  2. CWRU remains financially sound -- continuing to be a solid anchor for the east side and University Circle. Case Western Reserve fundraising tops $1.5 billion goal Posted on October 6, 2017 at 11:07 AM By Rich Exner, cleveland.com, rexnerCleveland[/member].com CLEVELAND, Ohio - Case Western Reserve University has reached a $1.5 billion fundraising goal a year ahead of schedule thanks to donations and pledges over six years from nearly 55,000 individuals and organizations. "Remember, we are not finished yet," CWRU President Barbara R. Snyder said during a homecoming event Thursday night, according to a news release from the school. "The generosity of Case Western Reserve's alumni and friends is absolutely astounding -- and deeply humbling," Snyder said. "It is also a testament to the inspiring teaching and research of our faculty, and immense talent and promise of our students." The initial goal for CWRU's "Forward Thinking" campaign was $1 billion. That goal was reached in 2014 after 30 months. The university then raised the goal to $1.5 billion with a target date of 2018. Though the campaign will continue, a new goal has not been set. http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2017/10/case_western_reserve_fund-rais.html
  3. Case Western Reserve moves to 5-0 in Cleveland today. From the Plain Dealer: Case Western Reserve dominates on both sides in 33-3 rout of Bethany (photos) Posted on October 7, 2017 at 4:51 PM By Mike Peticca, Special to the Plain Dealer, [email protected] CLEVELAND, Ohio -- It's easy to notice the weekly offensive highlights of the undefeated Case Western Reserve University football team. Don't overlook the Spartans' defense, though, which was again dominant in CWRU's 33-3 rout of Bethany in a Presidents Athletic Conference football game at DiSanto Field on Saturday. Meanwhile, senior quarterback Rob Cuda led a Case Western offense that totaled 463 yards as he completed 19 of 33 passes for 299 yards and three touchdowns. CWRU (5-0, 4-0), 17th in the Division III national rankings, has now outscored its three opponents by a combined 200-62. The Spartans finished last season 9-1, with a season finale loss to Carnegie-Mellon that cost them a national playoff berth. http://www.cleveland.com/sports/college/index.ssf/2017/10/case_western_reserve_dominates_2.html

  7. Keep an eye on this team this year Cleveland, Case Western Reserve football rolls to 3-0. From the PD: Case Western Reserve keeps rolling, routs Waynesburg, 56-21 Posted on September 23, 2017 at 10:23 PM By Mike Peticca, Special to the Plain Dealer [email protected] CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Senior Rob Cuda passed for 314 yards and three touchdowns and senior Jacob Burke rushed for 137 yards and three touchdowns as Case Western Reserve University routed Waynesburg, 56-21, in a Presidents Athletic Conference game on Saturday night at DiSanto Field. CWRU (3-0, 2-0), 18th in the Division III national rankings, has now outscored its three opponents by a combined 132-45. The Spartans, coached by Greg Debeljak, finished last season 9-1, with a season finale loss to Carnegie-Mellon that cost them a national playoff berth. http://s.cleveland.com/oK7krFh
  8. Here's an idea Cleveland (and GCSC) could mimic: As a shout out to Cleveland, who only has college football at the NCAA D3 level...and doesn't attempt to regain/engage civic interest. As I type this right now, Minneapolis is hosting 35K+ local fans watching their local NCAA football teams at Target Field...featuring two D3 schools of St. Thomas vs St. Johns. http://m.mlb.com/twins/tickets/info/tommie-johnnie-football http://www.startribune.com/34-000-tickets-already-sold-for-st-thomas-st-john-s-football-game-at-target-field/446623873/ This is reminiscent of Cleveland's "Big Four" football days when they would use the Cleveland Indians' League Park to host college football games. For example, here is a photo of (Case) Western Reserve vs Baldwin Wallace (where Lee Tressel coached) in 1935: https://books.google.com/books?id=RFvzem5opK0C&pg=PT129&lpg=PT129&dq=john+carroll+%22western+reserve%22+1935+football+league+park&source=bl&ots=gXwurarrWC&sig=yJq7U2NEwWIMF9_rtJL-nP0JKyg&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwi87NvfkrzWAhVEMGMKHdDmCvYQ6AEIQTAF#v=onepage&q=john%20carroll%20%22western%20reserve%22%201935%20football%20league%20park&f=false NEO has three teams ranked in the Top 25 at NCAA D3 (out of 249 teams), and there is never any local promotion or pride. # 2 Mount Union # 9 John Carroll #18 Case Western Reserve Or at the very least, Cleveland could host local MAC schools, such as Akron or Kent State, who only average 10K fans a game at home.
