  1. Well no local media coverage of Ohio's two NCAA DIII nationally ranked teams facing off today, but today is the day: https://mobile.twitter.com/Doc19Wooster/status/989109695251132416 https://mobile.twitter.com/caseathletics/status/988869595078504448
  2. Definitely the correct thread. We somehow lost the "Cleveland in the Movies / TV" thread, and it was combined with the Cleveland film industry thread. So this thread has become a catch all for both industry / business and the occasional Cleveland shout outs that show up in film / tv. On that note, I have no idea to the answer of your question. Hope you spotted some juicy intel!
  3. Anyone else watching the new show "Barry" on HBO? Bill Hader dons WMMS T-shirt in HBO's 'Barry' Updated Mar 20; Posted Mar 20 By Joey Morona, cleveland.com jmoronaCleveland[/member].com CLEVELAND, Ohio -- If you watch television solely for the Cleveland references, be sure to add HBO's "Barry" to your DVR queue. The series stars Bill Hader ("Saturday Night Live") as a low-rent hitman from Cleveland sent to Los Angeles to eliminate an aspiring actor who is having an affair with a Chechen mobster's wife. Along the way, Barry takes an acting class taught by Henry Winkler's character, falls it love with it, and then tries to extricate himself from his old life. Got all that? Anyway, in a clip posted on HBO's Twitter account, Barry is clearly seen wearing a vintage WMMS T-shirt with the classic Buzzard logo on it. How's that for authenticity! http://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2018/03/bill_hader_dons_wmms_t-shirt_i.html

  7. More to come... Cleveland and Canton to hear next month if they'll host the NFL draft in 2019 or 2020 Updated 12:40 PM; Posted 11:11 AM By Mary Kay Cabot, cleveland.com CLEVELAND, Ohio -- It's said that for win-starved Browns fans, the NFL Draft is their Super Bowl. Well, if that's the case, the Browns could be hosting the Super Bowl next year. The combined cities of Cleveland and Canton are one of five finalists to host the draft either in 2019 or 2020, and will find out at the NFL spring league meeting May 21-23 in Atlanta. The theme for this region's bid is "Bring it Home'' -- to the birthplace of the National Football League, which was founded here in 1920. If the Cleveland and Canton are awarded the draft for 2019, it would coincide with the 100-year anniversary of the NFL, and if it's 2020, it will coincide with the league's centennial celebration. The two cities, along with the Browns, The Greater Cleveland Sports Commission and the Pro Football Hall of Fame have joined forces on the bid. http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2018/04/cleveland_and_canton_hoping_br.html#incart_2box_sports

Nice! My four favorite fun facts of the Hudson area / Western Reserve College early history: 1) Loomis Observatory (built 1838) is the oldest observatory in the United States still in its original location. Your photos just missed it! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loomis_Observatory 2) Being extremely pro-abolitionist, Western Reserve was the first school in Ohio and west of the Appalachian Mountains to enroll (1832) and graduate (1836) an African American student, John Sykes Fayette. https://books.google.com/books?id=M1VpMW2Dr-EC&pg=PA100&lpg=PA100&dq=John+Sykes+Fayette&source=bl&ots=E_eBcZodeg&sig=5lQAcAh9CbTzIvjyXlH21C1sGm8&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwi7nMOr9dDaAhXKqlQKHUOPCPMQ6AEINDAC#v=onepage&q=John%20Sykes%20Fayette&f=false 3) In 1854, Frederick Douglass gave the Western Reserve commencement speech http://www.libraryweb.org/~digitized/books/Claims_of_the_Negro.pdf 4) First curveball in college baseball was thrown by Clarence Emir Allen in the 1870s at Western Reserve https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clarence_Emir_Allen
  10. Some great pictures from a few days ago. Nord Family Greenway nears completion in University Circle (photos) Updated Apr 19; Posted Apr 19 By Lisa DeJong, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A huge field of green sod, new plantings and park benches are all hopeful signs that the Nord Family Greenway will be opening soon this spring in University Circle. The $15-million park project is a 2,200-foot long and 300-foot-wide stretch of pathways, trees and expansive lawn areas. The new urban landscape connects Case Western Reserve University, cutting through the Cleveland Museum of Art's Fine Arts Garden area, then to the Maltz Performing Arts Center in The Temple - Tifereth Israel, across 105th Street. http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2018/04/nord_family_greenway_nears_com.html
  11. Perhaps some beer tourism for people coming to Cleveland to get this?? Northeast Ohio becomes 1st place in U.S. to drink famed Airborne beer Updated 4:43 AM; Posted 4:43 AM By Marc Bona, cleveland.com mbonaCleveland[/member].com CLEVELAND, Ohio - Cleveland-based Sixth City Distribution has struck a deal with a Belgian importer to bring in nine beers - including one with a special back story dating to an American serviceman's actions in World War II. With the deal, Northeast Ohio becomes the first market in the United States for De Pinte Imports, said Jeff Draeger of Sixth City Distribution. Limited distribution will begin Monday, April 23. Sixth City's distribution extends to downtown Cleveland and as far east as Chagrin Falls-Mentor, south to Akron and west to Sandusky. And while the initial distribution will be very limited, Draeger said it's a coup for Cleveland. Airborne beer pays tribute to an American serviceman's actions in World War II. "It's easy to say 'This distributor is bringing in a Belgian tripel'," he said. "That might not resonate with people too much. But the Airborne beer, that's captivating." http://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2018/04/northeast_ohio_becomes_1st_pla.html

  14. My comment on today's story: Amazing work and story, John! I'm am still shocked Record Rendezvous still sits empty with it's historical signifacance and location next to many Cleveland attractions. How has the Rock Hall not bought it and restored it or made it into a Rock Hall Annex? It almost reminds me of the first Starbucks store location that sits next to Pike's Place Market in Seattle. It was restored to look like it did in the early 1970s. People will come down to the area for the market and park but wait in line to buy coffee at the first Starbucks. My idea - tourists could still buy music at a restored Record Rendezvous, while it is also turned into gift shop/museum/ special event space. Is there even a historical marker there? Or eligible for "historic tax credits?"...seems pretty historic to me, tied to Cleveland's history and identity. I typed this while drinking out of my souvenir "First Starbucks Mug" from the Seattle store. Heck, the Rock Hall should buy the entire block as the Rock Hall Annex and make RR the showpiece.

