  1. A few nice shoutouts: A Classy Lady's Guide To Cleveland Amber Gibson , CONTRIBUTOR Opinions expressed by Forbes Contributors are their own. In the past year, Cleveland's sports teams have given the city a new mentality too – that of winners. LeBron James led the Cleveland Cavaliers to their first NBA Championship last year and are steamrolling through the Eastern Conference again this year. Plus, the Cleveland Indians put on a valiant showing in the seven game World Series against my Chicago Cubs. Forbes even called Cleveland America's hottest city. On my first trip, to visit an old friend who had moved home from Chicago, I was surprised by the city's sophisticated side. https://www.forbes.com/sites/ambergibson/2017/05/08/a-classy-ladys-guide-to-cleveland/#2b2ea95a208f

  3. Times they are achangin Cleveland Clinic CEO Toby Cosgrove announces plans to step down By Kris Wernowsky, cleveland.com May 01, 2017 at 8:32 AM, updated May 01, 2017 at 10:15 AM CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cleveland Clinic's Toby Cosgrove announced that he would step down as president and CEO later this year, but he will remain with the Clinic in an advisory role. The announcement was made at a meeting Monday morning, according to a press released issued shortly after by the Cleveland Clinic. Here is the full statement: After nearly 13 years as president and CEO of Cleveland Clinic - which has grown into an $8 billion health system with multiple locations in Ohio, Florida, Nevada, Canada, Abu Dhabi, and, in 2020, London - Toby Cosgrove, M.D., announced at a staff meeting today that he has decided to begin a succession process to transition out of the top executive role later this year. The Governance Committee has asked Dr. Cosgrove to continue on in an advisory role. Over Dr. Cosgrove's tenure, Cleveland Clinic's expansion locally, nationally, and internationally has positioned the institution for a strong future as its revenues have grown from $3.7 billion in 2004 to $8.5 billion in 2016. It has become Ohio's largest employer with over 50,000 caregivers and a global leader in clinical outcomes, patient experience, innovation and wellness, ranking No. 2 in the nation last year by U.S. News & World Report. http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2017/05/cleveland_clinic_ceo_toby_cosg_1.html
  4. See what's popping up on Cleveland's waterfront Updated May 01, 2017 Posted May 01, 2017 Peter Krouse, cleveland.com and Marvin Fong, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio - Northeast Ohio has something any city would love to have, a vast expanse of freshwater at its doorstep. People and buildings come and go, but Lake Erie is here forever. After decades of turning its back on the lake, Ohioans are now embracing it as a place to live, work and play. They are learning how to protect it and how to use it to boost the economy without filling it up with garbage and debris. The importance of the lakefront has not been lost on public officials who have undertaken numerous projects to improve its economic and recreational viability, whether developing the North Coast Harbor area around the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to improving access to the lakefront at the Cuyahoga River. http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2017/05/see_whats_popping_up_on_clevel.html
  5. Yesterday in the mail, I received a donation request for upcoming Case Western Reserve athletics infrastructure projects. In order of priority: 1) Wyant Phase II Field House (Wellness and Athletic Center) -- Indoor multipurpose building connected to DiSanto Field. Here's what I think is an older rendering: http://athletics.case.edu/information/athletic_giving 2) Adelbert Gymnasium (Armory)-- Renovating the soon-to-be 100 year old (2018) gym. Seating, locker rooms, coaching offices, and new entrance. Originally part of the building was built in 1888. https://case.edu/its/archives/Buildings/adlgym1919.htm 3) Racket Center -- indoor courts, restrooms, locker rooms, and meeting rooms.
  6. So we're all in agreement "Greater Cleveland" does not equal MSA?
  7. What would you consider "Greater Cleveland?" The wiki page defines it as only the MSA. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greater_Cleveland Lazy reporters/people use wiki more than we'd like to know (which to me makes the entire region look much smaller). EDIT: Even Google search engines often use wiki for definitions. For example, Google "greater cleveland population." It gives the MSA population but a map of the CSA. Do you think it should be changed?

League Park sparks plans for soda fountain and broadcast museum - and pushback from Councilman TJ Dow: Mark Naymik By Mark Naymik, cleveland.com April 04, 2017 at 9:59 AM, updated April 04, 2017 at 12:15 PM CLEVELAND, Ohio - Cleveland Councilman TJ Dow may be the only elected official in America to be against baseball and ice cream. For months, he has opposed a proposal to build an ice cream parlor featuring a vintage soda fountain, small retail shop and museum in a decaying two-story building directly across from League Park, the historic baseball field at East 66th Street and Lexington Avenue in Hough. The city has invested $6.3 million to renovate the field as a catalyst for neighborhood development. http://www.cleveland.com/naymik/index.ssf/2017/04/league_park_sparks_plans_for_s.html

