  2. Currently sitting at a hotel bar in Eugene (OR) and business travelers were talking about their favorite cities to travel for work. The cities agreed upon were Portland, Denver, Cleveland, Chicago, Madison (WI), and Boise. Overhead was "Boise is surprising cool and Cleveland is solid." I know, not National Geographic, but it still made me smile.

Here's the website: http://www.tri-c.edu/hispanic-council/bienvenidos-a-cleveland/index.html Website aids Puerto Rican families relocating to Cleveland Updated 9:15 AM; Posted 9:14 AM By Karen Farkas, cleveland.com kfarkasCleveland[/member].com CLEVELAND, Ohio - Bienvenidos a Cleveland, a website to aid Puerto Rican families relocating to Cleveland following the devastation of Hurricane Maria, launched Monday. The site, a collaboration between Cuyahoga Community College, the Spanish American Committee, Esperanza Inc. and the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, provides a directory of agencies and organizations offering resources to arriving families. Since late September, hundreds of families have arrived in Cleveland -- many of them seeking support from community-based organizations such as the Spanish American Committee, Cleveland's oldest and largest Hispanic social service agency, Tri-C said. The biggest challenge has been housing, as many of the families have little or no income, officials said in a news release. Other needs include emergency funding, employment assistance, transportation, medical assistance, behavioral services, child care, senior care, food, clothing, diapers and household items. http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2017/11/website_aids_puerto_rican_fami.html#incart_river_home
  5. Not to be THAT GUY... but Puerto Ricans moving to Cleveland is not immigration. No, you need to be THAT GUY. Lo siento...! Mods, can you move my previous post to the "Cleveland: population trends" thread? https://www.urbanohio.com/forum/index.php/topic,5363.990.html Ironically, the most recent post in that thread was from me...which is why I am even more embarrassed. EDIT: cross posted
  6. Forest City Brewery grows steadily, bringing in array of events, groups (photos, video) Updated 7:54 AM; Posted 4:05 AM By Marc Bona, cleveland.com mbonaCleveland[/member].com CLEVELAND, Ohio - Like many Northeast Ohio breweries, Forest City Brewery has expanded, showing healthy growth. But it's not about adding fermenters or widening its distribution area. In addition to attracting regulars who belly up to the bar or head out on nice days to the historic beer garden, the brewery has evolved into a gathering place, a former dance studio turned into a meeting hall. The neighborhood - known as Duck Island - is growing, with 19th century homes surrounding the brewery's building, which also houses Western Reserve Meadery and Duck Rabbit Coffee. The area is a comforting fit for Demagall, who majored in history and is a pre-turn-of-the-century baseball buff. http://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2017/11/forest_city_brewery_grows_stea.html#incart_m-rpt-2

  8. Agreed, 9 is an embarrassing small number...especially for someone moving in from out-of-town looking for downtown urban ownership. Portland (where I currently live and where the gentlemen from the article above moved from) provides a better example of what Downtown Cleveland could/should look like from a "for sale" offerings metric. Portland OR has a similar 2.3 million metro population. For sale in Portland's city center: Downtown Portland -- 48 condos for sale: https://www.zillow.com/downtown-portland-or/condos/ Pearl District/Downtown Portland -- 52 condos for sale: https://www.zillow.com/homes/Pearl-District-Portland-OR_rb/ Thanks 100 "for sale" options for someone looking to own downtown. Heck, before I bought my own house out here, I personally looked at 30+ houses before deciding. Downtown Cleveland drastically needs a tremendous increase of "for sale" downtown living options. Downtown Toledo lists 3-4 condos for sale :)