  9. Incredible photos. Thank you KJP.

  11. Midtown's makeover will get lift from townhomes September 17, 2017 4:00 am UPDATED 11 HOURS AGO By JAY MILLER The sprucing up of Cleveland's Midtown neighborhood, once a ragged industrial district, is continuing. Soon, residents will be occupying $400,000 homes, and office workers will be toiling in the home of a former restaurant supply business. Ground recently was broken by Boston's Vazza Real Estate Group for One Midtown, a complex of 23 townhomes at East 71st Street and Euclid Avenue, replacing a two-story brick building that last held a long-closed furniture liquidator. Vazza is building three-story, three-bedroom units with rooftop decks of between 1,800 and 2,200 square feet. One Midtown is Vazza's first venture into Cleveland. Derek Holt, managing director of Vazza, said he has relatives and friends here and his firm has, for some time, been watching Cleveland "out of the corner of our eye." http://www.crainscleveland.com/article/20170917/news/135741/midtowns-makeover-will-get-lift-townhomes
  12. Cleveland is going after the Amazon headquarters bid Updated on September 15, 2017 at 4:42 PM, Posted on September 15, 2017 at 2:59 PM By Emily Bamforth, cleveland.com, ebamforthCleveland[/member].com CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cleveland wants to compete for the Amazon headquarters, according to a joint statement by Mayor Frank G. Jackson and County Executive Armond Budish. The company announced last week they were building a second headquarters, which could bring 50,000 jobs to the city they choose. Northeast Ohio will launch a community effort similar to the one that won Republican National Convention last year, the statement said. This means working on the bid with partners including the Greater Cleveland Partnership, Northeast Ohio Area-wide Coordinating Agency (NOACA) and Cleveland State University. http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2017/09/cleveland_is_going_after_the_a.html#incart_m-rpt-1
  13. Well as crazy as the stipulations sound, this should still allow 98% of Case Western Reserve students to be eligible for tomorrow night's football home opener :) CWRU Students Have a Chance to Kick for $25,000 at Halftime on Saturday The Case Western Reserve University Department of Physical Education and Athletics and the Department of Student Affairs will be sponsoring an opportunity for one Case Western Reserve student to win $25,000 at halftime of the football team's home opening game against Grove City College on Saturday, September 16th at 7:00 p.m. at DiSanto Field. A CWRU student drawn at random will have a chance to kick a 45-yard field goal on Saturday. Should the student make the kick, they will win the $25,000 prize. http://athletics.case.edu/sports/fball/2017-18/releases/20170914nl9f6z

  15. Hey Amazon! In other news... Cleveland ranks No. 2 in safety from natural disasters Posted on September 8, 2017 at 1:49 PM By Emily Bamforth, cleveland.com, ebamforthCleveland[/member].com CLEVELAND, Ohio -- CBS News is touting Cleveland as the second-safest city in the country when it comes to natural disasters, according to 2013 data. So move to Cleveland, where we rank only behind Syracuse, New York, where we have few wildfires, tornadoes, earthquakes, floods and hurricanes! CBS News published the data this week, in the midst of news about hurricanes in the southeast United States and wildfires in the northwest. The data was compiled by real-estate company Trulia, based on information from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, U.S. Forest Service and FEMA's National Flood Insurance Program. http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2017/09/cleveland_ranks_2nd_in_list_of.html
  16. Ouch...from a Wooster Ohio guy: Six cities Amazon should consider for its second headquarters by John Cook on September 7, 2017 at 7:14 am Cities you won’t find on our list: New York (too expensive, too big); San Francisco (too expensive, too close to Seattle); and Cleveland (Sorry to my Buckeye comrades, it’s still Cleveland!). https://www.geekwire.com/2017/six-cities-amazon-consider-second-headquarters/
  17. Thanks KJP. 1) The info in the link is incorrect (c'mon Clevelandhistorical.org!). Case School of Applied Science was operating out of the Case homestead from 1881 - 1885 on Rockwell Ave: https://books.google.com/books?id=uxy_zxXFVGkC&pg=PT18&lpg=PT18&dq=leonard+case+house+rockwell&source=bl&ots=valv6jhb54&sig=wKxybJJBKzz5CsafEiYfLdFnCqQ&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjL7rys7ZXWAhVL94MKHX_5Do8Q6AEIPDAG#v=onepage&q=leonard%20case%20house%20rockwell&f=false Case school moved to University Circle upon the completion of Case Main building. 2) These are in fact two different buildings (see attached for their respective locations). - The first image, labeled "Adelbert Collage" in my attachment, is still standing (which is CWRU's present day administration building). - The second image, Case Main building, was demolished in 1972. (architect John Eisenmann)
  18. Amazon campus in Seattle is massive...basically half of the South Lake Union neighborhood of Downtown. Cleveland would need to think big here. Either all the remaining surface lot space in the Warehouse District + Justice Center or multiple blocks east of Erieview Tower/north of CSU. Ironically, the latter is kind of what South Lake Union used to look like before Amazon built there (scattered sketchy/low density warehouse buildings)
  19. Thanks again. I keep finding myself getting pulled into older Cleveland history as well. In this case, I was reading up on some CWRU history this part week, focusing up on some under represented, interesting people (which eventually lead me to my question here). A couple interesting facts I came across was Leonard Case, Jr was also founder of the Scroll and Key secret society https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leonard_Case,_Jr. And university President Carroll Cutler was a member of the infamous Skull and Bones secret society https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carroll_Cutler Of course I added it to both their Wikipedia pages. ------ Actually one more question for you all: First Mayor John. W. Willey was buried at Erie Street Cemetery, but multiple references say his remains were moved to Lake View Cemetery. But when you go to the Lake View Cemetery directory, there is no reference of him being there. Is there a grave or marker for John W. Willey in Lake View Cemetery ?