'Torso' comics series to become movie called 'Ness' by Jason Bourne director By Michael Sangiacomo, The Plain Dealer Email the author | Follow on Twitter on March 28, 2017 at 7:55 AM, updated March 28, 2017 at 11:28 AM CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Paul Greengrass has agreed to direct the movie "Ness," based on the comic series "Torso" by former Clevelander Brian Bendis and Mentor native Marc Andreyko. And if Bendis and Andreyko have their way, a large part of it will be filmed in Cleveland. "The great thing is that I did not even have to pitch filming in Cleveland," said Bendis from his home in Portland. "The line producers have already been to the city scouting out locations. The plan is to shoot exteriors in Cleveland and interiors in the United Kingdom." http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2017/03/torso_comics_series_to_become.html
  10. Cleveland chef Zack Bruell to close Dynomite Uptown location By John Petkovic, The Plain Dealer Email the author | Follow on Twitter on March 27, 2017 at 6:10 PM, updated March 27, 2017 at 6:33 PM CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Dynomite Burgers and Sushi Uptown is done. Cleveland chef Zack Bruell's fast-casual eatery will serve its last burger on Friday. "I believe in the concept and the neighborhood, but we just couldn't make it work down there," says Bruell, referring to the Uptown development in University Circle. "There are just so many fast-casual restaurants." Dynomite opened two years ago to much fanfare. It expanded on the offerings of Bruell's Playhouse Square takeout restaurant of the same name by adding seating and a menu that included sushi and spirits to go with burgers inspired by Bruell spots such as Parallax, L'Albatros and Chinato. http://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2017/03/cleveland_chef_zack_bruell_to.html

  16. Two refugee families arrive in Cleveland, ready to start new lives in America Mike Brookbank 5:38 PM, Feb 10, 2017 CLEVELAND - The first refugees to make it to Cleveland since President Trump's travel ban was blocked by federal judges are getting settled in their new homes. News 5 was there when two families arrived at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, ready to start their new lives in America. The families were originally supposed to arrive at the end of January. Donations from the community are giving refugees a strong start. Us Together says they are still in need of toiletries and non-perishable food. http://www.newsnet5.com/news/local-news/two-refugee-families-arrive-in-cleveland-ready-to-start-new-lives-in-america Two refugee families arrive in Cleveland after ruling on Trump's immigration ban (photos, video) By Brian Albrecht, The Plain Dealer Email the author | Follow on Twitter on February 10, 2017 at 11:53 AM, updated February 10, 2017 at 4:43 PM CLEVELAND, Ohio - There were smiles, nervousness and a palpable sense of relief among both the 10 members of two refugee families who arrived at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport Friday morning, and the people who welcomed them with flowers and signs. The families, one Syrian (from Aleppo) and one Iraqi, were en route to the United States Thursday when a federal appeals court panel maintained the freeze on President Donald Trump's immigration ban of refugees and citizens from seven Muslim-majority countries. http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2017/02/refugee_families_arrive_in_cle.html
  17. Cleveland Should Embrace Civic Tech But without City Hall support, it could fizzle just as the movement is taking off. Sheehan Hannan January 30, 2017 These days, Brian Cummins is riding high. The jittery, paragraph-long-sentence-slinging wonk of a Cleveland City councilman shows up to interviews on a red BMW motorcycle. He finally got his first committee chairmanship last year. He even has a pet project: getting government to solve problems with technology. That’s a tall order in a city with a website that’s as mid-’90s as a pair of wide-leg JNCO Jeans. But Cummins has seen the shining light of modernity. http://clevelandmagazine.com/in-the-cle/commentary/articles/cleveland-should-embrace-civic-tech
  18. Cleveland Clinic resident from Sudan says she was denied entry back into U.S. after Middle East trip CLEVELAND, Ohio -- An internal medicine resident at the Cleveland Clinic who is a citizen of Sudan said Saturday that she was detained in New York when she was trying to return to Ohio after a trip to Saudi Arabia and was put on a plane back to the Middle East. Dr. Suha Abushamma, who has worked at the Clinic since July on a work visa, left the U.S. one day after an executive order issued by President Donald Trump. The executive order included a crackdown on immigration from refugees and citizens of seven majority-Muslim countries. Abushamma, 26, of Cleveland Heights, lived in Saudi Arabia before being hired at the Clinic. She is a Muslim woman and a citizen of Sudan. "I had a good long cry when I went on the plane," Abushamma said. "It's the first time I cried all day." http://www.cleveland.com/court-justice/index.ssf/2017/01/cleveland_clinic_resident_from_1.html#incart_2box
  19. :( President Donald Trump acts to restrict immigration, blocking a Syrian family due in Cleveland Tuesday By Brian Albrecht, The Plain Dealer on January 27, 2017 at 6:24 PM CLEVELAND, Ohio - The fate of a Syrian refugee family bound for resettlement here hung on the stroke of a pen by President Donald Trump on Friday. The family -- two parents and four children ages 6 through 15 -- were scheduled to fly from a refugee camp in Turkey on Monday and arrive in Cleveland Tuesday afternoon, according to Danielle Drake, community relations manager for the local branch of the US Together refugee resettlement agency. The new restrictions will cancel resettlement of another family from Syria, due here on Feb. 13, and two groups of refugees from the Democratic Republic of the Congo on Feb. 6. Drake said the Congolese refugees include a 14-year-old boy whose father, now living in Cleveland, has been waiting four years to reunite with his son. http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2017/01/president_donal_trump_acts_to.html#incart_river_home