  16. Terry Pluto needed a break from the Browns: Case Western Reserve football: Winning big where it counts -- Terry Pluto (photos) Updated Nov 9, 11:50 AM; Posted Nov 9, 10:25 AM By Terry Pluto, The Plain Dealer, [email protected] CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Here's what it's like to play football at Case Western Reserve University. It's players pulling all-nighters ... because they have to study for tests. These guys are after the big time: Admission to medical schools, engineering schools and schools that offer MBA programs. It's the team facing the biggest game of the season Saturday, but 15 players were excused from Tuesday's practice. They were attending a session called "Special Instruction" to prepare them for exams in Chemistry and Physics. It's where the guys majoring in corporate and international finance are viewed as taking the "easy courses" by the future engineers and doctors. http://www.cleveland.com/pluto/index.ssf/2017/11/case_western_reserve_football.html
  17. Congrats to Case Western Reserve's football team on a statement win, moving to an undefeated 9-0. Next stop, Pittsburgh, against their arch nemesis rival Carnegie Mellon, who is 7-2. Game is known as the Academic Bowl. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academic_Bowl_(college_football). And congrats to Coach Greg Debeljak on his 100th win of his head coaching career. BTW...finally, some fantastic media coverage on the only NCAA team in Cleveland city limits: Case Western Reserve in title chase with 41-10 win over Westminster (photos) Updated Nov 4, 3:02 PM; Posted Nov 4, 3:02 PM By Mike Peticca, [email protected] CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Case Western Reserve University won, in dominating fashion, the football game it had to win to make its next game crucial. The Spartans, keyed by Jacob Burke's 160 rushing yards and three touchdowns, routed a strong Westminster team, 41-10, in a Presidents Athletic Conference game at DiSanto Field on Saturday. Case Western (9-0, 7-0), the nation's 16th-ranked Division III team, closes its regular season with a visit to Carnegie Mellon (7-2, 5-2) next Saturday. A win would likely earn a national playoffs berth for the Spartans, while a loss would probably keep them out of the postseason. http://s.cleveland.com/sWOoo9C Case Western football team routs Westminster, eyes 10-0 season next week at Carnegie Mellon By Mark Podolski, The News-Herald POSTED: 11/04/17, 8:37 PM EDT | UPDATED: 3 HRS AGO 0 It’s taken a while for the Case Western Reserve football team to come full circle, but here it is. With one game to play this season, the Spartans are on the cusp of a 10-0 regular season, and a likely spot in the NCAA Division III playoffs. The victory was Debeljak’s 100th of coaching career, and his players delivered the milestone win in impressive fashion. Westminster entered the game 6-2 and this week was regional ranked by NCAA.com. http://www.news-herald.com/article/HR/20171104/SPORTS/171109671
  18. BUMP. . One more reminder for 1 PM tomorrow, Saturday, in University Circle.
  19. I’m unsure why you say this... this is actually the most impressed I’ve been with him in a national interview, and in the face of constant “you really think you have a chance” and “we graded you an F in two categories.” He represented Cleveland with a “well **** you sir, we’re going to succeed” attitude to somewhat loaded, negativity implied questions.
  20. This Saturday at 1 PM is #16 Case Western Reserve’s final home game of the season. They sit 8-0 , but have a tough opponent in 6-2 Westminster (PA) . I’m sure they they could use any crowd support they can get. Home games are played at DiSanto Field in University Circle. I encourage you to check ou Cleveland’s only college football team (to counter the 0-8 Browns). http://athletics.case.edu/sports/fball/2017-18/releases/20171101esm175
  21. Nice! Keeping holding that #1 ranking. I am a CWRU alum...undergrad. ------- In other rankings news: CWRU among the best in the country for commercialization of research Oct 31, 2017 Case Western Reserve ranked 13th in the country—ahead of Harvard, Georgia Tech, and the University of Chicago—in a new study of research universities’ effectiveness in translating research breakthroughs into commercial success. “This result is a testament to the dedication and creativity of our faculty, as well as the efforts of our Technology Transfer Office and leadership of Vice President for Research Suzanne Rivera,” President Barbara R. Snyder said. “I congratulate them all, and look forward to still more innovation that benefits our world.” The Brookings Institution’s “Hidden in plain sight: The oversized impact of downtown universities” finds that leading higher education institutions located within major metropolitan areas dramatically outpace suburban and rural peers in research-related economic activity. On average, these research universities create 71 percent more start-ups and complete 80 percent more licensing agreements, among other metrics. Rockefeller University, a New York City-based institution focused on biomedical research, ranked first overall and in every category, with MIT and Columbia respectively second and third overall. Meanwhile, Case Western Reserve ranked 13th overall, but stood at sixth for its number of patents per 1,000 students, at 4.1. Its licensing deals (2.7) and new businesses per 1,000 students (0.4) each ranked 13th, while it fell to 26th for licensing income per student, at $155. Overall, Harvard was 15th, Georgia Tech 14th and the University of Chicago 22nd. http://thedaily.case.edu/cwru-among-best-country-commercialization-research/ FULL REPORT https://www.brookings.edu/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/2017-10-10_ocs_bass_downtown_universities_scott_andes_full.pdf
  22. Bad Tom Smith Brewing nears opening after break-ins Posted on October 31, 2017 at 7:09 AM Marc Bona, cleveland.com CLEVELAND, Ohio - A pair of break-ins have delayed the launch of Bad Tom Smith Brewing in Cleveland's Ohio City neighborhood, but the owners are optimistic they can open in November. This has been a challenging year for Vojtush and Gittins. They had planned to open around Memorial Day, but red tape between city inspectors and ownersdelayed that until September. Now, two break-ins have pushed back the opening yet again. Thieves pilfered about $30,000 worth of equipment on Oct. 2 and Oct. 25, Vojtush said. Electronics, a commercial air-conditioning condenser, bar equipment, uninstalled security system and "a significant amount" of construction tools were stolen, he said. The air-conditioning unit alone cost $5,500 and weighted about 300 pounds, he said. http://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2017/10/bad_tom_smith_brewing_nears_op.html
