  5. Cleveland native Monica Potter's HGTV show "Welcome Back Potter" sets Oct. 11 premiere By Julie Washington, The Plain Dealer Email the author | Follow on Twitter on October 10, 2016 at 10:00 AM, updated October 10, 2016 at 10:24 AM CLEVELAND, Ohio -- When four feisty sisters – led by Cleveland native and "Parenthood" star Monica Potter – take on a complete renovation of their neglected family home, expect laughter and hugs along with hammering and painting. "It was so cathartic, it was so much fun," Potter said about the five-week redo that's the basis of "Welcome Back Potter," a new HGTV show premiering at 11 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11, with a second 30-minute episode airing at 11:30 p.m. The series will run for six episodes. "It was great, it was hell, it was non-stop laughter," she said. "When the four of us get together, it's spontaneous combustion." The family sold the 1,800-square-foot Collinwood home in 1987, but it sat abandoned and in disrepair after the last owner died. Potter, 45, bought it in 2012 so that she could update the 1924 residence into a comfortable place for holiday gatherings. http://www.cleveland.com/insideout/index.ssf/2016/10/cleveland_native_monica_potter.html

  10. More coverage from the PD. Loving it! Case Western Reserve improves to 4-0: CWRU rallies to rout Saint Vincent, 53-28 CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Quarterback Rob Cuda keyed a dynamic offense and Case Western Reserve University's defense contributed several big plays as the Spartans rallied for a 53-28 rout of Saint Vincent in a Presidents Athletic Conference game at DiSanto Field on Saturday night. Cuda completed 19 of 37 passes for 291 yards and three touchdowns, and ran for 99 yards and two scores on 20 carries. The junior quarterback had plenty of help as the Spartans — now averaging 47 points a game - totaled 640 yards of offense to 348 for Saint Vincent. http://www.cleveland.com/sports/college/index.ssf/2016/10/cwru_rallies_to_rout_saint_vin.html
  11. I agree with 327 on the portion facing Superior. Let's not the mortgage the future with bad urban planning, unless Cleveland wants to remain a city with pockets of walkability. Not to mention, we have Masthead Brewing going in one block up (https://www.facebook.com/MastheadBrewingCo/) and there is a commercial building immediately next door. This is the definition of infill. This just may be bad public policy allowing for this to be built. As one of the guys who moved to Portland OR, I can attest to how the majority of new structures on major roads include some form of retail/commercial facing the road or blvd. Walkability remains the focus of city codes and urban planning. Many neighborhoods are even knocking down residential to put in such structures/mixed-use buildings. Here's a cool interactive map showing the development/infill in the city http://www.nextportland.com

  13. Yoga at the Steve Belichick Weight Room: College football: Yoga is in for Case Western Reserve team By Mark Podolski, The News-Herald Debeljak came up with the idea for a football players yoga class after reading a story about Seahawks coach Pete Carroll doing the same with his players. The class has had a positive effect on the Case team, said Debeljak, especially his larger players such as offense and defensive linemen. “The best lineman we’ve had here are the ones who could bend,” said Debeljak, who was introduced to yoga by his daughter Allison about 10 years ago. “I think (yoga) really helps our lineman with flexibility and getting into position. As for the rest of our guys, this helps with their state of mind and just being able to relax and relieve a little bit of stress.” http://www.news-herald.com/sports/20160929/college-football-yoga-is-in-for-case-western-reserve-team

After defending his home turf... Stipe Miocic to bank more than $700,000 for UFC 203 performance By Troy L. Smith, cleveland.com Follow on Twitter on September 13, 2016 at 7:30 AM CLEVELAND, Ohio – According to figures released by the Ohio Athletic Commission, Stipe Miocic could pocket over a million dollars when it's all said and done for his victory at UFC 203. The Ohio native and UFC Heavyweight Champion knocked out Alistair Overeem during their main event fight at The Q on Saturday. The Commission says Miocic was paid $600,000 for the fight from the UFC. That gets added to $90,000 in bonuses Miocic has already earned for his performance. He should get a couple more bonuses, including knockout of the night, when UFC reveals its full numbers soon. http://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2016/09/stipe_miocic_to_bank_more_than.html
  17. Restoration begins at Cleveland's historic Variety Theatre: Look inside (vintage photos, video) By Laura DeMarco, The Plain Dealer Email the author | Follow on Twitter on September 14, 2016 at 11:31 AM, updated September 14, 2016 at 1:02 PM CLEVELAND, Ohio – The historic Variety Theatre is about to light up. On Saturday, Sept. 24, the new marquee on the 1927-built theater will be turned on at a street party in front of the beloved theater, closed since the 1980s. The marquee is the first step in a planned $15 million restoration of the Variety, which featured everything from vaudeville to classic movies to punk and metal bands over the years. It was metal legends Motorhead, in fact, who got the venue shut down with a court order in 1984 after a plaster- and neighbor-rattling show. http://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2016/09/restoration_begins_at_clevelan.html

