  1. Ohio & Erie Canalway fears federal budget could jeopardize Towpath Trail completion Updated on July 14, 2017 at 1:49 PM, Posted on July 14, 2017 at 1:48 PM AKRON, Ohio - The Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition has issued an urgent request for supporters' help in appealing to U.S. Congress members, to keep its federal funding. The canalway fears the National Heritage Area, which includes the Ohio & Erie Canal, the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad and parts of Cuyahoga Valley National Park, will suffer major budget cuts under President Trump. Losing funding, the canalway says, could jeopardize the goal of completing the Towpath Trail by 2020. http://www.cleveland.com/akron/index.ssf/2017/07/ohio_erie_canalway_coaliton_is.html

Vacated St. Rocco Church-owned homes force Roehl Avenue blight, residents say (photos, video) Updated on July 2, 2017 at 4:37 PM Posted on July 2, 2017 at 6:15 AM BY RACHEL DISSELL, THE PLAIN DEALER [email protected] Those neighbors also left the street last year, after their landlord, St. Rocco Church, decided the residents of the 10 single and multi-family homes it owned on Roehl Avenue and one on W. 33rd Street must vacate. The church, which owns the homes in trust with the Cleveland Catholic Diocese, first gave tenants notice of considerable rent hikes -- as much as 80 to 100 percent -- over two months. Some of the tenants moved knowing they could not afford the rent hike. But others rallied against the decision, and how it was handled. Though they had been paying lower than market rate rents, many said they had personally invested in the properties and maintained them, while others accused the church of failing to keep the units up to code. http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2017/07/vacated_st_rocco_church_homes_f.html#incart_river_home_pop

  5. The slow train of development: Bad Tom Smith Brewing's Ohio City plans delayed Updated on June 29, 2017 at 9:10 AM, Posted on June 29, 2017 at 9:07 AM By Marc Bona, cleveland.com , mbonaCleveland[/member].com CLEVELAND, Ohio - Delays have pushed back the opening date for Bad Tom Smith Brewing's Ohio City location, said managing partner John Vojtush, who owns the company with his fiancée Sheryl Gittins. The delays are coming in the back-and-forth editing-like process between the brewery and the city's building department, Vojtush said. The process started in early March, when Bad Tom submitted plans to the building department. An inspector took two days to examine the prints, then returned them. The brewery then took a week and a half to amend the prints, and it's been back and forth or in delay mode ever since. All the while, Vojtush and Gittins still have to pay rent. They also have spent $20,000 for work from engineers. "We lost the summer," he said. "I would have loved to have taken advantage of the summer months, but it is what it is." http://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2017/06/bad_tom_smith_brewings_ohio_ci.html

  19. A document posted on the city's website also mentions a 110-room Element hotel, a Westin-affiliated, extended-stay brand that's billed as eco-friendly. The extended-stay hotel inclusion is spot on for what needed in the area. I can't tell you how many times I've run into people looking for short term housing for a couple weeks or couple months tied to Case Western Reserve, Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals, etc. Fantastic proposal. It perfectly addresses the pent up demand for more housing and desire for walkability.
  20. mmm ... beer ... 19 new breweries worth checking out in Greater Cleveland (photos) Guide to 19 breweries that opened in Northeast Ohio in last 500 days Posted May 30, 2017 CLEVELAND, Ohio – Breweries have been popping up like ping pong balls bouncing around and shooting out of lottery machines, one after another after another .... They dot the landscape like corner bars did in cities and towns for years. So we offer a guide to recent ones that have opened in Northeast Ohio. We looked at the last 500 days, putting us back to early 2016. We are including only ones currently open for business with public tap rooms. Those that are close to opening within months (Bascule Brewery and Public House in Lorain, for example) are not on the list. Brewing is an industry embraced by Northeast Ohioans. Cheers! http://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2017/05/19_new_breweries_in_northeast.html#incart_m-rpt-2
