Cleveland: Scranton Peninsula: Development and News
^ There is a lot of good info and quotes from that GLBC article...especially regarding a new Cleveland urban neighborhood: The Geis-Grant-Weiner property, across the river from Tower City, is vacant and overgrown. But the developers envision a mixed-use transformation that's heavy on housing and light on retail. The Great Lakes facilities would go beyond manufacturing to include a consumer-facing component, such as a taproom. "I think our approach to the site is substantially similar to what it always has been," said Grant, who works in real estate in Cleveland and is shepherding planning aspects of the project. "But now, with the Great Lakes transfer, we're able to have a more dedicated focus. ... There's a significant portion of the site that's going to be taken up by their future operations. Our goal is to kind of work hand-in-hand, with that as the initial kickoff as the whole." Grant said the developers might be able to say more about their overall vision for the peninsula within a few months. They're expecting the development to incorporate a park or trails and to connect to the surrounding trail network and existing and planned green spaces. "We have aspirations to make this a modern, urban neighborhood that does the site justice," he said.

Man that is a pretty exterior. Coaster cities would kill to have an ornate building like that for $600K. I say brewery on first floor and apartments above :) I’ve been to two school house breweries before, one in Colorado Springs and one in Portland. What a destination it would be for CLE... I know, money... Buildings at Cleveland VA sell for $160M to $170M, cutting ties tainted by corruption scandal By Michelle Jarboe, The Plain Dealer Email the author | Follow on Twitter on February 22, 2018 at 1:30 PM, updated February 22, 2018 at 2:46 PM CLEVELAND, Ohio - An out-of-state investment firm has purchased three buildings and land at the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center, in a $160 million to $170 million deal that cuts lingering ties between the VA and the family of a contractor jailed as part of a major corruption scandal. Real estate records filed Wednesday show that affiliates of CGA Capital, based in Maryland, recently bought the VA's administration building, a 2,000-space parking garage and a 122-bed housing complex that serves homeless veterans. The purchase also included land along Wade Park Avenue, just north of the buildings, between East Boulevard and East 105th Street. The sellers were companies tied to Patricia Lawley, the ex-wife of former contractor and developer Michael Forlani, according to public records. Forlani is serving an eight-year sentence in federal prison in Pennsylvania for racketeering, bribery and other crimes that surfaced during a wide-ranging corruption investigation in Cuyahoga County. He's set for release in May 2019. http://realestate.cleveland.com/realestate-news/2018/02/buildings_at_cleveland_va_sell.html#incart_m-rpt-1

Cleveland: Stipe Miocic
Whoa. Stipe Miocic and Daniel Cormier set for champion vs. champion superfight at UFC 226; will also coach TUF 27 327 By Ariel Helwani@arielhelwani Jan 26, 2018, 6:06pm EST For the first time in the history of The Ultimate Fighter, two current champions, in two different weight classes, will serve as head coaches and also fight at season’s end. The UFC has tapped heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic and light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier as the next head coaches of the reality show, the UFC announced Friday. Filming is scheduled to commence next week. Following the conclusion of the show, the duo are scheduled to fight at UFC 226 on July 7 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas for Miocic’s heavyweight title. Should he win, Cormier would become just the second fighter in UFC history to be a champion in two different weight classes at the same time, and the fifth fighter in total to be a two-division UFC champion. https://www.mmafighting.com/2018/1/26/16938630/stipe-miocic-and-daniel-cormier-set-for-champion-vs-champion-superfight-at-ufc-226

