.edu/administration/cpfm/CWRU-map-0317.pdf Any of the mansions would make for incredible Bed and Breakfasts, since most have already been remodeled for student boarding...or VA Hospital needs them for short term / long term residential?...or we need an UrbanOhio clubhouse...?
  24. CWRU football's spring football game is against the Milano Rhinos in Italy next week, one of the top teams in the Italian Football League (IFL)...not too bad of a spring game. CWRU SPARTANS TO DEPART FOR NORTHERN ITALY AND SWITZERLAND The CWRU Spartans, who put together possibly the most successful and certainly one of their best seasons of college football in their university’s history, will be departing on Friday for Europe. Over a nine-day, eight-night journey they will take in the breath-taking beauty of Lake Como, Italy and equally impressive sites in Switzerland consisting of Lucerne, Interlaken, Bern and Zurich, Switzerland. Early in their journey the Spartans will play an international friendly contest against the highly successful and proud Milano Rhinos American Football Club. The Rhinos were champions of the Italian Football League a year ago and finished second last season. http://americanfootballworldwide.com/featured/cwru-spartans-depart-northern-italy-switzerland/