Cleveland football starting strong: CWRU Football Shines in 45-17 Season-Opening Win over Chicago Case Western Reserve University junior quarterback Rob Cuda accounted for four touchdowns, and the team's defense held the University of Chicago scoreless in the second half, as the Spartans rolled to a 45-17 win over the Maroons in their season-opening game at DiSanto Field in Cleveland, Ohio on Saturday. http://athletics.case.edu/sports/fball/2016-17/releases/20160903o6em4s

  21. I encourage Clevelanders to support their only city limits college football team. Should be an exciting football season this year. DiSanto Field is a beautiful tiny stadium...and the team is fun to watch. Tomorrow, University of Chicago visits University Circle for a noon kick off time. Unfinished Business Football hoping for playoff run following last year’s turnaround Eddie Kerekes, Sports Editor • September 2, 2016 CWRU was so successful because their offense was one of the best in the country. The unit ranked 29th among all NCAA Division III teams with 38.7 points per game and 32nd with 468.4 yards per contest. It was the Spartans’ highest points per game average since their 2009 playoff run. The offense will be led by third-year quarterback Rob Cuda. He broke out in 2015, leading the team in both passing (2,631 yards) and rushing (715 yards). Cuda’s dual-threat nature will be tough for other teams to defend against. In addition to scrambling on broken plays, offensive coordinator Dereck Slesh likes to mix in designed runs for the quarterback. To start the season, CWRU will be hosting the University of Chicago Maroons at DiSanto Field. Last year the Spartans suffered a devastating 31-30 loss in Chicago and will be hoping to avenge the loss at home. All-time CWRU has a 12-14 record against the Maroons. The good news for Spartans fans is their team has won eight of the last 12 meetings between the schools. The Maroons’ offensive attack will be tough to defend against. Fourth-year quarterback Burke Moser will be returning after a record-setting 2015. He set the Maroons’ completion percentage record and tied the record for most touchdown passes in a season. He also tossed the second-most passing yards in Maroons history. http://observer.case.edu/unfinished-business/

Teaching Medical Teamwork Right From The Start August 26, 2016·4:42 AM ET Heard on Morning Edition Julie Rovner There's a new building going up on the campus of the Cleveland Clinic. A very big building. "The skylight that we're standing under will eventually cover the area of an entire football field," says Russ Saghy, who oversees construction projects for the Cleveland Clinic. The skylight is part of the new Case Western Reserve University Heath Education campus. The joint project with the Cleveland Clinic will eventually house the Case Western Reserve University's medical, dental and nursing schools, as well as the Cleveland Clinic's in-house medical school. When it opens to the first classes of students in 2019 it will provide an estimated 8.5 football fields worth of space and enough concrete to build a sidewalk that's 75 miles long. The cost: almost $500 million. http://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2016/08/26/488811721/teaching-medical-teamwork-right-from-the-start
  24. Murals will adorn Ohio City's blank walls, through Cleveland Foundation program (video, photos) By Michelle Jarboe, The Plain Dealer Email the author | Follow on Twitter on August 26, 2016 at 3:12 PM CLEVELAND, Ohio – Colorful murals will emerge from blank walls just west of downtown Cleveland this fall, as part of a collaboration between global artists, their local counterparts and nonprofit groups. For three months starting in September, international artists will live and work in the Ohio City neighborhood, near West 25th Street and Detroit Avenue. They'll leave behind a handful of murals meant to liven up buildings and soften the forbidding walls of the Cleveland Memorial Shoreway near the Lakeview Tower and Lakeview Terrace public-housing communities. http://realestate.cleveland.com/realestate-news/2016/08/murals_will_adorn_ohio_citys_b.html
  25. How Ramon Rivas II Reps Cleveland By Isaac Kozell · August 25, 2016 This is a big weekend for Cleveland comedian Ramon Rivas II. Not only is his collective Accidental Comedy putting on their fifth annual comedy festival with headliners like Beth Stelling and Kurt Braunholer, but he’s also making his television debut with one of the first Comedy Central Half Hours of the season. Rivas is DIY comedy incarnate and an interesting model for any working comedian not residing in an industry-heavy city. I caught up with Rivas poolside on the rooftop of New Orleans’ ACE Hotel as he was getting ready to leave town after his Half Hour taping in April. We talked about his family, the Half Hour, and his true love: Cleveland. http://splitsider.com/2016/08/how-ramon-rivas-ii-reps-cleveland/