Cleveland: Stipe Miocic
Interesting read. Stipe Miocic is the first person to successfully defend the world Heavyweight title three consecutive times, yet UFC hardly gives him any promotion. Other fighters continue to get way more hype and media attention on the national scene. How one of the best feuds in the UFC can make Stipe Miocic more marketable BOSTON - Stipe Miocic is known as "The Baddest Man on the Planet." He's certainly not the first heavyweight champion to lay claim to that nickname. If you type the phrase into Google, you'll get the Wikipedia bio of Mike Tyson as well as suggestions for Muhammad Ali, Floyd Mayweather and Evander Holyfield. Miocic is obviously not as well known as the other men who have held that nickname, but he certainly backed it up and cemented his place in UFC history when he dominated No. 1 contender Francis Ngannou, who was the favorite in Vegas, through five rounds at UFC 220. In the process, Miocic became the first heavyweight champion in UFC history to successfully defend the title three consecutive times. --- The problem for Miocic and the UFC is few outside the world of mixed martial arts know who Miocic is. That probably had a lot to do with the perception that the UFC and Dana White, in particular, wanted Ngannou to beat Miocic. This wasn't simply the perception from outsiders but from Miocic himself, as he heard White say that Ngannou "looks like the heavyweight champion of the world" and "a rock star globally" in the lead-up to the fight. http://www.espn.com/mma/story/_/id/22169321/mma-how-one-best-feuds-ufc-make-stipe-miocic-more-marketable

Cleveland: Stipe Miocic
#AndStill Stipe Miocic's win at UFC 220 cements him as the GOAT Updated 10:14 PM; Posted 10:15 PM By Troy L. Smith, Cleveland.com BOSTON, Mass. - There's no doubting it anymore. Stipe Miocic is the greatest heavyweight in UFC history. On Saturday night, the UFC Heavyweight Champ from Cleveland successfully defended his title for a record third consecutive time. Miocic defeated Francis Ngannou in the main event at UFC 220 in Boston. Heading into the fight, all the talk was about Ngannou's power, which had laid waste to the likes of Alistair Overeem and Andrei Arlovski in devastating fashion. Ngannou showed that power during the first round of Saturday's fight. But Miocic weathered the storm. http://www.cleveland.com/sports/index.ssf/2018/01/stipe_miocics_win_at_ufc_220_c.html#incart_river_mobile_home

CWRU startups glow at Consumer Electronics Show Henry Bendon, Staff Reporter • January 18, 2018 • Leave a Comment This year there were more startups from Case Western Reserve University students and alumni at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nevada than any other educational institution. CWRU sent a delegation of ten new companies in fields ranging from biomedical technology to STEM education for girls to showcase their work in Vegas last week. The team of organizations that helped the CWRU students and alumni make their way to CES includes the Larry Sears and Sally Zlotnick Sears think[box], which made some funding available to participating students and was itself on display at the show. The display for think[box] emphasized CWRU’s support for innovation by providing opportunities and facilities for students to design, test and fabricate products, described in a video taken of the booth’s representatives as “everything you could possibly need for your startup, under one roof.” The companies also received assistance from LaunchNet, a business incubator at CWRU that helps CWRU students and alumni to “analyze business ideas to help see if they should go to market.” If the companies are determined to have viable product ideas, LaunchNet and its director, Bob Sopko, will then help the companies learn how to find customers, distribution channels, and other business focused aspects of forming a company. https://observer.case.edu/cwru-startups-glow-at-consumer-electronics-show/

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
CWRU student newspaper perspective on the police shooting in University Circle: Fatal shooting of Thomas Yatsko at Corner Alley unnerves some Kevin Smith, Executive Editor • January 18, 2018 • Leave a Comment The Corner Alley Uptown is a popular spot for students, but the shooting on Jan. 13 of a 21-year old African-American man by Cleveland police has rattled feelings of safety on the area surrounding campus for some. --- Though not witnessing the incident themselves or hearing of any other violent altercations at the Corner Alley, both Duckett and Lockamy felt less safe going back there after the shooting. “Stray bullets kill innocent people all the time,” said Lockamy. Cleveland Institute of Art students live in apartments above Corner Alley. The building’s front entrance faces the corner of a busy intersection; across the street are restaurants and more apartments. On Saturday, off-duty Police Sergeant Dean Graziolli of the Cleveland Police Fifth District fatally shot Thomas Yatsko right outside the doors of University Circle’s popular bowling alley, arcade and bar. Despite efforts from medical teams and nurses, Yatsko died in University Hospitals later that night. http://observer.case.edu/fatal-shooting-of-thomas-yatsko-at-corner-alley-unnerves-some/