  20. Man, you are quick to the trigger. Thanks again. Even through Case first started on Rockwell Street Downtown, it makes sense the first chapter house could be across the river, predating the building shown in your link. EDIT: Thanks KJP! That was exactly what I was reading. I do love having a team of expert researchers at my finger tips with response times of under 5 min ... :-D
  21. Perfect. Thanks! Link is now bookmarked.
  22. Historical location question - I'm was reading up on some old Cleveland history and came across my own Case fraternity's original history. I'm trying to pinpoint where the first two chapter houses were. The book I found written in 1903 shows the first two locations as: 1) Apartments at "Heyse Block" from 1884 - 1886 (Note: Case was located Downtown Cleveland at the time until 1885) 2) Apartments at "Fairmount Court" Intersection of Euclid Ave and Fairmount STREET from 1886 - 1891 Anyone able to help?
  23. #cmworld (for example, on the free content publicity: ) Content Marketing World kicks off at Huntington Convention Center Updated on September 5, 2017 at 4:14 PM Posted on September 5, 2017 at 4:08 PM By Julie Washington, The Plain Dealer [email protected] CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Orange was the color of the day as Content Marketing World brought brightly clad attendees to downtown Cleveland to learn how to package their messages so consumers will hear them. Orange is the unofficial color of the event, which bills itself as the the largest content marketing gathering in the world, said organizer Joe Pulizzi, founder of the Content Marketing Institute. About 3,500 participants from 50 countries are expected at the event, which runs today through Friday at the Huntington Convention Center of Cleveland. Content Marketing World's 120 sessions and workshops offer lessons on how to create content, focus on audience needs, measure engagement and plan marketing strategies. http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2017/09/content_marketing_world_kicks_1.html
  24. On Hamilton between E.53rd - E.55th: Cleveland's Rebuilders Xchange is a 70,000-square-foot treasure trove of salvaged goods (photos) Updated on September 5, 2017 at 10:11 AM, Posted on September 5, 2017 at 10:10 AM By Nikki Delamotte, cleveland.com, NDelamotteUllmanCleveland[/member].com CLEVELAND, Ohio - Jessica Davis and Brooklyn DiFranco can tell you the story behind nearly every dresser, table, chair and slab of wood in the 70,000-square-foot warehouse space that makes up Rebuilders Xchange (RBX). Sometimes those stories evolve as each piece finds a new home. Sometimes a name etched into a desk leads Davis and DiFranco on a chase to reunite a Holocaust survivor's family with long-lost documents. (More on that later.) Nestled in the St. Clair-Superior neighborhood, the retail hub of salvaged building goods opened to the public this June. It's one of a handful of businesses in Cleveland's new Hamilton Collaborative space at the former Osborn Industrial Complex, at 5401 Hamilton Ave. An architecture firm, Ingenuity, a community woodshop and a community motorcycle garage are just a few of the other businesses at the site. http://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2017/09/clevelands_rebuilders_xchange.html
  25. Case Western Reserve defeated University of Chicago 34-14 at Chicago on Saturday. They are currently ranked #19 in the nation (note: there are 249 teams in DIII NCAA) http://www.d3football.com/top25/2017/week1 (And also in NEO -- Mount Union #2 and John Carroll #9).