Only by birth. Khloe was moved into Cleveland, but I suspect the family will be flying her and her daughter back to LA immediately...just hoping this drama doesn't effect the Cavs playoff run.

First time posting a TMZ or "Bustle" on Urbanohio...or anywhere I think: Khloe Kardashian Gives Birth to Baby Girl!! Tristan Was There Khloe Kardashian has given birth to her first kid ... TMZ has learned. Khloe delivered a baby girl early Thursday morning -- around 4 AM EDT -- at a hospital outside Cleveland ... according to our Kardashian sources. We're told the little girl does not have a name yet. Kourtney, Kim, Kris and Khloe's BFF Malika were by her side during the birth. Tristan Thompson was also there. This is Khloe and the Cavaliers star's first baby together, but, of course, it comes smack in the middle of a tumultuous time for the couple. http://www.tmz.com/2018/04/12/khloe-kardashian-gives-birth-baby-girl/ Will Khloe Kardashian Still Live In Cleveland? She Just Had Her Baby In The Ohio City Big news: On Thursday, April 12, TMZ reported that Khloe Kardashian gave birth to a baby girl at a Cleveland, Ohio area hospital. (Bustle reached out to Kardashian's rep for comment, but did not receive an immediate response.) But will Khloe still live in Cleveland after the birth of her child? She may not remain in the city for long, according to several reports from earlier this week. According to TMZ, Khloe gave birth to a baby girl at a hospital outside of Cleveland at around 4 a.m. ET. TMZ reported that the baby's father, NBA player Tristan Thompson, was there, as well as Kim Kardashian, Kourtney Kardashian, and Khloe's best friend Malika Haqq were there. The newborn's name has not yet been publicly announced by Khloe, nor has the birth of her daughter been officially announced or confirmed. https://www.bustle.com/p/will-khloe-kardashian-still-live-in-cleveland-she-just-had-her-baby-in-the-ohio-city-8771972
  22. Historic electric building reinvented as Mueller Lofts: Apartment of the week Updated 5:22 AM; Posted 4:02 AM By Anne Nickoloff, cleveland.com anickoloffCleveland[/member].com CLEVELAND, Ohio - Before it became an apartment complex, the Mueller Electric building was the working place of Cleveland electrical engineer Ralph S. Mueller. Mueller became famous for designing the alligator clip, which became his business--producing about 100,000 clips and 33,000 insulators daily in the '60s. Mueller died, and the business was sold off. But now, the Mueller Electric building, located in Cleveland's AsiaTown neighborhood, lives on as a fancy apartment complex: Mueller Lofts. The apartments aren't open yet--the building is slated for an opening in June 2018. Mueller Lofts are a part of a rehabilitation organization called Sustainable Community Associates, which previously fixed up the Fairmount Creamery and Wagner Awning apartment buildings in Tremont. Mueller Lofts will offer massive windows and high ceilings in every unit, whether it's a three-bedroom apartment or an efficiency studio. Residents can enjoy in-unit washers and driers and stainless steel kitchen appliances. http://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2018/04/historic_electric_building_rei.html

  25. NOOO! One of the most under appreciated places in Uptown/University Circle and Cleveland: --- Coquette Patisserie To Say “Au Revoir” To our loyal customers: We have some news to share with you. We’ve decided the time is right to bring the bricks-and-mortar chapter of Coquette Patisserie to a close. The commitment and sacrifice required to nurture and grow a hospitality business are hard to quantify. While raising two young children, we’ve given everything we had to Coquette to help make the up-and-coming Uptown District of University Circle a destination. We remained committed to our concept: to offer the highest quality product, unparalleled craftsmanship, and the most remarkable experience possible. We couldn’t be prouder of what we accomplished; but, after careful evaluation, it’s time to end this chapter. Thank you for your belief in and support of a business that grew from a college student’s dream to an amazing adventure. Your belief in us was nothing short of amazing. You embraced a concept unlike any other in Cleveland and always trusted us to challenge your palette with highly innovative and precisely composed food. Time and again, your encouragement and patronage made the investment into this small business so rewarding. Being part of the last four years of Cleveland’s history has been a privilege. In honor of you, our loyal customers, we will host a day-long celebration – “Un Fête d’Adieu” – on our last day of business, April 28, from 10 am until midnight (or until the shelves are bare). We invite you to savor one last taste of Chef Britt Culey’s sweet treats and savory creations at the shop. If you’ve placed a custom order for a private event following the closure of the pastry shop, there’s no need to worry. All orders placed by April 28 will be fulfilled. Gift cards must be redeemed by close of business on April 28. While it’s time to close this chapter in the story of Coquette and take time to determine what the future holds, we hope that if Coquette returns to Cleveland down road, you’ll consider giving us another try. From the bottom of our hearts…Merci Beaucoup! - Britt & Shane Culey http://www.coquettepatisserie.com
